  • The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin
Season One Episode Five - 6 Oct 1976
A nervous Reggie is to address the British Fruit Association and mixes Dutch courage with sedative pills, with the result that the speech is a disaster and he has to be dragged off the stage. He is now at breaking point and tells C.J. that blood will flow. C.J. takes this literally when Reggie empties a lorry load of loganberry juice into the river where C.J. is fishing. Next Reggie leaves his clothes by the edge of the sea to fake his suicide and considers which false identity to assume.

I missed the series first time round. I was aware of the character from seeing documentaries about Leonard Rossiter over the years but I've only recently begun watching the first series. A real gem - great writing, incredible performance by Rossiter, complimented with an excellent cast. Funny, but also genuinely poignant. Looking forward to seeing how this unfolds.

I've loved this show since I discovered it on PBS in Maine as a kid. Not typical fare for a 12 year old, but apparently I wasn't typical. My preferred viewing while wrapping xmas packages.

Long live Leonard Rossiter, for without Reginald Perrin none of us would have ever known which way to turn at the many gateways of life 😀
It's a shame about the laugh track though, I wish the BBC would remaster them without it.

Jim X He does. I think it's in The 2nd Series. In Series 1 Episode 5 he TOLERATES Reggie. But in the later episode(s) he seems to enjoy Reggie stroking him a lot more!

csevo100 He seemed Ok with the situation, just wagging the tail a little, but ears weren't back. Would be a bit nervous in front of an audience with the noise. Some cats are social butterflies. Looks exactly like my kitty Mr. Stripey, who's affectionate, loves visitors and parties, but if he's upset, watch out for those claws and teeth!

I've started reading the books recently, and it's funny seeing which bits are the same and which were altered. Jimmy and Linda had a slightly dodgy relationship which was fortunately dropped. Elizabeth wasn't even aware that Reggie is going to deliver a speech, and after dragging him out of the room, Dr. Hump tells one of the other speakers to "F* off."

Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
