- I get it. You have multiple interests and you don't want to niche. When I was starting my channel, all the CZcams gurus we're advising you to niche down. BUT, I felt like I had more to talk about than just one topic!
There's a strategy that works better than niching and it'll give your content some variety while still having a focal point.
In this video, I break down the difference between how to find your niche, how to create a target audience and how to experiment around your CZcams channel.

My channel is a variety all centered around being a dad. Running a business and making time for family. If I get burned out on my topic, I have bigger problems than youtube lol
You're doing well
You are completely right - I love the videos where you talk about what you've done with your channel, the battles you've had and how you stay motivated etc. How to build a successful channel is obvious to me, and has already been done to death on the big channels. They all seem to talk about the same thing over and over. The key to me watching every one of your videos is the motivation I get for my own channel, seeing your struggles and how you've dealt with them, but also how you're starting to see some success is key. I'd say at this point, I'm starting to watch your videos for 'you', but I can't guarantee I won't click off your video if it isn't relevant to me. But that also doesn't mean I won't instinctively click on your next one. Hope this helps in some way?
It definitely helps. If you ask me, staying relevant is the most important point to keeping retention and getting clicks. Many big CZcamsrs create title and thumbnails that relates to people because it triggers them emotionally. That's something I'm still trying to learn. Thanks for sharing!
I love how you’re so relatable as a small channel. Keep up the advice. Praying for you
Thank you. I'll continue to do my best.
Really insightful video! Adapting to viewer preferences is key. I've been using boost app social to align my social media content with what my audience wants. It's great for getting content ideas that resonate with my followers. Your point about building a personal brand over sticking to a niche is spot on!
Glad it was helpful!
I use that app too, but for my Insta. Their AI-generated ideas save so much time!
"People want to be spoon fed all the time"
This hits home, I've done so many videos and yet I get both new and old viewers asking me the same thing. Thanks Kevin!
I think it happens everywhere. That’s why channels are repeatedly creating the same content and same message, because people need to be reminded over and over again.
Omg yes! Took me too long to realise this
You’re right, and I feel like this many times. It’s a constant chase and no one realises how much work goes into it (unless they in it themselves) and on top of it I find so frustrating when some new channel come about with one video and boom- they go viral with a very poor quality content! How does that work. If just say stay consistent and you’ll eventually get there. Content creation and YT is growing so it’s still so many opportunities to get big but that’s only if we continue
Yeah, that whole going viral with 1 video thing is absolutely frustrating, but I did notice most of them failed to produce the same thing and their channel kinda dies down after a while. There are some who is able to do it video after video, very rare I have to say, and they always claim they know the 'secret' but really, to me, it is just luck that his video got pushed out of the billions of videos on YT.
The big secret of growing your channel is one of your video getting viral!!! 😂😂😂
@@TamNguyen-ob3no hehe and how to get the video going viral my friend?
@@TamNguyen-ob3no I think no one knows 😂 cross your fingers 🤞
It's pretty simple, stay with a niche until one gets 1-5k subs. As one gets more subs, one can broaden the topics. The more subs, the more range one can test without losing engagement or audience.
Good idea!
In one single channel or different channel for different niche?
@@mohammadfaizlateef2818 don't do different channels or niche until you figure out one channel first. It's not worth splitting your time and energy in the beginning, mental focus is super important
@@Lou_Mansfield it's so tempting to do that especially when "gurus" keep on telling to stick on a niche. My channel is a month old now and I didn't post anything from weeks 2 & 3. And now that I've picked it up , ideas are flooding in in various niches. I actually searched for this as I don't feel like starting from zero again. I know it's only 4 weeks lost but still I don't want to build a habir of abandoning a barely started channel.
Kevin I watch your videos because of you, because I am a fan of you, whatever topic you talk I will always watch your videos because I am your fan, I have watch before the other big channels like Annie and Stephen before but since I came across your channel I don't watch their channels anymore only you, one thing that I didn't liked about Annie and Stephen channels is that I left them comments and they never answered me back, you always do and I appreciate that very much to me that says you care about me, thank you so much Kevin I really like every video you make have a very beautiful and blessed Monday.
Thank you. Their channels are much bigger than mine so it takes damn a lot longer to go through the comments section and respond. I do miss some comments now and then especially if CZcams doesn't notify me but I'll continue to do my best in replying any questions :)

