*Actually Reusable* 2-stage Rocket! (Spaceflight Simulator)

  • I recently got the expansion bundle and now I’m having fun with it.
You might recall my previous “recoverable” 2-stage rocket video here • Recoverable 2-stage Cr...
I have made few upgrades to that and I’ll make an update + building & flying tutorial for it soon.
This one, though, is actually reusable! The wider parts in the expansion pack allows for a decently powerful engine and docking ports to fit underneath a stage. So, this will require part expansion, unlike my previous “recoverable” rocket.
Technically, it's not completely reusable. The nose cone/heat shield combo are discarded with each flight. This is because I haven't found an elegant way to have both heat shield and nose cone permanently integrated to the rocket yet, so I opted for jettisoning the nose cone to burn up and left the heat shield + landing legs structure on the ground. It also would be annoying to flip the whole part around and put atop the 2nd stage again, and ablative heat shield in real life is single-use anyway.

Update: You might notice how tiny the crawler transporter is. It was originally designed to only move the 1st stage underneath the launch structure. It turns out, moving the launch structure over the 1st stage is easier. 💀
Since this video, I made it a bit thicker. So it looks more appropriately sized for a whole rocket, and the drop isn’t as high now (less than a meter.)
Edit: I also simplified the servicing vehicle system, so now you only need 3 blueprints on the first time, and 1 blueprint for each flight after for it to work.
I also made STaRS (Space Tug and Refueling Spacecraft), a small reusable spacecraft that can be launched using this rocket, to intercept and refuel another 2nd stage left in orbit with too little fuel for the return, and be brought back down with it, to be retrieved, refueled, and stored on the launch tower! (I also redesigned the launch tower a bit so there’s a place to mount it.)
As for blueprints, there is a lot of them needed for this whole system. So it will be a while before I finish compiling them all and find ways to distribute them. I also wanna make a proper flying tutorial of this rocket first, so y’all know what to do with the blueprints!
And for fun, a counter of how many times this exact rocket and its siblings flown in this world save file.
Feel free to suggest what I should launch with this LV!

DAMN DUDE THIS IS AWESOME!! you could add parachutes for redundancy in case something goes wrong, and then the stage would have to be "inspected" (you can make the parachutes themselves detachable and re attach them). after my exams are over i might take a shot at this and make your design better because it's super cool to have a perfectly reuseable rocket for light loads :p

@@Your_Average_Rabbit There were originally parachutes on this rockets, but I have yet to find a good way to mount it in a place that would be protected by the heat shield, easy to remove, and re-install. At least with this heavier 2nd stage, it tends to get slowed down a lot less and keep its lateral velocity on its way down more which makes it easier to not undershoot the landing site.

I'll eventually release blueprints, but I'm the kind of person who share something and immediately started noticing flaws/what can be improved right after. I wanna test the system out on my own a bit to see what I can improve (which so far there's already been several improvements made.)
I also wanna make a flying/processing tutorial to go along with the blueprints, so you know what to do with them. There's also lots of blueprints you need for this to work as well, so that makes it a bit more complex.
And to be honest, I made this more as a proof of concept anyway, and mostly for the fun of getting expansion pack. I got other things in my life to care about as well, so I hope you understand why it will take a while.

    • @twogirlsoneblahaj
      @twogirlsoneblahaj  Před 26 dny

@@MinerBat I tried to make it reusable, but I also can’t find other good spot to mount the heat shield aside from the top. So it would need to get out of the way after its usefulness has ended.
I guess I can get rid of the nose cone, but it would be less aerodynamic. It probably doesn’t matter much in the game, but I’d like it to look more like a rocket. Most of the weight is on the engines and fuel tanks down the bottom anyway, so I can’t really re-enter head-first. The heat shield being put on the bottom means I can just leave it behind as I lift up the ship to put on launch tower again.
The nose cone also added some mass to the heat shield part for the flipping and docking maneuver, so it and the heat shield resists movement more which makes it move around less (I had problems with heat shield just flying off so easily without the mass of the nose cone.)
And the only thing that can connects to bottom of the heat shield is separators, which can’t be re-attached. And IRL you’d wanna replace an ablative heat shield every time as well. So a heat shield/nose cone combo unit that needs to be installed for every flight makes the most sense with all of these considerations.
Even Dragon have parts that need to be newly made, like the trunk and heat shield. I’d say it’s not too unrealistic and isn’t less “reusable” than IRL spacecrafts. I do understand where you’re coming from, though. And ideally, I’d like for the whole rocket to be reusable as well. But I think this is probably the best I can do with the game’s limitations.

@@boom_headshot2697 Dragon’s trunk/heat shield, Falcon 9 2nd stage, and Shuttle’s ET aren’t reusable either, yet we still think of most of those systems as “reusable.” All of these are technically “partially reusable.”
I haven’t seen anyone made an *actually reusable* rocket in SFS yet. Most of the time when people say reusable, they seem to meant that it can just survive entry and landing. Many designs even requiring heat damage to be turned off via cheats, and many seem to land so far off launch site. I previously made a “Recoverable” 2-stage crewed rocket without DLC earlier, with both stages actually able to make it to launch site, but it wasn’t able to be assembled back together.
That’s why I called this one *actually* reusable (Note how it’s not called *completely* reusable.) It went from just being “recoverable” from my previous rocket, to being able to be assembled back together and actually flown again for 20+ times and counting (maybe at some point it might break the game itself, I already spotted how some parts seem to shift out of alignment.) It’s the first rocket I made to achieve this, and maybe the first in SFS too (I haven’t seen others that are “reusable” to this extent yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m not the first.)
And just like IRL “reusable” systems, due to various constraints (mostly re-entering from orbital velocity or close to orbital velocity), some parts are discarded. Or in the case of ablative heat shield, you just can’t reuse those IRL (I know you can in-game, but separators are the only way you can connect to the bottom of it, and it can’t be re-attached.)
Some constraints I’m dealing with are just limitations of the game, like how fairing pieces or separators can’t be re-attached back together, or how there’s so many stages I can control at once, or how I can’t have one side covered by thermal protection tiles so I don’t have to do a flip and extract maneuver.
I guess I could make the nose cone a fairing piece (the bottom half actually are), but that just add another thing I have to remember during launch process. And the extra mass from it helped the heat shield stay still as a target for 2nd stage to dock to. I’m sure someone (maybe even me) would figure it out in the future. Without in-game constraints, it would basically just be Superheavy/Starship, to be honest.
This is mostly a proof of concept to me, and I think it’s a huge leap from my previously “recoverable” LV, and other “reusable” LVs that don’t even land back at launch site or require you to turn off heat damage via cheats. The parts that need to be replaced make sense are insignificant enough when we look at real life “reusable” systems, in my opinion. But I do agree that it’d be even better if I can reuse the nose cone. I just haven’t found an elegant way to do so yet, and I think it doesn’t take away that much from the achievement of this LV.
