Happens everywhere. The key is not to chase the appearance and to observe your prospect in a broader social context. This can be very difficult in a foreign country, due to a different cultural code, but their other relationships and interactions can be very revealing. I wouldn't trust someone who seems to self absorbed (hint: too many selfies), only seems to have superficial relationships, who mistreats the poor and the elderly, and doesn't participate in the community.

I'm lucky that I found a woman that's closer to my age and she was already divorced. I know that's a rarity in Japan, but she doesn't ask me for anything. Whenever I come to Japan, I often call her up, and she comes to meet me outside the Navy Base to spend time with her. Sometimes we go back to her place, or to her bar (she owns it), and just chill out for awhile. I sometimes bring her onto the base to go food shopping in the Commissary and she developed a taste for T-Bone Steak, spaghetti & Prego (pasta sauce), snacks or other small stuff like Softsoap Body Wash.
Even American women do this stuff. 😂😂😂😂😂 The difference here is that some American men know the game but more than enough don't do they fall for it. It's quite sad.
What's interesting is that I've found some of these on Facebook, and they're not in Japan. What's interesting is those take no time to really build rapport. As a result, the strength in yielding （温良恭键让） can be understood better in the context of Taoism. I believe the root to self-depracating/masochistic tenancies in Confucius societies lies in the incomplete understanding of the Taoist essence of yielding.