3:26 Rather than niching down, and burning out on content I find the algorithm showcases more readily than videos I felt were more beneficial for my viewers, I created multiple CZcams channels to test different formats, e.g. meditations in Spanish, under ten minutes, and for kids and teens. Once I started going to a recording studio, it's easy to record good audio for my meditations, and the audio engineer can help me edit videos and prepare thumbnails quickly, so producing content for those types of videos is pretty efficient.
I am going to seriously start an influencer-type channel in the next two weeks, and if I need to outsource the editing, so be it. Growing my main channel to the size that it is now required a ton of experimentation across all of my channels, and it's grown rapidly for my niche in less than a year (I started posting at the end of July).
I highly encourage everyone to start multiple channels simultaneously if you have the time and energy to experiment and see what works for you. A second channel can just be a CZcams shorts channel that has clips of your longer videos or a CZcams lives channel with your horizontal and vertical lives that requires minimal editing. Treat it all as experimental trials in a learning laboratory.
Let me know how your experiments go!
@@KevinChee Yep, my main English channel has over 1,700 subscribers (started posting end of July 2023). My Spanish channel just cleared 321 subscribers (started posting end of October 2023). The Ten-Minute Meditation Channel has 44, and the Young Meditator's Club has 15 subscribers (started back in December 2023). I am probably going to run CZcams promotions on the Spanish one to expedite this since I already got the 4,000 hours of watch time this week.
This is the most genuine take on niching. Also, I did not look down on you for having a smaller channel because I appreciate your research on other channels and their performance. It seems so boring to talk about the same thing, and I want people to want to watch my videos for me. What do you think of audience-based content? It seems so much more freeing. I want others to be able to relate to me.
I think you should focus on small youtubers as your audience and do the research for us lol. That would be useful (:
This video was done long time ago, I think I was between 1k - 3k sub at that time. I do videos on my journey as a small channel, growing little by little in my weekly videos. Be sure to check it out :)
@@KevinChee you've grown so much since then congrats! I will check out your other videos (:
Hey Kevin, thanks for making this, I watched the video late last night while doing the dishes, and yes, it's making sense, especially as the spiritual awakening on planet earth is increasing. I believe in 20 years or so, everyone will be completely fine with people doing multiple things, after we break out of this slavery-ridden day job system of "oh you... you my friend, can only do one thing in your life... that is how you achieve "success", otherwise you're a failure."
Keep on keeping on brother. Thanks for this!
I think it is already happening. Everyone is thinking about doing side hustles to battle inflation!
If you have a great idea, but it's in another niche and you don't want to lose views and subs, you gotta switch your mindset. I used to have that mindset, but now I`m simply creating what I feel like creating. No matter the niches. And I got to 144 subs from that. I recommend doing that mindset shift. Make videos cuz they're fun. Not because you need subs.
That's very true!
So I just post what I love

Also I’ve stopped editing my videos, just talk and post, they are getting me a lot more views then trying to edit anything….last 5-6 videos are pure non edits
That's my kind of video as well but I guess it caters to a different set of audience. Having said that, majority of CZcams viewers are here for videos like Mr Beast, aka entertainment, which is he is doing so well.
Most CZcamsrs suggest spending more time in editing with lots of footage but it never worked for me probably because of my target audience.
Yoooo, this was better than any other video on this subject. Thank You!
Thanks man. How’s your channel going for you?

I like watching your videos, regardless. I just like your take on things. But, I do think you’re right: while niching down seems to be what most people suggest, it can also hurt you in the long run.

This is all part of running a YT channel, not every topic suits every viewer. To expect all my subs to watch every video I joyfully create is too far fetched. I guess I still have a long way to go!

