*I actually keep my phone at the smallest possible storage when I buy it so that I have to declutter my photos more often!*

I like the boundary of one photo in a night or at an event!

Same! If I’m at a gig or something then it’s one photo and one video. Otherwise I’m not in the moment

Oh how I miss the film cameras...knowing you have only a certain amount of pics...taking the roll to the shop...waiting a week for them to be printed...and going through them...great memories...

Resist the temptation to take photos or multiples of the same. Back in the day we didn't do that b/c we had to pay for every one of them to be developed PLUS we had to buy the film too..both were expensive. We think taking digital photos are free, but they are not...they figuratively weigh us down, and there is a cost to that..so think before you snap and if you do multiples of the same immediately delete those that are redundant. It's easier to not shoot than it is to clean up the mess.

Thanks for this. Old school photographer here that has been spoiled by all the unlimited photos I can take on the smartphone. Retraining my brain to construct 5 or less photos a day.

On Huawei Phones, there is actually a function that comes within the cleanup function that shows you photos that are similar and you can choose one or none to keep there, which is always very helpful to clear the clutter on your phone.

I started at the beginning and then when I need to stop I make a note of where I left off, so that when I’m able to pickup again I know where to start. I also have been careful to immediately delete any extras when I take several pictures of the same thing.

I am intentional with when I choose to take photos. During events I tend not to, except before or after while we're waiting perhaps. I want to really experience that moment. I recently visited a friend who lives far away and we took a few photos together and a couple of interesting things we encountered, but the majority of the weekend our phones were away and we were enjoying each others company.
Other times, like when I'm at the beach or on a hike I enjoy making vignettes or taking photos of interesting wildlife I see. It adds to the experience. So I might take hundreds. I don't look at them then because I want to enjoy the moment. Some evening that week I also enjoy the experience of looking back through and picking the best few to save.
Both are intentional approaches, but they're different depending on what will bring me joy in the moment I am experiencing. I find I only need two or three photos of a weekend with friends to remember the good times between the photos, but if it's all about photos there aren't as many good times to remember.

I’ve recently got a 35mm camera for this very reason, to be more deliberate and make me intentional. I’m not sure where to get them developed yet though. 1 picture a night sounds perfect with the smartphone

One trick is to go to your camera roll and take a screenshot of multiple pictures at once (whichever ones fill the screen as you scroll) then delete the actual pictures. Basically it looks like a collage feature. Then you can expand with your fingers to get a closeup look at a specific shot.

I definitely use "dead times" for this...waiting in line, on a bus, plane etc but this has been minimal in the past year so I am well behind now, a timely reminder - thanks!

I have 8,000 photos on my phone and it’s pretty much full. I need to declutter ASAP. But I use it like my only camera so it has important family pics too. But I definitely have ones that can go...

Good ideas, but I'm not sure the question was answered! What to do if you already have tons of picts on the phone? I suppose this approach would solve the issue eventually.

How funny that I deleted 800 photos 2 days ago ... because my samsung 20 was at 99% storage ... documents, emails and photos took up the bulk ... but interesting enough I don't do the burst shots like my daughters phone ...(apple) I'm very present and just love photography ...
I just have to transfer to the computer to store to and external hard drive ... which we then love going thru and viewing like a family photo night like we used to with the negatives and slide projector... yes I'm 50 ...
    My girls love it ...

I bought a new smartphone few weeks ago after my 4 years old one died slowly. When my cousin visited me, he looked and liked It’s camera. He shot 45 selfies and then I laughed and said “Wow man you love selfies” He laughed either. Then I sent him all photos he shot as message then deleted all. I always get rid off the clutter this way, But when I want to have a group of photos but not in my gallery then I upload it on a cloud service or as seperate files on my system not holding them in my camera roll.

Here's what I do...I "heart" those pics I want to save on my iPhone. I then use a 3rd part app called Deleter (has a red X on the symbol). The app removes all pics which are not favorites/hearted. Once done, your recents & favorites will have the same # of pics. I do this every 3 months. Then I can place in digital albums or sort another way if I choose.

Hello, I'm someone who captures photos and videos of the same place (landscape) I'd visit when I travel or go somewhere beautiful. I hate my method as I'm starting to have duplicates - a video and a photo showing the same thing. What do you do when you travel? Do you guys stick to pictures only? Thank you.

Federica! This would be a great question for a future podcast episode. Would you be willing to send a voice memo to podcast@theminimalists.com so we can answer it on the show? In the voice memo, state your name and city followed by your question (use a fake name if you wish to be anonymous).

Hello, I will definitely do that. Thank you for your reply! Please, keep up the great work with the books, podcasts and videos. Started my minimalism journey when I was eighteen. Today, I'm twenty-two, and you helped me begin and solidify it, making it my lifestyle.
