  • A man is cut off from his son.
NAYSAYER is used with permission from David M. Helman. Learn more at davidmhelman.com.
A young father, Ian, is on the road, speeding down the highway and trying to talk to his wife on the phone. Recently separated from her, he feels he's being unfairly kept away from his newborn son Colin. And he's now taking matters into his own hands.
But when he finally gets his wife on the phone, alliances will shift and feelings will change as new information emerges during the course of the conversation.
Directed by David M. Helman and written by Nathaniel David Shriver, Naysayer features an intense performance by THE WALKING DEAD actor Steven Yeun, who holds the screen on his own with compelling agitation and intensity.
Playing a father struggling to be a part of his son's life, Yeun brings the initial emotional dilemma of the film to life with conviction, and each story beat adds a layer of complexity to our understanding of him and his motives. He works beautifully off of a voice performance by actress Alanna Masterson, who manages to convey a rich spectrum of feeling and realization without appearing onscreen. Character and situation are rendered through excellent and precise dialogue, which masterfully controls the information available to the viewer, while deepening our engagement with Ian as a character.
Visually, NAYSAYER is a road movie, with Ian on the run as he travels through the rich yet desolate desert landscape, a small speck on a vast expanse. The moving landscape adds to the visual dynamism of the short, while also underscoring Ian's isolation and desperation. As the film slowly darkens -- and the sound design ratchets the intensity with a baby's increased wailing in the background -- so does the audience's understanding of what's really going on with Ian.
Using a gracefully executed, emotionally devastating sleight-of-hand, the final twist is heart-wrenching, both for Ian as he confronts the meaning of his actions and for the audience, who gets the whole picture of what is happening, and why. Revealing itself in the end as an emotional mystery, it begs for a re-watching of the short -- and shows how things are never as they entirely seem, especially in domestic conflicts, though it can be easy to make it seem so.

There's many ways to interpret this:
Schizophrenia - The child was a figment of his hallucination that's why even the woman on the phone is not alarmed - because the baby is not real. Yes, it showed he saw photos of a baby on his phone, but that's what schizophrenia does, it makes you believe on things that aren't there.
Grief/Trauma - The baby probably is deceased and he can't cope with the death. My aunt went through that, believe me it took her 2 decades to accept that my cousin (who died at age of 5) was really gone. She believed he'd come back, she believed that he was still around. Would leave a seat on the dining table, his room was kept to how he left it, would still say something like "Sorry he couldn't make it to your party" etc
Dementia/Short term memory - He forgets that he and his wife are divorced, the baby is with her, everything. The clue was her constant asking "tell me where you are". One of the first signs of dementia is not knowing where you are and what you were doing.
I'd like to believe it is more schizophrenia.

I dated a guy with paranoid schizophrenia. I thought we could make it work as I too hear and see things. But he was way deeper in his illness than myself. I didn't let my illness control me or define me. I make an effort to over come it. He on the other hand laid into his illness using it as an excuse for the hurtful things he did and said. He would go on these binges of telling me about how I'm going to die if I eat this. Or do this. He started to obsess over my health and stressing me out. It got to the point where I feared for my life and unsafe I broke it off.
I feel bad for him. I have no clue what goes on in his head but I couldn't sit around and wait for it to get worse.

I was so stressed that she wasn't defending herself in any way either, because I was guessing that she was just being a horrible mother and neglecting her child; and I would think that would make her even more susceptible to hysteria. The father character definitely has schizophrenia. He really thought the baby was with him the whole time. The mother is not keeping him from the baby to hurt him. She’s doing it to keep him from accidentally hurting the baby during one of his bad episodes. It’s all very sad. As someone who used to be with a man that became bipolar then, became schizophrenic I understand the sadness in the woman’s voice. She probably loves the man very much. However, it comes to a point that it’s just not healthy or safe to be around them anymore. They see and hear things and people that are not there. They will literally fight with them and tear the house apart. They will accuse you of betraying them and all kinds of things because, someone told them so, a someone that doesn’t even exist in the real world. Bipolar is seriously hard enough to try to deal with but, schizophrenia is completely impossible. The person they were is gone forever. They disappear and this like demon possessed person is left in their place. It’s very hard and heartbreaking. They really need to keep schizophrenics locked up in special facilities for their own safety, as well as everyone else. 😢

By the 4 yr mark, I was afraid he'd kill me in my sleep. I finally left for the 3rd & last time; I've since realized he was emotionally disturbed, in the truest sense. Beware of charming, malignant, violent narcissists. They walk among us. "Demon- possessed", indeed. When you see their eyes change during an episode, you KNOW it can really happen, it's not just in horror movies.

I did notice that when she says stop talking and listen, the baby's crying changed a little, kinda like it was coming from the phone. I should have realized it then.

That was chilling. Reminded me a lot of my relationship with my ex aside from the delusions of having a child with me. I mean the type of conversations we'd consistently have to have about why we wouldn't work but still knowing deep inside we need the other. Depression/mental health/anxiety is all a scary thing. :/

What appears to be a simple short movie is very complex. The complexity is caused by how abstract this short is, this abstraction interacts directly with each viewers personal experience and background. Hence each viewer sees what they want to see. That phenomenon is a genius Of a good literature, art and movie that evokes emotions to a point that a viewer to become part of the experience

@@sq6394 SPOILER !! as far as I can tell, the baby is with the mom. The mom is (and has been) concerned about the dad's mental state, and she was asking for his location so she could get help for him. The last thing she said was, "You say the baby is with you?" and then the baby's cries faded away as he began to realize the reality of the situation.
