- MatPat is no stranger to controversy and drama, especially when it comes to his FNaF theories. Recently, he accidentally started one of the most dangerous events in FNaF history, all founded on his delusional belief in an nonexistent FNaF ARG. The MatPat controversy got pretty big with news and CZcamsrs alike, so I've decided to break down the situation and share my personal thoughts. At the end of the day, saying that it's just a Game Theory means nothing.

Also, when i read Felix the shark, it gave me the same kind of feeling as one of the Mr hippo lines.

I really think it fits with the final message of the ucn torment in the lore, because i feel like getting a really high score and only giving a disappointing cutscene it's one of the better ways to say what old man consequences was trying to say.

Wether we like it or not, the core pieces in the main FNAF story are put in place. If we can't solve something it might not be because we're dumb, but maybe because there's literally no solution to it.
To me, that's a clear message to let the lore and the story in peace, and not disturb it anymore.
It's the kinda unsatisfying, more satisfying conclusion i could get with this.
MatPat definitely got the OPPOSITE impression from Felix the Shark and The Scoop than the actual message. It's shocking how he took something insightful about overthinking the lore and proceeded to use it to overthink the lore.

I liked matpats videos, though I will say he did drop the ball when it came to this. I think he addressed it and told people to stop but hopefully, this gives him the chance to think about what to do from now on.
I never knew those little pre-teens could go as far as asking if they should DIG UP A GRAVE OR NOT. I think they forgot the "but remember, that's just a theory" part of the videos. I watched many of Matpat's theories, some of them crazy, some looking like they could have some truth to them, and some in between. But harassing places and people was somewhere I didn't think could be reached by this community, especially being that it happened for DAYS. And here are a few reasons WHY this got out of hand.
First, most of the people in that community are pre-teens, meaning they have brains that can be full of nonsense. Second, I don't think they were being sensical with anything and they were thinking too hard that this ARG is REAL. Third, Matpat should've warned people not to go too crazy with this, and leave people alone, don't call them and stuff. And I'm still very concerned about the kid asking if they should dig a grave up or not, how did that even enter there're mind? LAST THING!: I don't hate Matpat. I do enjoy some of his theories, and others not really. Just so you understand that, dear reader.
And... yeah! Those are my thoughts on this whole problem! Thank you for reading this long story like comment.

Pretty similar to my take on the whole thing. At this point "it's just a theory" has become a meme, not a disclaimer.
I think it's more the fact that MatPat was almost explicitly stating that the ARG was real that's the problem. Yes, digging up graves is bad, but to this kid it was a part of the scavenger hunt, or ARG that was all but confirmed.
It kind of made me mad how MatPat was saying things like "we assumed you knew the rules of ARG" when it was HIM who didn't understand and put this mess into those kids minds in the first place. He LITERALLY asked people to go out to places in Utah and call their places of business. Why is he surprised that anyone did it?
I agree! And, it doesn't matter how CRAZY the theory might be anyway, because it's just a theory.
Let's be real! Scott has to deal with this even many years ago. 💀
I also hate how people treat his theories, especially his Minecraft theories like they're actual canon lore.
Tbf he did explain dont take all his theories seriously as alot of them are jokes (like his how big is luigis dick theory)

My favorite part about MatPat's amazing and definetely not rushed and misinformative Security Breach theories was when he brought up the cut Glamrock Freddy line that would have debunked his "Gregory is FNaF 4's Crying Child rebuilt as a robot" theory, and proceeded to tell people that his fans had been telling HIM for years not to use cut content and therefore this line was not cannon... then, literally right after, he brings up another cut line of dialouge from Freddy suggesting that he knows Gregory from before and just calls that cannon because that supports his theory.
Also, for the record, every time other people told MatPat not to use cut content or scrapped ideas in his theories before, he still did. So I don't blame people for pointing out the cut Freddy line that debunks his theory as they probably thought he'd use it and declear it cannon anyways. Like he did all those other times.

