How to Depot Candles to Not Waste the Wax & Reuse the Container
Are you tired of throwing away candles that still have wax in them but the wick has burned down ? Today I am showing you how to stop wasting your expensive candles. PLUS as an added bonus I am sharing how I am reusing some of my glass jars.
There are several methods of wax removal out there. This is the version I have found to be the easiest, quickest and safest. There are also a million of ideas to redesigning the jars once they are depotted. This is an area I have yet to venture into.
If you do this project and post about it I would LOVE to see it ! Be sure to tag me :-) See my social media handles below

I respect people who reuse things or try to utilize objects to their full potential. These small actions may seem tedious and add to nothing for one, but for many, we can truly make the world healthier. Thank you for showing me just another way to help
That's why a always buy spaghetti/Alfredo sauce in glass jars. That way I get the sauce and sturdy drinking glasses/storage jars for one price and little waste. Only the label gets thrown away.
Lilly note I agree
@@kaitlyne1870 im so glad im not the only one. Lol i have so many jars and glass containers. I just cant throw them away. I figure there will always be a use for them eventually
Great to make use out of the last bits and their jars, which people would also pay $ just for the glass containers!
@@kaitlyne1870 you really don't even have to throw away the labels. You can use all kinds of paper for mache which you can make things to sale.
you can melt them together and make a franken-candle
I have done something similar. If I have candles that smell good together I'll layer them. Takes little longer but comes out nicer
That's exactly what I would do
Safya quakes
Safiya nygaard references
dasha romanovna that would be one hell of a journey
I put the jars in the hot water and pour the melted wax in ice cube trays. They are in cubed form forr the warmers.
Sandra Woods-Wimberly that’s really smart
I also do this! Use it up, stretch it out, make it do or do without as my grandma would always say.
thats smart!
Sandra Woods-Wimberly Great Idea 💡
Erin Awesome
I do the same too. I also clean the bigger jars out (the ones that have plastic rings in the lids make them seal well) and I used them like canisters. I store tea bags, instant coffee packets, ground coffee, rice, dried beans, small pasta, etc in them. 👍
LOVE that you get straight to the video, straight to the instructions. You didn’t excuse anything or apologize for something like “sorry my blah blah is blah blah” and just started. Subscribed
Ikr! Some of these CZcamsrs go on & on about nothing. 🤦
Yess
LOL bla bla bla bla...
Love that she went straight to the point as well 😺
I can’t believe I’m 27 years old and it just occurred to me that I could save my candle jars
I'm 35, and only discovered this tip! wow!
Finding new ways to use things (especially things you get as a gift) is just one of the benefits of growing up poor. Lol
Glass spaghetti/Alfredo jars are also good options for things like this and as really sturdy drinking glasses. You can even save the lid so you can cover your drink if you take it with you somewhere.
try 45. we learn something new everyday. I have thrown away so many candles. I don't know how this recommendation came up but I'm glad it did.
I'm 32. Lol dont feel bad. 🥴 I just love the BBW candles. So cute. So I got the idea.
Same!!
I use them to hold my makeup brushes. :)
Raquel Peralta me too !!
Raquel Peralta aa
Same here, you can also bling it out(=
Eva Mata Good ideas ladies ♥️
Raquel Peralta why didn’t I come across your comment before. I always throw mine away 😪😪
Nobody:
CZcams algorithm: STOP chucking away your goddamn CANDLES
I clean my Body Works candles that have the rubber seal for food storage like sugar. Clean them first and you have containers for food that keep the bugs out.
I’ve done this with lots of candles, but I never thought of putting the boiling water INSIDE the candle!!! Love that idea!!! One year I took all the empty Yankee Candle jars from work and cleaned them out and filled them with each person’s fave candy. Then on the outside I etched each person’s name and the word Treats under their name! So it would be “Jim’s Treats”, then I decorated each jar with ribbon and a tag. I save the wax too, it’s really great in the warmers! TFS this was a great video!
U could also take all of the wax and an empty candle jar and some long wicks .melt all the candles toghether and bam you have a new candle
the scent would be interesting....lol
You pair up like scented waxes for a new blend.
