  • Some crossovers place a mild emphasis on ruggedness, some say they’re “sporty” or high tech, but most don’t make sacrifices in the process. Mazda, on the other hand, made noteworthy compromises to make the most luxurious subcompact crossover with a strong value proposition. Does that make it better than competitors like the Hyundai Kona, Toyota Corolla Cross, Honda HR-V, Subaru Crosstrek and countless others? Let’s find out!

    No sure if Americans are just really spoiled by their big cars but we use cx30 as a family car for 3 of us and it has enough space for everyone. Im 6’4 and even with my seat setup for me I can easily fit behind it.

    Really good review. I have a 2023 carbon edition and I LOVE this car (flaws and all). It perfectly fits my lifestyle. The exterior is extremely attractive. I can see how the cladding would look out of place with certain colors. But in polymetal gray, I don't mind it at all. It blends in well. I always look back at the car when I walk away. It's such a good looking car. I've never done this with any other vehicles that I've owned.
    The interior puts a smile on my face every time I drive. Everything is high quality. Good amount of padding where your knees and arms will rest. High quality leather seats and steering wheel. Physical buttons for all the commonly used features. And the rotary knob to control infotainment system takes like 5 seconds to get used to. I've never used it in any other car, and now I don't want to go back to touchscreens ever again. The dial and the knobs are all laid out exactly where your hand would rest anyways. And they are of such high quality. It offers great tactile feedback and has real heft to it. Doesn't feel like cheap plastic at all.
    And my god does it drive great. I don't even have the turbo, yet I still smile whenever I put some ooomph into the accelerator. Excellent passing and handling power. Steering is on the heavier side with respect to its' competitors. But I really like that.
    Now to the cons. Agree with you about the back seat. If you have the need to carry rear seat passengers on a regular basis, I'd stay away from CX30. They won't be comfortable at all. But 90% of the time, I am in this car by myself. And it truly does shine there. And fuel economy is straight up terrible for what is supposed to be a commuter car. I wouldn't mind the mid 20 mpg that I am getting if the tank held more fuel. But I am having to fill up every 6-7 days based on my current driving habits. Mazda is seriously falling behind when it comes to hybridization and overall fuel consumption. Also, the app doesn't work half the time. It's terrible. Thankfully I'm not being forced to pay for it.......yet.
    All in all, this was my first Mazda and I think they've gained a customer for life. I can see now why people rave about this brand and their driving dynamics. So much so that I've already planned out the next two cars that I will buy that will be my forever cars. A CX50, hopefully with turbo hybrid engine, which is rumored to be coming soon. And a Miata as the fun weekend car.

      @@donzole3180 - There is no touchscreen (that I am aware of) in the non-turbo trims for the 2024 CX-30. However, I believe that the turbo models (with the 10.25" screen) has touchscreen for Apple Car Play and Android Auto (which are also wireless).
      As for adding addresses: I use the Mazda Navigation and it allows to add addresses (but not on the touch screen). I assume that the Turbo models (with the touchscreen) would allow adding addresses via touch screen while using Android Auto and Apple Car Play.
      Personally, I prefer using the knob OR simply using the voice commands (i.e., "Navigate to...."). It works flawlessly for me whether I use the Mazda Maps or Google Maps.

    Just bought this for my mother a week ago.
    It was mostly a surprise present.
    She was looking for an upgrade but didn't know if she could afford it nevertheless an upgrade was needed as she previously drove a very old and run down Corolla.
    We went to look for cars. Its her, my father and my younger brother with her so she didnt need a huge and gas guzzling SUV.
    We narrowed it down to a Honda HR-V, Corolla Cross and a Mazda CX-30.
    When we went to look and test drive she instantly fell in love with CX-30.
    Her words were, "It feels surprisingly spacious and comfortable with just the right amount of Luxury i was looking for. The looks are so beautiful."
    I bought her a Carbon Edition at an amazing price as well. I was genuinely shocked at how low i got it. I honestly got it for a steal!
    Personally i do not like SUVs but I can say this small SUV is pretty great!

    As a new owner, I found this review to be dead on. You liked what I liked, and pointed out the shortcomings I identified during the evaluation process. Happy to be in a car with a real engine that has a real transmission. My last car was a 3 hatchback that was running like a top at 150k. I hope i'll have a similar experience.