Hey Kevin! As alway I am refreshed to hear your points!
Glad to hear that my friend.
Exactly the issue I've been having, thanks for sharing your thoughts
No problem 👍
Yeah certain content that I make didnt get as much views as the others, so having several content pillars would help I think.
That's a great way to explain it.
Ironically the video pulling in the most views on my channel at the moment is a 3 year old video where mic was crap and I didn't put as much effort into the editing, so I can sympathise with where you're coming from :D
Likewise. An almost 2 year old video of mine blew up after 1.5 years and is driving my channels traffic at the moment. Glad it is working but also scary to think my main traffic is hanging on to 1 video.
@@KevinChee that's pretty much exactly the same as what's happening with my channel at the moment, I get what you mean just got to keep fingers crossed it stays popular in search until I get some more mvp videos on my channel 🤞
Thanks Kevin. Once again some great content. You certainly deliver value :-)
Thank you. This is quite an old video, glad it still applies
I've been saying this for a minute!! There's a shift in these education channels and content with creators starting to want to do different content.... Annie failed in that because her vlogs just weren't interesting at all!! Cathrin had a whole other vlog channel that she grew and was like f-it, and just incorporated her vlogs into her main!! I went at Roberto Blake about the same thing, that's why I just started my channel with vlogs and just making videos, idc about rapid growth or monetization I just want to make videos🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
Now that you mentioned it, Roberto Blake's video hasn't been appearing on my Home for a long time. What are you thoughts on his current channel's state?
@@KevinChee My thoughts are that he's running out of content/videos to make!! His last few videos have been repeated in the last 6 mos!! I'm still subbed to his channel because ultimately he has decent content and I can cherry pick different ideas that I think can help me at some point but, like I told him.... he's a growth strategy channel and I'm subbed to "10 of him" so, "Niching Down" won't be for me, it's moreso for education channels and, channels like his that have been around 10yrs.... those strategies are old and some don't apply to certain creators today!! I also told him on his "why you should start a CZcams Channel video" that.... his words in that particular video were very discouraging and that, if someone came to that video to get ideas, he basically made them feel like it's not worth doing!! If you watched that vid.... it started off cool, but then it went dark, as if you'll never be successful on CZcams because of XYZ!! Not myself personally because I basically just make videos whenever, that advice wasn't for me.... but i can see how that information would make someone NOT WANT TO start CZcams!! But OVERALL, his content is decent and i won't unsubscribe because I don't agree entirely with everything he says (hope that wasn't too much 🤣🤣) I also plan to address that in my next video that I'm currently writing out now!!
I just watched that video and for me personally, I think he is just being honest. I like how he mentioned MrBeast, MKBHD and PewDiePIe's struggles at the start. It gives me a bit of hope that hard work pays off and not everything is luck. Towards the end, the numbers he threw in looks big but in the end, it is just how he think to keep himself going on his channel. I find myself being able to relate after creating over 100 videos myself but maybe its just me. I do find his video dragging a little too long though and it can cause a negative effect on the viewer because it gets tiring. Perhaps you wouldn't feel that way if he gets straight to the point.
@@KevinChee no... I'd still feel that way!! The way he used those big CZcamsrs names around like that should be used as inspiration not an unachievable goal!! Those guys are really like the 1% of CZcamsrs and they started at a time when CZcams was barely CZcams ya know?? Just like him, and the times are incredibly different now!! Sure, your hard work and consistency will pay off but once every 10 yrs we'll get a Mr. Beast, MKBHD, and A PewdiePie and most creators don't have that. Like I said, the video had some points but, I can see why if ppl didn't start CZcams, it would be a factor.... still staying subbed though, just a difference in opinion!!
Oh right, I didn’t see it that way lol. I saw it as an inspiration to be consistent with uploads and continuously improve. I guess it can be looked as discouraging to some! Any channel that doesn’t blow up because of ‘luck’ always has my attention. :)

