I can only buy Bird's custard powder where I am. I just following the instruction on the tin and it's fine. If I want it a bit thicker I add a little less milk. It's all done in one saucepan so that's the only pan to wash.
I make trifle custard with custard powder but add at least a heap tablespoon more. I don't worry about a skin forming as when only slightly warm I whizz it in the blender with extra vanilla essence and a couple of tablespoons of double cream. While it's still slightly warm I pour it onto the chilled jelly and cover in cling film. Easy then to add cream on top. I'm doing one for church this weekend. Ppl always comment favourably on the custard. Chocolate orange trifle is favoured.