Honestly the best thing about the theories in my opinion Is how he went from a decent and maybe plausable theory then couldn't come up with anything else so Just repeated the same one 3 times with each one getting worse and worse overtime with the last one basically going:"Baby and Vanessa both have ice creams so they are both Elizabeth"

My takeaway from this whole fiasco :
First of all, I do enjoy Matpat’s content. (Mostly GTLive nowadays though)
But I definitely agree he screwed up a TON here. He should’ve known considering the past events that you mentioned.
I don’t necessarily blame him for going “Hm, that’s a little specific” when seeing FNaF 3 for mobile explicitly mentioned in an official book, but actually going through with the whole ‘ARG’ idea even after reading all 3 stories, and not noticing the theme/lesson you mentioned is.. stupid.
I think it would’ve been a good idea to check FNaF 3 just in case, but of course, there was nothing.
And besides, the books were scrapped. Any “lore” in them probably isn’t even canon anymore.
I hope he’s learnt from this.

His old videos aren't as meanspirited as his Post-Banana Wars videos, as the older videos were just speculations on real-life elements that inspired video games. That is until his "Peach has Stockholm Syndrome" video where he went full-on conspirator. Ask anyone, and they'll tell you that he presents those later theories as fact, when the evidence in question is completely falsified for his own self-narrative. That's why I believe people hate MatPat; he conspires, he never admits that he's at fault for spreading lies (that affected fanbases), and he calls people haters for speaking out against said lies. In other words, yes, he's insane. BTW, I think you should've gone with "Telling a Pig to Sprout it's wings and Fly"; cliche, I know, but I like the ol' "when Pigs fly" idiom.
At this point I blame Scott Cawthon more than any fans. He's shown he loves trolling his fanbase and everything he puts out seems to answer one or two questions (maybe) while creating five new ones. I think a big reason the fanbase has shrunk so much was it became clear that Scott is very unlikely to ever just flat-out explain the plot behind his games.

In fact, I’d feel more sorry for his own child, because of the implications that MatPat would indoctrinate a kid to hate on characters who aren’t evil; that would be the most heinous thing he would do, considering this is what Nazies do to German children back in World War II. Besides, you did point out how he’s bad at handling conflict, supports charities that result in torture, clickbaiting, and not giving credit to those who are more credible than him. I absolutely hate when matpat tries to use real life science to make his theories work.
It's a basic concept about fiction, it's not real. It doesn't have to equal or be similar to the laws of nature in our existing world.
It only has to obey the inner logic of the fictional world you're currently working.
That's something i don't like about his Mario's theories and also that video about ennard where another person (idk his name) was complaining about the fact that the idea of using a human like a suit was kinda right (?)
using real science is kind of the point of his channel tho, the whole idea is he lures you in with games to teach you stuff about science
Like MatPat said that Sonic’s legs would be completely shattered due to a move in Sonic Frontiers called the Sonic Boom. Sonic is the fastest hedgehog (in fiction) so he is completely resistant to high forces.

I would totally agree with you. There is not too much to add on to what you said. I wouldn't say he is "insane", however, I think he's actually a really good guy. I started getting into FNAF at around post FNAF 4, where it was thought the series would end. I've even heard of the source code issue with the 87's, and how many calls they got. I'm delighted you have brought home this issue, and I know how late I am, but I always thought an ARG like the scale of this one would never be any good. Once again, MatPat makes good videos, and shows his true opinions. But he has been making pretty bad decisions, and I feel like he's already brought this to happen, with him always clickbaiting "THIS THEORY SOLVES FNAF!" and "THE END TO FNAF?!?!", as if he wants fnaf to end in some way. I used to look up to Matthew, but this pulled his reputation down for me.