@@jantjaden836 any craft store has supplies to make your own candles.
I actually thought that was what she was going to do
How would you melt the “recycled” wax into the jar to make the new candle. Thank yiu
I repurpous my candle jars by making diy bathsalt to give as gifts.
Yes I’ve done that too or leftover cosmetic jars of lotions.
P Whyte I throw mine away now ugh I have so many
Somehow CZcams knew I had some old candle jars and needed ideas in what to do with them 🤷🏽♀️
Another pro tip is to use the leftover water in your humidifier instead of chucking it out! It’s scented from the candle so it will emit a wonderful scent
Hey Michelle I just put them in the freezer for maybe 10-15 min. Take out and gently push a butter knife and it comes out. Your way is cool too! Loved your video. I keep all my jars too❣️
Deborah Ramirez I️ love the freezer method!!
That's a-ok if the candle has straight sides, but if it's got wavy sides like the curvaceous Yankee one she was wiping the soot out of that method is really difficult!
Deborah Ramirez i use my coffee warmer
Is it safe putting a glass jar with boiling water into the freezer? Ppl always warn not to use cold water in a hot coffee pot.
Romaine Mckay You don't use the water. Just put the candle into the freezer the pop the wax out.
When the wax is already melted just pour in cold or room temp water and it’ll rise like that too and then you don’t have to wait as long
Use a hairdryer on the labels, they come off with heat a lot easier due to the resin/glue used by the companies.
5:19 Epic overreaction
LOL pretty much story of my life :) hope you found this video helpful and some what entertaining
Michelle Marino Watching the wax bubble up through the water was really cool. I’ve tried the freezer method before, but this way looked a bit cleaner. I’ll try it.
i just died of laughter
addjewelry Opinions are like assholes, and your opinion smells like one. At least she has the guts to do a video. Only an idiot would think she overreacted. You must really suck.
I know lol she was like no where near breaking it
I stick diamond door knobs on top as lids..looks so fancy youd never guess I made them out of candle jars
Great idea!!!
LOVE this idea! 😍
Yes! I'm gonna use this, learning in yt comments
Wow😮love this idea!
I recycled three jars into snack jars and filled with almonds, chocolate covered expresso beans and peanuts and set them on a $5 wood tray from Ross. Love it!!
During this quarantine I’ve utilized your technique, and I must say it does make the time go by so much faster. Thank you.
I know right, I saw this like three years ago but I decided to come back since I finally have some free time 🙌😅
I put my jars in the freezer and the left over wax poops right out.
Good idea!
That works great for straight side jars like the bath and body works candle, but the curvaceous ones like the Yankee that she was wiping the soot from in the beginning that's really hard to do! This is so much simpler for that kind of jar
Poops right out lol I love it 😊
LyssandRick 😂😂😂
If you carve grooves in the wax with a long knife or screwdriver before freezing the wax will snap and the pieces will fall right out.
I'm kind of surprised that the boiling water didn't crack some of the glasses, but great!
The glass is tempered to be able to withstand heat, otherwise the heat from the candle would crack it.
This made me want to go buy a bunch of candles and idk why
At least we are aware and can get ones with pretty glass containers so we can reuse them now :)
I melt the last little bit and put a birthday candle inside making a make shift candle stick
b careful boiling water can break glass as long as its just hot enough let it sit awhile b4 u pour really dangrous
I was thinking the same thing. Pyrex is the only glass that can stand boiling water. However it is not such a loss if the glass breaks.
But these are candles. Shouldn't the glass be heat resistant without the glass exploding?
Ramune Glass Heat resistant, sure, but not THAT much. Boiling water is a lot hotter than wax and a small candle fire. You can put liquid wax all over your skin and it would be warm. Boiling water burns the tissue. There is a large difference here.
Ninjapants237 I get the point in any case use protection and do it outside when putting the boiling water. The water wont be rising in temperature so it really shouldn't shatter ... plus the video she did like 3 or 4 and they didn't...
