Alinghi back in the America's Cup

- It's been eleven years since Ernesto Bertarelli's Swiss team exited the America's Cup after losing the Deed of Gift match in Valencia. But now the two time Cup winners are back for the 37th America's Cup. And this time they come with the current Formula One world champions, Red Bull Racing on board. Having watched the development of high performance, foil borne machines that has hooked him for years in his private racing, Bertarelli is back on the Cup trail and clearly means business.
Add to that the prospect of Red Bull versus Mercedes on the water and possibly even another F1 team.......can't wait! - Sport
McLaren F1 therefore needs to return to it’s roots and partner with Team New Zealand.
The kiwis only need to stick with Toyota..
@@stevenfrench4244 hahahaha
A good partnership that will improve sailing and logistics. Red Bull should fit in quite well with the Swiss. Heads up NYYC it just got harder.
super! je suis content que mes deux passions s'unissent enfin!
Loved the vlog as always, really solid comments and well based. I think that the most interesting (and evolving development) is that none of these players are in it for 'a one shot', they have clearly understood that AC can become the F1 of sailing, and anyone with a franchise can benefit from that. All the 'grey hairs' who wish to see 12m raced on 'gentlemen's terms' have been rather ignored by the acceptance of the current protocol and those who are willing to sign up to it. The next 12 years are going to see a remarkable transformation of the AC, and if competitors are in agreement, then the 'Deed' will hardly need referring to. What an exciting time to be in sailsport! Love the vlog.
I never understood why they DID NOT take part! They now have so much experience with foiling through they‘re own series, they will be „Up and Ready“, especially with this new partner. Go Switzerland🇨🇭👍💪!
Alinghi, the name that shall not be spoken in N.Z.
Wow!!
They will be very impressive on the water!
Red Bulls chief aerodynamicist Adrian Newey is the best of the best. It will be interesting to see if he works on the boat. My guess is he will.
I am almost sure he will, in his book he talks about leaving F1 and joining Americas cup (which he never did but of course never the less likely still is interested in for its comparatively more open regulations )
A lot of people here thinking that the RB F1 team would be designing the boat. They're not. They're engineers solving engineering problems given to them by the boat designers.
Yea! Switzerland and Austria join forces! Hopp auf, lets go!
Pack mas!
Bringing back the glamour in a big way!
Oh my GOD my two fav sport united .... bring ot ON
If nothing else the boat is going to look great in Red Bull livery!
Interesting news. Good luck for the new Alinghi - Red Bull Team.
Excellent
LOVE THIS NEWS !!!!!!! REDBULL & ALINGHI ROCK !!!!!!!!
Grande Ernesto👍👍
Breaking News:
Michael Masi announced as race director…😳🤣
Exciting news advancing the sport. Last season felt like it was going the other direction.
I don't want to have to correct you but Max beat Lewis, Mercedes beat Redbull.
Don’t believe I said any different
@@PlanetSailOnline I believe Horner mentioned it
@@PlanetSailOnline First off I love your content and I'm probably being a bit pedantic but you said fresh off their victory over Mercedes yet Mercedes won the constructors championship. My apologies if I came across as an ass.
Excellent news
Great!
💪🏼
Te Aihe looks good red bull colours
6 people attended the announcement…5 people applauded 🤣🤣
The more teams the better last year wasn't that amazing with only 4 teams
the cost cap in F1 has definitely pushed Red Bull to use money and people for the yacht racing team. I'm glad they found a way to hold on to as much engineering and racing know-how as they could by moving them to America's Cup.
More the merrier. Next AC is shaping up as a compelling event of consequence.
I'm glad ETNZ defeated both mentioned F1 teams so far. I hope they'll stick to that tradition 🙂
Alinghi-NZ
Wasn't there something?
Burling and Tuke in the new team????
I hope Luna Rossa will be part, Ferrari is a great companion
Just because Red Bull has the expertise and vast experience on land, the sea is a whole different matter and environment, masters on land cannot ever defeat masters of the sea and just when other teams think they've got the America's cup in reach, team NZ come up with something unexpected that not even formula 1 science engineering can match the uniqueness of kiwi pioneering and gift of artistic talent and nous.
This is more or lesst the zest of many comments in the late 1990s when the Swiss started appearing in Newport.
What can these landlocked guys coming down from their mountains do, they have no clue on how to build or sail a boat.
The rest is history.