I think you have made an excellent video covering what has happened and delivered them in a unobtrusive way while making it clear your dislike for matpat you have also fairly assessed that it was more than likely a severe lack of judgement
I mean, the worst part is that in both the actual video and apology video, he starts out by saying that it was supposed to happen, but never did, and then spends the rest of the video speaking of it as if its actually happening right now. I even had to replay the beginning multiple times to make sure he said it wasnt happening.
I feel like part of this couldve easily been avoided by checking his tenses, and making a point to use more past tense based sentences and more theoretical and thought based sentences (i.e. I think theres something, I thought a clue had been planned to be here, and maybe they put it in by mistake, etc) than his use of present tense, and knowledge or confirmation based sentences (I am researching this arg, there is probably a clue here and I am having trouble finding it etc), which made it seem like it was an actual thing rather than something that got canceled.
Yeah, this could have helped tremendously if he still wanted to ahead with the video, along with a disclaimer. It makes it sound like the ARG is a fact, even in his apology video, and that caused a lot of problems and made others worse.

Glad to see a video covering this topic. Mat has gone crazy with this ARG and it has ended in people getting harassed unfairly. Great video covering this, it’s honestly about time someone cover this controversy in a solid way.

But here is the thing, if his audience is predominantly pre teens, then they don’t know common sense well. They have to be taught.
While Mat should have given a list of rules beforehand, or better yet not saying anything at all, he DID give a solution to the problem.

To consider this and not screw up as much in the future. Very simple. I'm well aware that he can't undo past mistakes and reacted as well as he could, that's the entire message of the video; learn from your mistakes and start fixing things before they break, not after.

They just wouldn't listen and still posted saying they would go to Utah and do this shit. Hate how ppl are doing that for clout like wtf?! I'm a bit worried about how he still sort of encourages ppl a little believing that fnaf is real! And not just that, but younger kids don't know better and seeing many of the trolls on the internet this is going to go on for quite a while no matter how much we tell ppl many times to just stop.
I’m an avid fan of matpat and all of his entertaining videos I’ve watched of his growing up and I’m really disappointed to see what this really interesting topic had to boil down to at the end. I still like matpat no doubt but if I had an option I don’t think I would support this level of screw up, at first I thought this video was gonna be some dude just trashing on him, but when I saw the effects of this I was blown away seeing as after I saw the Reddit post about someone getting constant calls and asking for people to stop I really did think it had ended at that. To my surprise your a very thought out CZcamsr and take subjects like these respectable, especially since it’s grown to a scale of this proportion. It’s sad to see one of my top 10 CZcamsrs from when I was younger stoop this low to not being so thoughtful about what type of activities he might be showing his newer audience, it’s like he’s stuck in the past of when he just started getting big back then, not thinking of the consequences of what his giant Channel can do. Thanks for enforcing me in a responsible way and hopefully people who were doing this type of stupid shit can realize how much harm they can actually cause, including matpat. Hopefully he learns from his big mistake because I really can’t imagine a world without the guy. Keep making great vids 🤟
As someone who has also grown up watching him, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. A MatPat comeback where he stops making so many mistakes would be awesome and something I'd love to see, just gotta call him out on it when he does mess up. Matpat is milking the series way too much. I really don't care about one theory a year or 2 per game release, but he really can't stop and start making videos about something that's not Minecraft or Fnaf.
I've never liked the claim much that MatPat was milking FNaF, because he was putting out genuinely interesting theories on it for a long time. Then Security Breach came out and that went right out the window. I wouldn't say he's milking it, moreso that he's just become very shortsighted and disconnected.

I really liked his fnaf 4 to fnaf SL era theories, the dream one made a lot of sense in that time even if I hate the " It's all a dream" theories that every big theory channel uses on Pixar/Disney movie.
Honestly, FNAF is milking itself. The only reason why Matpat makes FNAF content is because FNAF keeps coming out with content for him to analyze. Mat's FNAF theories won't end until FNAF ends.

As awful as this situation was, the idea of FNaF fans digging up a fucking grave because it had "1987" written on it is insanely hilarious to me. Like we're so unhinged we go crazy when seeing the numbers 8 and 7 together and in that order. It's just so funny it sounds made-up. FNaF fans be freaking out when they get the "what's 100 - 13" problem on their math quiz.

I don't dislike MatPat quite as much as you do, but this was another fantastic video. Like I said on Twitter, you're a great voice of reason in this community, especially these days when situations like this appear to be a monthly occurrence.
This is insane, at first, I really liked MatPat, he was a really cool guy back then and his theories (while almost all of them not being true) were very interesting, funny, and somewhat informative to watch. It's sad that he's just lost it and sent so many people out to terrorize Utah bc he just looked at the wrong info.... I do hope MatPat can take a break from this and just.. think about what he's doing and hopefully he can change and actually make some good information/theories.