Mone broke glass everywhere,
WOW first time I'm seeing someone do this. I have a ton of "burnt out" BBW 3-wick candles sitting in the closet. Will do this as my weekend project
Ty you saved me from throwing away those pretty jars we buy at Ross, Marshall’s etc etc because we looove our candles 3-12 bucks 😉
I've been re-purposing my candles like this for years. But, to risk breaking the glass from heat shock, I put the whole jar in a tall pot, warm it up slowly on low heat, like 3-4, it melts, then pour over into an empty jar with same or similar scents. Let cool, buy new stiff wicks at Michael's, and reburn.
Do you put water in the tall pot or just the candle jar? I've broken glass before so want to avoid this.
Instead of boiling the wax out of the jars, you can pop the jars in the freezer for a little bit and voila... so much easier and less time consuming.
Bethany Platt at least 15-20 mins...
Ty for that tip!!! Wld never have thought of doing either idea!
Bethany Platt 👍
Also, place them in a ziplock bag. If they shatter in the freezer, you can just throw the whole thing away with no cleanup! :)
@@joycampbell6157 turn upside down and it works easier
What a great idea! I love to re-purpose things for organizing and storage. Thanks for sharing. Great video
I’ve thrown away so many darn candles over the years🤦🏽♀️so excited to try this! Thank you, love your personality and videos!!
Thank you Christin I’m glad this was helpful
I've been reusing my candles for ages and have NEVER seen the wax removed like this before!!! BRILLIANT!
A cute idea is to use stencils with glass etching medium. I’ve done it before on other glass items. It’s easy and turns very pretty.
I do this too BUT I never thought of the trick with the boiling water in the jar. I like it. And the only way to make this any simpler is if you had somebody else do it for you.
THE PINK FLAMINGO STRIKES AGAIN!! Actually the way to make this simpler is to pop the jars in the freezer for 15 minutes and the wax pops right out and you can throw the jars in the dishwasher. Its WAY less time, WAY less messy, WAY less dangerous and won’t compromise the scent like this method does.
@@autumnbray8790 I don't particularly like the idea of putting the jars in the dishwasher - you must make sure you have every little piece of wax out of the jar or you're asking for huge problems when wax starts to clog your dishwasher drain!
This is such a cute craft. I never thought about re-using my candle jars, but I definitely will now! Thanks for sharing
I'm super late to the game but now I'm buying candles with repurposing in mind set. Thanks for the tips.
Totally doing this over the weekend! I have a few "finished" candles that have been sitting around and I don't know what to do with haha Thanks for the great ideas!
Amanda M bullshit bitch. You're just going to lay on the couch and eat chips.
Kerry Thompson well some ppl aren’t lazy and actually do things don’t assume
y'all: *looks at the other 50 comments mentioning the freezer hack*
y'all: still decide to mention said hack anyways...
I am SOO glad I came across your video!! I've been searching for containers to store cotton balls and qtips and haven't found anything I liked. I've also been store my old bath and body works candles bc I didn't want to throw them away. This is perfect!!! Thank you for sharing!!
Seriously how am I just seeing how to do this?! I’ve wasted so much wax in the past! And I’ve thrown away some pretty cute candle jars!! Awesome informative video!! Thank you for posting this!!💕💕💕
I use my old bath and body works candle jars to hold my makeup brushes and to add more color I use the candle holders around the clear jars to go with the theme of the holidays. I have a pumpkin one for fall and I have a pineapple one I keep year round.
WOW! I've been removing the candle wax all wrong. I am definitely going to use this method the next time especially on those Dollar Tree candles. Thank you.
Holy crap! I always wondered how to get the wax out of the bottom of my jars! Thank you!
This is so practical and eliminates unnecessary waste. Thank you.
wow...I have wasted all that wax over the years...MIND BLOWN!
GENIUS! I have 4 BBW candles that have so much wax left, but I was feeling too lazy to scrape it out again : ) Will try this tonight. Thanks!
