The Bow River GRIND is a beautiful thing

- In this video I am back fly fishing the Bow River around Calgary, Alberta, while out visiting family in the summer. This video spans 3 separate trips out at 3 different spots. The first day I met up with an early supporter and now friend, Rhetzky, who hooked the only fish, a nice looking 14-16 incher, on my streamer rod - sadly to lose the fish a few seconds later. We got the drone up in the air and took some cool aerial footage of the Bow River. The next session was a quick explore and didn't pan out, despite one missed hookset in good streamer water. Finally, the GRIND paid off at the third, nicest spot I visited. The Bow River Killer fly, a brown-red hybrid steelie worm, on the bottom of a drop shot rig, is always a good choice for big brown trout. This fish gave me a hell of a fight and took me down with the current, only to be landed in a nice eddy and released pretty quickly thereafter. All in all, I consider the bow river grind to be a beautiful thing when it all pays off in the end! Thanks for watching - I know this is a longer video but hopefully it's one you enjoy with coffee or in the background while doing chores! ;)

Awesome brown trout man!
Thanks Bob!
Haven't fished the Bow for a few years now, really miss it when I watch videos like this. Amazing video and nice brown you caught. Tight lines.....keep fishing...
Thanks! I love the Bow :). Tight lines!
Beautiful fish, what a memory for you 🙌
Thanks!
one of my fav river !! glad to see you back in action!
Love the Bow!
@@RosinFlyFishing have you done any searun this year??
Great video 👍🏻 as always 💯
Thanks!
nice brown at my favourite starting point on the Bow. I've been fishing there for 50+ years. There sure are a lot more folks fishing there now, but we're still pulling these beauties out of there every day. Nice video!
Definitely lots of fish! I suspect they see a lot of hooks though. Did you fish downstream from there I presume?
@@RosinFlyFishing yes
Damn that was a nice brown!!!
Thanks!
It's exciting to see the bow again on this channel. Beautiful video, thanks for the recognition! Hopefully we can get back out there sometime and have a little more luck.
Hope so! Would love to throw the streamer some more
@@RosinFlyFishing for sure 👍 maybe a little more hidden of a spot too.
@@rhetzkyflyfishing Yeah the further south the better
That was hella generous of @troutflies to grant you permission to use his song!
That brown was a-mazing! Congrats
Haha well according to my notes I actually used it first...
Been depressed for a while and havent gone fishing much, i honestly really miss it when i watch videos.
I know once i force myself out to fish, id be in my happy place again.
Next time you head for a drive to the lake/river, just bring your fishing gear with you. Don't feel pressured to go fishing. If you just feel like going for a hike or even sit in your vehicle, that's ok.
Sorry to hear that mate. Fishing is a good mental health release for me. But sometimes just waking up is hard enough. I hope you have some supports to lean on and chat with. Maybe they will even go fishing with you and chat while you're out. Brain chemistry is a son of a b****. The crisis phone lines in Calgary can be a good place to chat and find supports, in case you ever need it: 403-266-4357
This is a great idea too, thanks for speaking up :)
Beautiful!!!
Agree!
Awesome fish dude!
He was pretty!
Oh heck yeah! I’m drifting and filming 40km of the bow next week 🙌🏻
The timing will be perfect for you. Hope you have a killer time!!
My heart started racing when you hooked up with that big brown!
Haha mine too!
The birds understood their assignments. So much nice water to cover, do you ever see people fishing double hand Scandi set ups?
Yes, yes they did! And yes I have seen a few people do double hand fly fishing. They remind me of the Squamish crowd, chill and just out for fun :)
I used to live within a 5 minute drive to multiple spots on the Bow, all in the same area this video is in (deep south)... Congrats on the great Brown !
There's an old video on my channel where I caught a nice one close to where you were, across from Fish Creek Park. 👍🏻
There is some good water and even some that isn't often targeted within the city! Very fortunate to have this beautiful river running through :)
When you’re in Vancouver area once again, would you mind trying out Gold Creek in golden ears park? I heard it has some nice bulls as well as resident rainbows. Love your content, tight lines!
It's on my fish list, thanks for the reminder! Maybe I'll plan a day trip with my family :)
Sure is a beautiful thing! 😊
Yup!!
Beaut brownie, worth the trip from BC.
For sure!
The legend is back on the Bow!
That's a stretch haha
Dude, I haven’t caught a fish on the bow in two years. You landing a 6 inch whitefish would make you a legend in my books, just saying.
It's been about 14 years since I fished the bow. I used to fish around 22x when I was a kid, like '99. Makes me kinda sad and happy seeing it. Where the hell has time gone. 😢
Idk, time is flying! Go do something nostalgic this weekend! :)
Welcome back to Cowtown! I don't want to disclose your location but you might want to know that drones are prohibited in this area.
Thanks for letting me know! Usually if it's a 'strict' no fly zone like due to air traffic, the DJI app will fully override your ability to go above 10 meters. So I presume this is more of a local regulation/prohibition?
nice brown
Thanks!
Man multiple hooks on a line just feels wrong. Do they even make you go barbless there?
Haha if you start in Alberta, coming here feels so limiting ;). Some waters are barbless yes!
@@RosinFlyFishing ah so not the rivers like here in bc. I will take the limiting sportsmanship of a single barbless fly anyday. There are reasons the bow river is in the state it is now and these kind of regulations sure don't help.
Gorgeous fish dude, wow.
Just a question! How do you like the 8 fans waders? I have a pair of simms but they do tend to get some holes sometimes!
Thanks! The 8fans waders basically are just a semi barrier from wet and cold. They have a bunch of holes and I've torn a hole in the bootfoot neoprene. I've patched it all up with aquaseal but it's all leaky. Which is fine with me tbh! I'm pretty cheap and pretty tough on gear, I'm quite sure I'd put holes in any pair of waders. Also these came in XXL which was very important for me!! 😊
@@RosinFlyFishing so awesome!! thanks for your reply my man (: really appreciate it
Should have let me know you were here and do coffee
This was last summer actually!! But Calgary trips are always jam packed it's tough to even hit the water
Looks like Heritage point golf course
spot burner! getem! (jk obviously)
Great eh I live here 😮
Sorry if I burned your nearest hole !
@@RosinFlyFishing I would catch tons or used to
would you recommend the bow river for a beginner?
Interesting question. It might be a bit frustrating for a beginner. I'd recommend starting with cutthroat yrout on small mountain streams in kananaskis or crowsnest pass area! Lots of fun and beginner friendly. But if you're like me, the Bow is a fun, enormous puzzle to solve! I'd definitely watch videos from various other channels to learn about some of the methods and water features before showing up to the river :)
Hey im new to this game, how do i set up a double nymph rig like yours
I have a video on it! Lmk if you don't find it :)
Good job bro!!
Thanks!
can't you eat the fish?
NO!! Never any fish from the Bow!!
Beautiful river and scenery.
But video has insane amount of advertising to the point it becomes annoying.
Tide lines
Ah, sorry about that. CZcams sticks a good amount of ad slots into videos these days but often doesn't 'use' them all, but if the timing is right for companies paying, they will use every single one! Sorry mate! A little gas money for me helps though! :)
Good fight, beautiful fish, and amazing footage. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Joe!