MatPat did NOT send anyone to terrorize Utah. He found clues that made him think that there might be an ARG. He asked people who “LIVE IN UTAH” for help figuring out whether or not this was real.
At no point did he tell his fans to dox anyone. At no point did he ask anyone to go to Utah. And he certainly never asked anyone to harass someone else.
Entirely correct. The main issue with post-SB fan is, as you pointed out, the fact that they can be fooled extremely easily. The 2015-2016 events should have teached him to not hint at anything outside of FNaF seen the consequences (You know something is serious when a person has to change their phone number to avoid harassment). However, again, most of the responsibility in committing those sort of felonies (Digging up a grave for a game? Seriously?) fall in the hands of whoever believed an ARG was real, not seeing what happened in the past, and also ignoring the text written on every single movie/book i can remember that the characters/places are completely fictional.
Pretty much, yeah. The fandom has returned to being as young as they were in 2015 with all the new kids coming in from SB. I know firsthand what it was like to be a stupid 11 year old because I was one in 2015 lol. It's not fun and I don't wanna mock them too much, but it's gonna become a serious problem for the FNaF community in this day and age with so many people stretching the truth to potentially dangerous levels.

Okay but in all seriousness, Fnaf will most likely NEVER appear in the real world. There wont be a worldwide ARG, and the closest you’ll ever get to real life Fnaf will be the crappy merch. All the little lore bits will be kept in the games and books and possibly even a movie. Don’t be a criminal over a seven-year-old game.
What I found the most ironic of this situation is that the story itself, "Felix the Shark", is a metaphorical take that makes fun of people who over analyze anything FNAF-related (specifically targeted towards people like Matpat).
That's why the main character in that short story got killed over his obsession towards something so small.
Matpat, like the main character in the book, went crazy in an attempt to over analyze a short story that is basically a joke making fun of game theorists, thinking that it was an ARG (Even Scott himself has stated that he doesn't like nor do ARGs).
Yep, I didn't have much time to appreciate it due to the serious nature of the situation, but looking back, it was both hilarious and infuriating that MatPat started all of this because of 2 stories making fun of him. Both Felix the Shark and The Scoop are intended to mock people who do stuff like this. Felix the Shark mocks people who get obsessed over small things and chase it forever. The Scoop mocks people who compare real life tragedies to FNaF lore. MatPat has done both extensively, lol.
Anyone else remember his first ever FNaF theory? The really weird one about real-life 1993 murders at a Chuck E Cheese being a parallel to FNaF 1? Not only was it never true, it's honestly bizarre and slightly messed up, looking back at it now.

genuinely another great video dude! thanks for bringing attention to the situation in an educated and respectful way. people always want me to have some sort of solid justification for disliking MatPat, and this past week has been just that. also, the moderators of his subreddit removing that post have essentially removed a 'victim impact statement' and not seeing something like that could lead more people to make dumb mistakes in the future without considering the true consequences of their actions. you've summed up my thoughts exactly, keep it up! :)

Stuff like this is the reason why i'm an on and off fnaf fan. what the fanbase did to scott after the fanbase found out he donated to some controversial people and the harassment he received made me think hard about being a fnaf fan.
So it's clear you used to be a fan of him but you eventually stopped. What was it that made you decide 'That's it , I'm done with him', or was it more gradual? My personal experience with him was that I was in a strong FNaF phase in 2016-17, so I was also interested in his theory videos, but after that, my interest in FNaF kinda fizzed out after that and I just became a casual fan because with more games, it felt like the lore was becoming more convoluted. So then I didn't was him AS much. I mean, crazy, overthought theories can be entertaining for a while, but it's like 'Can't we first have a final, solid storyline before getting into bonkers assumptions about the little details?'
I started to drift away starting in around 2019 or so, but held no grudges against him. Even came back for a little nostalgia binge last year. What did it for me is the events from late 2021 to 2022 so far. The Twitch video, the Security Breach theories, and especially this are what made me dislike him so heavily. That and being made aware of past controversy I wasn't aware of.

