  • Replacing the alternator on a Peugeot 407 fitted with the 1.6 16v HDi DV6 engine. This process should be the same or very similar for most PSA cars (and Ford group cars) fitted with this engine. That includes the 206, 207, 307, 308, 3008, 5008, Partner, Citroën C3, C4, C5, Berlingo. I also think the Ford Focus, Mazda 3, Volvo V40, to name a few, are similar.
It is a relatively straightforward job, although it is much easier if you have a lift, but should be doable on axle stands. A replacement alternator from a local scrapyard cost £25.
I was doing the timing belt and also had to remove the turbo to replace the oil feed pipe on this car, but it was all relatively easy to work on.
This car belongs to a friend of a friend; it had been off the road for over 6 months due to the failed alternator. It was a car that was used quite a lot and was sorely missed as the owner had a 2007 Toyota Avensis which was nearly done, with much more serious and expensive issues compared to this 407, and it was also significantly thirstier on diesel, so he was keen to get his economical 407 back on the road.