Hi hun, I've watched u for a few weeks now and although I'm just at the start of my journey, I'd like to offer my perspective on this, hope ok. I'm certainly no expert but the last few vids you have done are not the same positive, upbeat, educationaones I saw and that brought me to ur channel. Can I suggest you go back a few steps rather than leaping into a new direction? I think you have a great personality but your not letting that shine because your consumed with ur views. STOP STRESSING and get back to enjoying the journey. Give us some of that original value your good at, go back to some basics on CZcams there is always newbies wanting to learn but show us your positive energy. it feels like the last few vids you are sharing your problems which is great but too early for u, try doing a vid on a topic and don't mention your struggles, don't mean to be harsh but all young youtubers are having these probs but we don't want to see someone else have the issues, we want to see someone who shows us what IS possible, act like you have already conquered youtube and your buzzing to show and tell your audience, hope this makes some sense, go rematch some of your earlier vids and see that shine, bring it back. hope this helps, I know I would love someone to critique my work, it does feel like guess work sometimes but please get back to enjoying ur process, I think your audience might be feeling ur pain and its not wat is needed, you got this, xx
Thank you for the honest feedback. The problem with creating educational videos is at some point, we either run out of ideas or we start repeating ourselves, because let's face it, there's only so much we can discover in order to keep producing new videos. Big channels are always going around in circles on creating good thumbnail, creating good title, audience retention and so on. What are your thoughts on that?
Simplify it. Say you have a topic on finding your niche. instead if covering TONS of points in one video covering asmuch as possible, go simple, find 10 points in that one video and do 10 videos but have fun with it. For example vid 1. too many niches show examples, good and bad, nothing else. vid 2. most popular niches how to find them. 3. how indepth to go in niche wat works wat doesn't. 4, your fav niches, what do u watch and why. get the idea, small points but expand within that, get b rolls off pexel, give ur vids depth, show ur character and humour with a benefit for the viewer but give something away about yourself, be less serious and more focused on smaller, digestible chunks and have fun with it, show us some video of u chatting outside or whilst ur cooking, get viewers to relate but not to your problems but YOU as a person make it more personal,
I can't do my vids fast enough as I get excited about the next one then the next and I'm loving it, go to bed buzzing with tons of ideas and its the first thing i think of when i wake up I feel your not enjoying the process anymore but u have such a lovely way you need to find that again, you've just got bogged down with the numbers, its not a failure ur just finding ur feet in a very big pond but numbers aren't the priority, u enjoying it are.
Recently I created a second channel but haven't started posting on it yet. So a little about my current (main channel), i started posting things about everything Im interested in from skateboarding to swimming, workouts to general sports talk, but I feel like I just have so many different niches and topics that i make on this one channel it gets a bit messy and bad for the youtube algorithsm. I've seen some video do pretty well whilst the others not so much. So i wanted to make the second channel for ONLY my exercise and fitness stuff whilst my current one is just for life/vlog/skateboarding. But the issue is i dont have so much time to focus on both and I also feel too involved and dedicated to my current channel to be able to make that switch all of a sudden. Like it feels like I have to restart everything, not that I have a lot of subs on this channel anyawys but I worked quite hard on it and it has been growing slowly but consistently lately. So i'm quite troubled on what to do and how I should go about, maybe slowly cut down on the topics/niches that are not getting so many views? So just focus on like 2 instead of 5
I would focus on 1 channel first and learn how to build up my audience there. Once I master the basics, I'll then start a second channel if I can manage, otherwise, I'm more than happy to just stick with 1 channel. I do enjoy building my channel up to the point where people are coming back to watch me for me, the topics I chose maybe only affects 20% of the CTR. Big CZcamsrs tend to have that pulling power, people love them for them and can't wait to see what they have to say in certain topics :)
@@KevinChee ok thanks for the reply! I’ll take your advice and keep going with it
Uhhmmmm i subscribed because of your transparency of how much you earn monthly.
I even notice that if you have low views some viewers will not even continue or even bother to click on the channel even if you have a good thumbnail . Better to continue to used google ads and target the same niche like yours. To increase views and subs and bring traffic in your channel .
Yeah, I am one of those who looks at the view to decide whether the video is worth watching lol. But a compelling title usually pulls me in the most. I stopped using google ads to bring in traffic for quite a while now, there's something about it that makes it feel like the subs aren't coming back.
Thank you for your advice 👍🤗

This was the most valuable advice I’ve heard on CZcams to date! Wow thank you so so much 🙏🏾 I’ve experienced burnout twice, switched my niche from two different topics. It’s been a long and exhausting journey (years) but I still believe I can grow my channel in a meaningful way. My channel is my baby. That’s how us content creators view our work. But the truth is we work for free and that is exhausting. I love what you said about comparing CZcams channels to TV channels. 💯!!! Thanks for the compliment! It is difficult to be a content creator and I have burnt out several times, always because I have no idea where to go in this ever-changing environment! Out of curiosity, how did you stumble upon this video? Was my video appearing in searches?
@@KevinChee yes, I don’t remember exactly what I searched on CZcams but it was related to niching down :) keep going. You’re bringing something different to the table, you’re very authentic. You’re gona go far, just keep going❤️
I would say that I subscribed to you for your journey and your opinion on the things you discover. I think that if you had smaller videos that were more directional, you might become a "resource" for people that are trying to grow their channel. But just typing out loud here, take with a grain of salt. :)
To be clear, I am much more interested in these videos than I am in, say, VidIQs that seems to regurgitate content.
To be honest, I did try smaller videos (shorter duration if that's what you mean) but they seem to yield the same result as longer videos. CZcamsrs tend to do longer videos for 2 reasons, 1 - more ads and 2 - YT has the tendency to push longer videos with high retention. To be in my niche has its downside, at some stage, there are only that many resources I can provide before I run out of things to say so I can understand where VidIQ is coming from too.
Good video. I've debated back and forth on niche or no niche
Best answer would be to strike a balance between what you love and what viewers on YT wants.
@@KevinChee true that's what I'll go for it's a win win cause if I niche down then I won't be 100 percent happy and I'll be limited as creator