First off very good video I do think you’ve been doing really well with these commentary videos so good job on that front.
Second is that I do disagree massively with your thoughts on matpat for the Fnaf community. Sure his recent theories have been hit or miss (Mikebot was fucking stupid and Elizabeth being Vanny is let’s just say the biggest stretch mat’s done with his fnaf videos) but I don’t think he does it for the sake of views but agree to disagree.
Thirdly is that despite me being a lot more positive to mat than you even I must admit he massively fucked up here. It is dumb how he didn’t think about the other situations (maybe he just didn’t know about them as I recently found about them myself thanks to the fazbear fact blog so that is a possibility) that has happened from fnaf fans being dumb.
Overall this situation was incredibly stupid blunder of Mat’s part which is disappointing to say the least and I do hope it is a reminder to Mat to think first before he posts. However do I think Mat’s an evil person like people make him out to be? No and I don’t think he should stop covering fnaf as I still enjoy his theories Mikebot and Elizabeth being Vanny aside.

I appreciate the feedback greatly! I can actually agree with a fair amount of what you said. A lot of his theories feel like huge reaching to me but they were fun and possible, for Security Breach, the recent ones just seem delusional. After reflecting on this (half the script was written before Mat's apology/response) I could totally see him not just doing it for views, but getting really tunnel-visioned and believing he's totally right.
I would agree that he's not a bad person, just prone to massive blunders, but there comes a time where it's too much. He really needs to turn it around soon, or the community may end up better off without him. I'm rooting for him and used to love his videos as a kid, I actually went on a nostalgia binge of his content last year and that helped me get through having COVID.
@@AmbienceOfficial I agree that his recent theories have been reaching since I would like to say after fnaf 6 (hell part of the reason people think the missing children’s incident happened before Charlie’s death was because that final UCN theory which doesn’t make a lic of sense) but they were always entertaining which I guess that’s the main goal at this point for Mat. I do hope he can prove himself and get into the good books of fnaf fans (hell maybe he’ll make a banger theory like he did with that final time line video he did before fnaf 6 dropped who knows.) I guess my main criticism for these kinds of videos is that you go a bit unfair to people you dislike like theft king in your last video and Mat here. I think there is a difference between criticism like what you give to JeilLiam and being too harsh to Mat and Theft.
That being said some people like the pear gate situation do deserve to go harsh on but it’s just trying to find that balance that you need to find.

I've never been a huge fan of Game Theory, because I can't tell if Mat's being serious with those theories or not. I generally only like watching his streams playing games, and even that lost a lot now that Stephanie is rarely with him.
Not sure how popular of an opinion it was, but for me Stephanie carried GTLive super hard both individually and with her dynamic with Mat. Stopped being interested in it when she left the main show.

I only loosely kept up with Pastra's ARG, but I'd tend to agree. Online ARG's are fun and don't provide nearly as much risk, it'd be a lot better and easier to execute too.