  • @tori8098

    I have a 2022 premium plus turbo - I love the thing, I would have rather had the styling of the Mazda 3 Hatchback, but in Pittsburgh having a car that low to the ground is asking for trouble with all the potholes we get around here, and they were more expensive for the same trim and engine.
    Overall I love the car, it handles better than my old focus hatchback despite being 4 inches taller, and the sound system is amazing. It's very quick with the turbo, getting me from 0-60 in under 6 seconds - but the fuel economy is very very bad. I get 22 with mixed city and highway driving, sometimes lower. A sams club / Costco membership is pretty much a must have with all the gas you'll be buying. And youll be buying it often too - I only get around 200 miles a tank, so I'm filling up every week.
    If you want something that feels luxurious, handles well, and is zippy, but also high enough off the ground to deal with horribly maintained roads - It might be the car for you, If you can stomach the gas prices.

    A friend of mine was involved in early design work for the CX-30 program. Back in 2014 Mazda favored what was essentially a CX-3 with less cladding and minor interior space bump. The design featured the floating roof, but hideous VW-like flattened wheel arches accentuated by a thin plastic lip. In 2016 work was moved to Japan where as everyone can probably predict, Hiroshima designers enjoyed a lot of preferential treatment versus California ones.
    I suppose this car could've looked like a Chinese EV or this, and I'd much rather this look.

    I have a 2024 CX-30 base trim. I think it's great what mazda offers on the lowest trim level -- AWD, blind spot monitoring, collision prevention, etc. It was also important to me to find a car with an appropriately sized engine -- not a 1-point-something liter with a turbo charger slapped on.

    Went to a Mazda dealership yesterday to check out a brand new CX-30. Right off the bat the car would not unlock on the driver's side after numerous "clicks". The embarrassed salesman had to go to the rider's side to reach across to open the driver''s door. We instantly ruled this car out because what even if the driver's side wouldn't have opened and with no door key option what would you do???? Reliability at mileage "0" is a major issue. I am afraid to buy any Mazda product.

    I wish at least the top turbo trims were Made In Japan instead of Mexico. I also would've liked a black headliner instead. The greige headliner is just so cheap and tacky looking, not luxury like Mazda is trying to go for. It doesn't match with anything in the interior. Finally, idk why it's taking Mazda so long to make a hybrid CX-30 seeing as it's their second best selling model. How cool would a Spirit Racing CX-30 be? Mazda's own Kona N

    • @drewlehman2456
      @drewlehman2456 Před 3 měsíci

      A spirit racing CX-30 would just be the spirit racing Mazda3 with more disadvantages going for it (if it's truly made to be a sports car). They have the same interior space and engine, but it weighs more, has a longer wheelbase, and has higher center of gravity / ground clearance which wouldn't be ideal. given the same interior passenger space I can't see why they would bother making a performance version of the CX-30 since ground clearance and slightly larger trunk benefits of the cx-30 aren't something most people buying a sports car want.

      @@drewlehman2456 Because there are people like me who live in areas with harsh winters and shitty roads, so I need more ground clearance. Hyundai made the Kona N which reviewers and enthusiasts loved, almost no compromise to the driving dynamics despite being a crossover

    The CX-30 might be a good value but it comes at the cost of tons of reliability issues and safety issue. I owned mine for 7 months and had to sell it off because of tons of battery issues, the car systems locking on me and the brakes acting funny every now and then. For a brand like Mazda which is seen to be reliable, I had a scary experience that put my life at risk and always in the fear that would the car even start up or not. Think twice before buying the CX-30.
    My CX-30 spent more time at the service center than with me.

      @Realistick  Před 3 měsíci +5

      Ouch, that's quite unfortunate, I'm sorry you've had a bad experience with mazda. Lemons really can hit any brand, the CX-30 has been a pretty solid car based off of owner reviews and common issues, more so than a lot of cars I research for these reviews. Still, I'd also have a hard time buying another car from a brand if I had a bunch of problems with the first.

      @@Realistick I don’t blame Mazda as a brand for it, they are a brand that are known for their reliability, I am just very disappointed with the lack of professionalism shown by Mazda technicians about the awareness to the situation. It’s a problem that many people have faced with the CX-30 since 2021 especially the battery issue, but no real initiative or explanation has been given by Mazda or the technical people looking into these problems.

    Americans are very strange - buy a huge pickup truck to drive even without passengers and cargo. Just moving massive mass and volume for your ass)
    I have a 10-year-old Mazda 3. I've used it to transport my family with a small child, strollers, sleds, and a scooter. I've moved houses four times with it, carrying many personal items and even furniture in the Mazda 3. It was a front-wheel-drive model from 2005, with a manual transmission. I drove it on forest roads and in snowy winters - everything was fine. The only issue was the ground clearance. The main factors are driving skills and the smart use of space, not the monster truck that marketers want to push on you.