hi kevin,
I'm also facing the same problem . In 2017 I started my channel with a shortfilm . But you know making a shortfilm channel with my own efforts alone can not make generate money . so i tried multiple niches related to entertainment . Picking a niche does help. If you pick a sub-niche, it will help for a while, and then you'll plateau like me.
I need to get rid of my sub-niche. Hopefully, it will help my channel.
Pick a genre and make a lot of videos within it.
All the best to us!
Mine is same too, very few views. I think it's because seasonal. Summer vacation and too busy to go on CZcams.
You're probably right. Summer tends to be the season with least traffic.
Or how some channels in your same niche get exposure and get recommended, but yours do not…..
Feels unfair doesn't it? I honestly don't know what triggers it and I doubt any CZcamsr knows. Unless of course, you have major CZcams star power then CZcams will endlessly recommend your videos to non-subscribers like 100 times a day
@@KevinChee Facts!!
Excellent points. I've found when I make a video about "How I feel about XYZ issue" ... Then everyone wants to view that video.
Especially when XYZ is a highly controversial topic
Oh wow I actually thought the riches is in the niches? but after watching your video, I'm second guessing now?
Not really. Once you run out of topics in your niche, you will need to expand out of your niche. If you niche down too much, you'll run into the problem of not being able to do other topics of interests. Just make sure you plan this out.
@KevinChee Yeah I'm convinced now, no wonder so many youtubers are quitting sticking to a single niche can lead to burnout, thanks for the video. I guess I'm going multimedia now.
nice video - new topics / off topic don't get much views - coz youtube doesnt think thats your experties aka. "niche" - its hard and a catch 2-2 situation
You can do any topics you want once you have a huge following. Till then, controversial and trending topics seems to do quite well
@@KevinChee 100% agreed. Wording and thumbnails to that effect is artwork!!
@@KevinChee what is huge following in sub count according to you? Also how do you cope up with some folks getting 3M views in 2 hours compared to smaller channels barely getting 200 views? How does that affect the motivation to make videos ?
@@GoodlifeInvestor 10k sub count is a lot to me right now but it tends to change as my channel grow. If I am at 1k, 10k seems huge. If I am at 10k, 50k seems huge. The grass is greener on the other side I guess.
It certainly sucks to see others getting views while smaller channels doesn't but I've learned to accept that's all part of the build up process. My rule of thumb is your view is 10% of your sub count. Hence, them getting more views also depends on their following.
Have a look around and you may notice most channels, both big and small, hits that 10% mark view-sub count. If yours is above 10% consistently then you're doing something right.
@@KevinChee I feel 500k subs is a mid sized channel that I’ll call “decent”. 10k-25k is a teeny-weeny “starter” channel. Anything bellow 10k is a non-successful ‘yet’ channel. And yes it’s harsh…how to look up the view to sub count? I just started my channel a couple months ago, so I only have 2.52k subs so far but I get a lot more views on my better videos…do I need to look up that ratio somewhere?
And that's right. I get bored too.
Always be trying!
same happened to me
Did you change anything after that?
How about switching channel language when I’ve now realised I want to do in English instead of native language? (Currently having a Finnish CZcams Yoga channel with 600 subs and want to stick with the niche but not the language) will I lose subscribers?
I'd say start a new channel. Switching a new language is pretty much starting all over again. If you do not intend to keep your Finnish channel then you can leverage on those existing subs, remove all Finnish videos then upload English ones.
You dont know youtube algorithm now... You need to be in the suggestion and the search collum of yt.. you need niche so the youtube algorithm know what will be suggested to the viewers.. if you changing niche every time you got bored then what yt will be suggested to viewers if you dont have niche...
No one truly knows the algorithm, that I'm sure!
@@KevinChee you dont need to be a programer to learn the algo.. it just common sense.. the algorithm in yt is the viewers.. if they search they will be find.. thats why you need to find the KEY WORDS.. if your nich is been search then yt will give it to the viewers.. even your channel will be pop up... Understand...

Old video. Glad it still applies :)
hey can i ask you something if i spend 400$ on google ads how much views and how much subscribers will i earn
There's no answer to that. There are a lot of factors to take in, such as your niche, your target audience, your competition, your advertising sweet spot, your channel's retention. Google Ads may be able to give you an estimated number of views based on your cost per ad and budget and keywords but for subscribers, that really depends on you and your ability to convert them. Nobody can force anyone to sub to any channel.
