I love how Dorothy knew the contestant and disqualified herself. Dorothy was a lady of class. Also, she looked very beautiful in this episode.

Pick up his latest from 2022, and stop depending on the large mass media. Books and independent websites and researchers, not tied to the large networks are better at digging out the truth. Seymour Hersh is one well-known researcher who has found the buried truth, far better and unbiased contrasted to the Operation Mockingbird corporate networks and large city newspapers, as are CBS, NBC, ABC, NY Times, Wash Post, etc.

This is my favorite show to end my day with and I was thrilled to see Mr. Nash from my area of Evansville, Indiana. When Bennett talked about the big plant that makes large appliances...I can't explain how I felt, LOL.
My particular favorite Nancy Sinatra song is "Summer Wine." Tommy Sands starred in the 1961 Disney "Babes in Toyland" which I liked a lot.
mine is Some Velvet Morning. Don't know much about Tommy Sands except that it seems unfair he was blacked listed by "Don" Sinatra (allegedly). And I'm a Frankie fan since I was a teenager

@@yougottabekidding7476 Both Frank and Tommy denied Frank had Tommy black-listed. Until very recently, Tommy had a youtube up, and it was heartbreaking. He spoke of his regrets, his mistreatment of Nancy Sinatra, and his birth in- surprise- Russia- not Mexico. He lives in a poor but loving semi-rural home- I forgot where- and his grandson (maybe great-grandson) was with him in the video. It looked like Nancy wasn't providing Tommy a penny, but then she is under no obligation. It's also possible word got to Nancy and she gave Tommy some money and he took it down. He seemed like a nice guy who was down on his luck.

He discussed his life, starting with his birth in Russia, Nancy, stardom, and his wish to go back to work now. I met Nancy Sinatra in 1995 during her music tour. She was a very nice lady, and very tiny!

I have always loved Tony Randall he is such a classy guy. I loved his old movies before he did The odd couple and I loved him with Jack klugman in The odd couple.
Frank Sinatra and ever Nancy denied reports that 'Old Blue Eyes' used his influence and put the kibosh on Tommy Sands career after he and Nancy divorced. Yet Sands career was never the same after he and Nancy broke up.

Tommy Sands was 27, Nancy 24. They divorced later that year, married 1960-65. He was 22, she 19 in 1960 if married before June 8, her 20th; he on Aug. 27. He is now 85, she 82 (Mar. 2023).

People have forgotten that, mostly in large cities, newspapers would publish a "bulldog" edition that would come out in the evening before the were delivered to homes in the morning. My uncle used to go out in New Jersey every night about 10pm to pick up the Daily News.

Nancy Sinatra would file for divorce from Tommy Sands a little more than four months after this appearance, and the divorce would be finalized July 28. Sands claimed the divorce got him blackballed in Hollywood, and he only had one one movie acting appearance afterward (The Violent Ones, 1967), three appearances on Hawaii 5-O (1968-1976), and one on The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries (1978).

Bennett Cerf's "Well, if they didn't go to school with Tony Randall, they can't be Lunt and Fontanne" (18:20) elicited as much of a roar from this viewer as it did from Tony Randall! The "pre-eminent Broadway acting couple of American history" (Wikipedia) was born a generation before Tony was.

To my knowledge Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne never appeared on this program (they do not appear in the directory that I usually consult), but they have been immortalized on CZcams here Helen Hayes, Alfred Lunt, Lynn Fontanne, and Katharine Hepburn and here Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne with German Shepherd . How hideously different things are now. Whenever Bennett or any of the panel travelled somewhere for pleasure, it got mentioned on live TV. Nowadays, most celebrities would keep that sort of thing secret for fear of cuing their stalkers.
In the 60s, if kids, even pre-schoolers, did anything newsworthy, like run a lemonade stand for charity, they’d get their names, ages, and addresses published in the local papers under their photos. Nobody was alarmed. My photo and detaiks were printed in a major city paper when i was just three, trying to hit a golf ball with my dad’s club at a new driving-range. Today, it would be “open season” for predators.
The revolving door was like a cunning riddle which fooled the panel. It brought up the interesting question of what defines a machine - does a machine for example have to contain an engine or motor? I'd say no because a bicycle is a machine without either. This show is light entertainment but often delves deeper than that whilst giving an authentic taste of attitudes (particularly towards working women) and of humour (Bennet's laborious puns for example) in those past decades. Well worth watching.
A machine technically moves an object through space using force. So a lever is the simplest of machines; the revolving door is techincally a lever applied sideways. Pushing on the far end makes the center move, and allows passage through the doorway without breaking the air seal. So, yes, a revolving door should have been categorized as a machine.
To PEG IRISH-also in 1957 SAL MINIO,TAB HUNTER were climbing the TOP POP SONG CHARTS as well as TOMMY SANDS! I think MINIOS song was titled 'KEEP A MOVIN'(in my direction) and TAB HUNTERS was 'YOUNG LOVE' The TEEN IDOL YEARS were now quickly under way and would blossom in full by 1963 and then break down tru 1966.

Thanks for posting these wonderful shows. I was 9 years old when this was on so I wasn't interested but my parents watched it. I vaguely remember Dorothy Kilgallen passing but I have no memories as the whys & how she died.