Michelle, you are an angel! I absolutely loved it!!! For the longest I felt so bad for throwing away those left over candles. I just felt like something else could be done with them... I just got the cutest candles and wanted to do exactly that, but did not know how... then your video popped up in my feed!!!!!! Yei!!! One more subscriber!!! Have a wonderful day!! Xox
I almost didn't watch the whole thing, because I thought the title referred to what you're doing with the wax, but you started talking about using the jars. I'm glad I watched. I have a candle I just "finished," and am planning to transform the container now!
You’ve just changed change my entire life. I’ve tried putting them in the freezer but that never seemed to work .
Hi, when my candle burns down I place the jar on a cup warmer, that way the unlit candle becomes a wax melt to continue the aroma.
Oh my goodness, I was just thinking of buying some nice jars for q-tips and such, when I watched this video and realized the seasonal candle not even 2 feet from me is in the perfect kind of jar for this! Thanks for sharing!
So helpful ❤ THANK YOU... I have mixed my leftover scented candle scraps with a little "pure gum turpentine" and use it as a timber furniture polish. The results are AMAZING & my home smells so good!!
Instead of boiling water... Pop it onto the freezer, the wax will shrink and pop right out
S. Sherwood and it doesn't take away the smell as much
Freezer method much better ALOT LESS TIME AND MESS!
S. Sherwood You copied someone
Delta Aqua they posted their comment 4 days ago the other person posted it a day ago so they copied this person
Yes, thank you!! 👍
I had so many jars that I use them to store crushed glass, beads, ribbons for DIY Projects.
Thanks for sharing! I love candles and had no clue what to do with mine once the wick ran out. So much wax still left and I don't want to waste it!
Another thing you could do is plant flowers, herbs, succulents, and many other small plants in them. You could also use old soup cans, old jars, old plastic containers and so much more. I’ve actually planted herbs in empty toilet paper rolls! They work well if your just starting a seed or a little sprout that you want to plant in the ground eventually. You can just rip or cut it right off!
Too funny. I just bought some succulents recently to go in my old candle jars !!
I’ve tried this before and it’s sooo satisfying when the wax is rising ! I use it to hold my sharpies
I also reuse mine and remove the wax by putting it in the freezer for a few minutes. I have used the jars to hold make up brushes and stuff!
I was using the freezer to pop out the wax. Also, you could put little knobs as an extra touch for the lids. Great video!
Such a fun idea! I never thought of saving the glass jars. I really liked your video style. Thanks for sharing
Somebody gave you sponges for Christmas I’m weak 💀
I mean when you’re an adult, those things are kinda useful.
😂😂
Thank you so much I am about to try this!!!! It’s definitely a life saver I always think the jars are the cutest thing ever but I always end up throwing them away because I don’t know how to remove the candle wax but now I do thanks to you !!!
Now you can keep them and turn them into fun things . I’ve been collecting my old candles and am hoping to do a follow up video to this one soon
You’re one of the main causes of my recycling life. This makes me not sad anymore about wasting candles.
Most awesome candle was recovery tip I’ve ever seen! You are brilliant. I’m doing this while I’m writing this comment and it’s working perfectly. I cannot wait. Really don’t like having to use my good pots to recover the wax and this is the perfect alternative. Thanks so much! 👍🏼❤️
The sponge is called “scrub daddy”
If you like tea or you do this often enough, you could get an electric tea kettle so that it would be easier to pour and faster to heat the water
Iv started to like candles
I started a hobby, Making candles.
and this, i can reuse the wax, and can easily obtain wax, after i burn my candles to the bottom
This is awesome! thank you!
Best old candle hack EVER Thank YOU!!!!!
I thought to myself, it looks like a lava lamp... and then you said it. LOL
Funny because I was just looking at this old run out candle I had in my closet and I didn't want to waste the rest but I didn't know how to get it out without making a mess. So glad I came across this I'm definitely doing this tomorrow. (well technically today it's 2am)
Oh too funny !! And girl 2am ?! You need some rest lolol let me know how it goes with the candle
I have done this years ago. It is great to see you doing this. I also am going to use these in my sewing room to hold other sewing items.