@@Braun30 lol😆🤣LOADED with New Zealanders in design and at the helm! America's cup 2003, the Swiss's first introduction🤣🤣🤣
@@alexanderjackson6596 actually the first Swiss experience was earlier and the design was helped by New Zealanders but how come a full NZ team mucked up the project so well to start sinking in Hauraki while sailing the Swiss?
Maybe the Swiss side of the project made the winning difference.
@@Braun30 the kiwis still won it for them😁
@Braun30 The better question is how come the Swiss needed nearly the entire former Team NZ members to win the cup?
Could they have won the cup without Russell and his crew?
Boy the new york yacht club really botched their own opportunities at that massive red bull partnership
How many kiwi's are going to be in the team.
There will be by far more Swiss in the Alinghi team than Americans in any US team.
America's Cup 🏆 needs side skirts and bargeboards 🎯🎯🎯
Ineos...it not happy for...
Alinghi is the best
Good for them .. maybe they need a deckhand.?
Sorry, but „no“ alinghi sails with 100% Swiss sailors on board.
I am quite skeptical, because yep both f1 engineers and boat designers have to work with fluid dynamics but the applications and the expertise are opposite, so I don't think it will be useful, except for marketing purposes
But you don't have any expertise in the field, so what do you know, right?
@@AnttiBrax more or less, I work I aerospace, and yep a wind turbine designer have a very great experience in laminar flow control, but probably isn't the first choice if the program is about a small wing and canard for an unstable aircraft, the thing is yep technology transfers between sectors are cool, but working from 0 experience in a new sector against the best of the best isn't a great choice, Airbus and Mercedes made not so great 1th ships, they was too conservatives and worked intensive on not so decisive features, both team have to "copy" the kiwis and the Italians, olso the overall performance of the sailors were affected by the new designs and by the less training time with the definitive design, olso the wing design isn't all, the races show to us the important of the balance of ship performances, the importance of quick acceleration in total displacement
What I mean is quite simple, the f1 team and boat designer should only talk and exchange idea, but not collaborate too close if both team members want to remain expert in their own field
Team New Zealand need to partner with McLaren!
Better with Minardi
I can build it
I would love to see Ineos-Mercedes, Alinghi-Red Bull, Luna Rossa-Ferrari, and of course the return of New Zealand-Mclaren
The car guys have no clue!
F1 Is literally the premier motorsport division in terms of focus on aerodynamics. There are engineers who are paid 250000 a year by f1 teams for their expertise of areodynamics and wing dynamics. They have all the clues a sailing team could want.
@@jacksonbarry5407 after 43 years of flying, calculating many new aircraft designs I see that different than you as a car nut!
@@tinolino58 I'll admit I'm a car nut yes... but I also sail more than I drive. 43 years is a long time and I can't argue with that experience. However, my favourite dad joke/one liner to tell is "physics is constant". I'm sure the F1 engineers would be some of the best people to go to I terms of expertise on how to improve foil, sail and hull design. And if some engineers who got hired in F1 because of their degrees in aerospace and aerodynamics can't figure out boats, we would hear a lot of news about mass sackings across the F1 teams.
@@jacksonbarry5407 Sure the design is in most cases the deciding factor for AC success. The big difference though for me when comparing the main design factors of F1 and the AC is the optimal weather conditions that the boat is designed for. Where RBR will be good is developing the boat as the series goes on. That has been a huge factor in the last few Cups.
Until now there is ETNZ defender, Ineos challenger of record, Prada and Alinghi, 3 challengers are too few: they have to play AC in Europe so other YCs would be easier to register .. moreover, I hope that this challenge Alinghi / Red Bull vs Ineos / Mercedes doesn't make racing even more like boring F1… anyway PRADA will always go to the final!
I don't know where you have been, but f1 definitely isn't boring...
@@moimoi-rn4go it's very boring but I don't care because I don't like it .. I don't want sailing to become just a speed race without the seafaring skills of tacticians, skippers and helmsmen ..
"Getting around the spending cap", no way any team in F1 would engage in such thing, that´s more likely to be getting around the wind tunnel, CFD and spending caps.
That's still driving sustainability in both sports as the energy and water used by both to do the same type of development is now siloed within the same work flow.
Red Bull hasn't beaten Mercedes. Mercedes won the Constructor's title - just saying.
Yeah, Merc had a bit less shitty second seat driver. It's really something to celebrate.
Expect more crashes, more cheating and more drama