I can only say, “Bless you for remembering her in this way.” Thus show raises many fond memories.
They were just months away from the end of their five year marriage and Tommy's career was immediately in the toilet and Nancy's father supposedly had 'nothing to do with it'.
And a few months later, Nancy Sinatra and Tommy Sands would divorce. It's always interesting watching these and seeing what came of some of these people and their relationships.

@@dellaroux Yeah, that's what I figured it was about; that's about the time I remember that 💩 ramping up. I was like 8 then; every evening, every newscast, the war report. X amount of soldiers died today. Years of that. People think kids aren't affected by that; wrong! I was continually saddened hearing about young boys getting killed over there. Later, hearing about the Viet Namese civilians being massacred. I was lucky I didn't turn 17 until it finally ended. Anyway, any war veterans out there, thank you for your service; we think about you, even the little kids.

What speech did President LBJ give on February 28, 1965 that the show had to end earlier? I did a search, but not seeing anything. I am guessing it had to do with Vietnam, but not sure.

Nancy Sinatra also sang the title track to the 5th official James Bond film "You Only Live Twice" (1967).
I do not know a single person who hates the title track to that film. Everywhere I have read, there have been nothing but good comments about the song, and Nancy's performance on it.
I thought the title track to "Goldfinger" performed by Shirley Bassey would be the most beloved James Bond theme ever, but apparently not.
For me, either YOLT or On Her Majesty's Secret Service would have to be considered the "ultimate" James Bond movie. Sorry Sean. :-)

Listening to it after some years, I had forgotten just how lovely it was. It is hard to choose between this and the Theme from "Goldfinger". I'll just have to go with my gut on this one and stay with Goldfinger for now. Stay tuned for any changes.
Two of my favourites from Nancy were "Sugartown" and another tune she did with Lee Hazlewood called "Some Velvet Morning". The '60s were filled with great music and Nancy's contributions to the scene still shine.
Since today (2/20/19) happens to be Sidney Poitier's 92nd birthday, I'll speculate that if the #1 Hit title song, "To Sir With Love" had come out 1 or 2 years before YOLT, Bond producers might have hired Lulu instead, due to her Brit connection. My favorite 007 titles to sing are those by Tom Jones, Garbage and Adele.

Does anyone know about that, how true it is, and if Frank still had that kind of pull in 1965? Tommy is alive, 77 years old, and it appears that indeed he did not do much after the 60's.

I think he was a flash in the pan (a failure after a brief and showy start, or momentary sensation of no real importance). I don't remember where I got the information, Linda, it may have very well have been Wiki. Perhaps he makes his living on the oldies circuit (though one has to doubt how well he would do even there) or maybe Frank threw him some cash to go away.
Joe Postove Nancy asked him to call her on Geraldo Rivera's show so apparently she's not holding a grudge. And that's after he said she was a love child. My guess is that Frank didn't do anything to him. I think the way it works in Hollywood is that if somebody doesn't something FOR you, you've had it.

You're right. That does seem a very odd time for the president to give a non-emergency televised speech to the country -- especially one relating to youth! Could he perhaps have been speaking from an event on the West Coast?

With the mystery guests I do note the panel seems to guess they out pretty quickly. And the only reason I think they do is because I suppose being that the show is in New York. I believe the panel, and especially Kilgallen and Francis who seems to guess correctly most of the time read up on what entertainers are coming or are in New York at the time, put 2 and 2 together and .. bingo. They just seem to get these folks to fast in my opinion. Any theories out there anyone on how they seem to guess these folks so fast?
That is certainly one reason. In addition, the panelists often recognized the voices of the mystery guests, and occasionally said so.

No: She wrote her name as "Suzi Murphy." But the way that she merged the "z" with the "i" made it look like an "a" to John Charles Daly.

Yes, it's very irritating when hey do that. Makes it too easy on the panel. IMO only an insecure guest would do this. Like it might be embarrassing to them if they weren't "discovered" by the panel so they make sure that the questioners find them out.

Good singer, decent actor. Very short lived. Soon after this wml episode he and nancy got a divorce. Nancy's father ,Frank Sinatra had Sands blackballed, never to work in the industry again.

Does anyone know if the first contestant ever succeeded as an actress? The name sounds familiar.
Some years ago, there was some discussion of this on a "stand-alone" clip of this segment. (This was long before Gary began assembling his rich treasure trove of complete episodes; in fact, I think it was during the era in which CZcams's time limit for the length of clips posted was either 10 or 15 or 20 minutes.) I think that Suzi Murphy wound up as either a bartender at or the proprietress of one of New York City's lesbian bars.

I think Dorothy gave out a pretty fair clue by asking a question and then disqualifying herself. There should be some standard way to do what Dorothy did without giving out clues. Hmmm. The young lady carries her product from place to place AND Dorothy is a newspaper woman. Wheels are turning.

But she didn't sell Dorothy's paper. I think it's more likely Dorothy knew her from her after-hours "clubbing" activities than through her own newspaper work.
But the other panelists only heard that Dorothy was quitting the game, in addition to the details about her carrying her product from place to place. I don't think it mattered at that point or was known what time of day she worked. I think.

Well, it could be that Arlene got so close to guessing the product because she was thinking along the same lines you are. The funny thing is that it would be pure coincidence even if that's true, though, because Dorothy would be just as likely to have seen her if she was going around to different places selling gum and candy, or any other product, for that matter.
Was Dorothy drunk? She died in the November.