I could cry right now...I saved so many unfinished candles for about a year, saying I would depot them and never got around to it cause the other depot methods I saw on youtube would require too much work...so I eventually threw them away...and months later found this video...life is not FAIR!!!
Just did it and OMG! So awesome!! ❤️And no broken jars 💪🏼
Yeayah !!! isnt it fun to watch melt ?? What are you going to use the empty jars for ?
The sponge is called a Scrub Daddy.
camia fiscus I was wondering what it was called!(:
These ones are actually the scrub mommy, I have them 😊
lyssandRick - No, she is correct, that is a Scrub Daddy.. the Scub Mommy look similar but have two different sponges on each side. We have both types.
Why the hell is it called a scrub daddy
@@Mordecai-qv6sh exactly my tought
That idea of yours for getting out the remainder of the wax is awesome!! I'm doing 17 candles now. I use to put them in the freezer & pop them out. Tks sweetheart 💕
Awesome! I’m so glad you shared this, I was only reusing small candles jars (using a different method) but now I can finally do this with the bigger tall candles!!! can’t wait thanks again
Michelle, the candle pots can be repurposed into herb storage containers
Genius !!!!
Awesome idea thanks will never throw away a candle without getting waxout again
Jody Suire me either!
You know your getting old when you get excited about these type of videos
All the bath and body works wax and jars i have thrown out 😭😭😭 definitely know what to do from now on. Thank you queen.
Me: *not being that interested in the video*
Me at 1:22: "I have the same pot!!"
Holy crap i love this...thank you
OMG THIS IS BRILLIANT. I have been searching high and low for inexpensive apothecary jars that fit my bathroom aesthetic for my q-tips and cotton pads. This.. is this the most genius thing I've seen in a w(H)ile.
1:52 That’s brilliant! I never would’ve thought about putting the water in there. Can’t wait to try this!!
Love this
Love this process! Great ideas. Thanks for sharing. I actually make candles out of my old scentsy wax, but needed a way to empty the jars when done. My suggestion to get labels off easy is doTerra’s lemon essential oil. It is magic.
I've never seen anyone use that hot water trick. That's awesome. Thank you.
I am so going to do this. I have a whole box of candles like this and didn’t know what to do. I’m also gonna get a sensi knock off to use the last of the ones that have a good scent. Thanks for the video!!
This was pretty cool to see. Thanks for sharing. When it comes to reusing the left over wax in the scentsy warmers, how well do they melt away? I know the scentsy wax does not actually melt away. The fragrance just dissipates over time and we have to pour it off.
they won't melt away, you can just pour it off. its just for the scent. or you could make a whole new candle.
Oof I just used a butter knife to wedge out the wax. Didn't think to save it for the scentsy though!
I reused an old BBW 3 wick by putting these little tealight candles inside it. The previous label had this sparkly glitter design and the little candles inside when lit make a pretty glitter pattern around the room :o
so I tried this yesterday and OMG it legit worked!! I am so happy!!!
Yay !!! This makes me so happy ! Be sure to share this video with a friend :)
I'm going to start doing this to re-use. Much more fun and easy way to get the wax out than what I was doing with a spoon.
Omg I wasted so much candles with thissssss thank god I found this video
Love this idea thank you!
Norma Baker thank you for watching ! I’m glad you found it helpful :)
Thank you for this! I hate wasting the rest if the candle, but didn't know what to do.
Thanks for the 'depot' candle wax! Very helpful!
Why did I think it said “Stop washing ur favorite candy”
Jhope Is my hope omg same loll
So Jhope uh
I um kinda read it like that too-
Wow! I am so wasteful, this was amazing and so simple. Thank you!!
If you're having trouble getting the labels/label glue off, you can use canola oil (like, the type you use for cooking) to help dissolve it. Just dab some on an old toothbrush and work it over the label. Give it a little bit of time and *presto* - label comes right off.
The amount of time depends on the label/type of glue - and you're for sure going to wash the excess canola oil off after. 🙂
There are so many creative ppl in the comments!! So many good ideas, thank y’all
I know right ? It’s awesome