Sorry, but you handled matpat way too bad. Try to see stuff for his side. Every time something bad happens, he sits on his couch and shows everything wrong, If he made a mistake, he apologizes no matter what is happening in his personal life. Yes, he messed up there, But so did you sometime on your life. Saying he became insane is obviously a way to get views, and you should rethink your ways. Not to mention that MatPat NEVER intended to that happen on what he said, he just wanted info in utah geography.
I wasn't even going to dignify this shortsighted and egotistical comment with a response, but I just wanted to share how hilariously ironic I find it that you're accusing me of clickbaiting something while defending MatPat, of all people. Besides that, yes, any human has made silly mistakes in the past and owning up to them is a sign of strength, which I gave Mat ample credit for by the end of this video. The difference is that not every human has 17 million subscribers, an audience almost entirely comprised of impressionable children and teens, and the total lack of foresight to tell that audience to look for vague clues in Utah with no warnings or restrictions whatsoever. That is almost indefensibly stupid.
MatPat does not sit on the couch and own up to his mistakes every time he makes a big one lol. Ever hear of the LegalEagle drama? Or when he was called out by Toby Fox? Or when he supported Autism Speaks? Or any of the other dozen ethically/morally questionable things he does every few weeks that I can list? Didn't think so, because this is the only one that got enough coverage that he had to respond to it.
I don't think Matpat is a bad person and I do enjoy his videos every now and then. That being said, he does do some pretty dumb things. As for what happened with the ARG, although part of it is his fault, he probably thought that his fans would have enough common sense to not do what they did. Although after he made the apology video and in another video he did a little what to do and what not to do when making an ARG in one of his videos, i'd say he learned from this.
I really appreciate this video, it is an alternative view I didn't know I needed and has really opened my eyes. I went into this looking for something different but I'm glad I found this. My initial reaction three minutes in was negative but I'm super glad I heard you out and watched to the end.
It doesn't help that Razzbowski spammed a bunch of videos in 2020 saying that FNaF was real and although it probably was never ment to be taken seriously, it still probably convinced a bunch of stupid kids to think FNaF really was real which somewhat probably lead to this to some extent.
I just remembered his terrible For Honor video that got debunked by a ton of people, and I don't think he addressed it all (could be mistaken). That tanked his integrity to me and I haven't cared about him since.

Okay, calling up business just because someone think there is a ARG by looking through the stories that didn't made it into the books even though really there is none or it was scrapped in the past is one thing, but taking someone's grave is another.
Both are bad and never should have happened. Flooding businesses with useless calls would actively hurt their business and profits, since they wouldn't be able to take as many actual calls and it's just a waste of the employees time, not to mention simply annoying and borderline harassment. Grave robbery is obviously a LOT more screwed up though. Obviously, neither should have happened, but once it got to the point of digging up graves and discussing breaking into private residences, it became much more obvious that it needed to stop.

I've been keeping up with Peargate from the beginning, as I'm indirectly involved. Knew Ramenov in passing, a friend showed him all kinds of sensitive stuff on his major fangame, I helped Kane figure out certain information, etc. Will be waiting to make a video on it out of respect for those involved and so I can work with them directly to make it as accurate as possible. I will say this for now; those devs are an embarrassment to the community and absolutely vile people. My heart goes out to everyone who was a victim of them.

This FNaF ARG should never had started in the first place. After these events, I am staying away from Matpat for good when it revolves around FNaF. His other channels are fine, it's just FNaF that's not my thing with Matpat. Those kids were absolute idiots. Why did they think they were ok? We don't know. Good thing this is over for now. This video explains why I stay away from the FNaF lore. I don't think I'll be back in the FNaF lore for a long time, mainly because of the insanity with this FNaF ARG that doesn't exist. I swear to fucking God, if this happens again, I'm just never gonna come back to the lore and remove the FNaF lore channel from the Discord server and never ever talk to anybody about the lore ever again. We need to do everything we can to stop this FNaF ARG chaos and prevent this from happening ever again.

It's known as the largest autism advocacy and research organization in the US, but has a long history of questionable actions including spreading misinformation about autism and framing it as a disease that needs to be cured. There's also the matter of them spending a very, very low amount of their funds on actual research and much more on giving their top executives $600,000+ salaries. Speaking of which, a very low amount of the people who are involved in running the charity are actually autistic or affiliated with the neurodivergent community in any way. MatPat joined a fundraiser for them in the past and seemed entirely ignorant about all of this; I certainly don't believe he was intentionally trying to do any harm, but it goes to show that he doesn't bother to research important things before acting on them.

Can't tell if by 1:26 you mean the conflict or the clickbaiting. Clickbaiting is pretty self-explanatory, conflict was between MatPat and another CZcamsr named Legal Eagle. Eagle accused Mat of ripping off one of his videos and Mat handled the situation pretty terribly and immediately resorted to spinning it publicly to make Eagle look awful.
For 1:32, many of MatPat's older theories have a bad track record of demonizing mental illness and spreading misinformation about it.
