Did you put a clear coat back on or just leave with single stage paint? How is it holding up to temp and sunlight? I worry about pealing is why asking..
I didn't apply clear coat MrStan . The paint job stayed really well with no peeling after being through 3 Canadian winters! My most recent video uploaded i refinish aluminum rims and apply clear coat ; here's the link : czcams.com/video/Qbmx1IQN1Ag/video.html
I want one of those sandblasters now. Etching primer helps to hide imperfections. Its my go to.
For any of us that drive old vehicles .... we just try to keep them looking good ....... a lot of us can't afford the vehicles we want and we certainly can't afford being raped at body shops and mechanical shops to have work done .... I have worked 40 plus years in the automotive industry in Toronto and the GTA and have learned enough to order parts and do it myself .... Cheers to backyardmech for doing and being just that ....
Thanks Pat - that means a lot coming from someone in the auto industry as long as you !
Raped is probably not a great word to use in this context bro
Asbestos was phased out of production back in the 90's from brakes and all stock was ordered purged then also.
My "REAL BUDGET" starts at Dollar Tree...Sturdy brush, putty knife, oil drain pan (today it's my wash bucket), bottle of Dawn, box of SOS pads, bag of Sponges, masking tape and box of Whoppers or Raisinets ($8) Go to Walmart...2 spray cans of 2X Rust-o-leum silver metallic furniture paint. ($9) Rustoleum is my primer.
Great Job.Very helpful
You must be a Newfie! Awesome and thanks for the video. Cheers from Alberta
Cape Bretoner actually - good call Big Red . Glad you liked the vid !
Very helpful. Was going to trash the rims. Will give it a try.
It's worth a shot Piri - i was happy with my results. It's hard to miss when it costs $52 for a gallon of paint and i only used about a fifth of the gallon !
Very good results 👍
No way I could tolerate all the wire brushing, spraying, wiping, chipping and sanding. A heftier sandblaster, (with good flow at 125 psi), and the wheels would be ready for prime/paint way quicker and easier. And tires do fine with a sandblaster with a bit of care. Tape off the tires with wide masking tape, prime and paint and you're done.
looks like the timmies and bud light helped make this job a better time. Cheers thanks for the video
Hi thanks for the video, Where you buy this paint? And also is this oil based paint?
Plenty of good advice and a good job for just paint and a sandblaster!
Thanks Michael ! it was a quick job but the wheels stayed good to this day
I’ve got a 2007 Toyota tundra with the same issue and I am going to follow your lead on how to correct!
Thank you!
Great job all I need !!!
have some (2015 silverado/tahoe rims 20x9 polished finish) with some oxidation/hazing on the aluminum face it looks like clear coat damage... eny thoughts on how to repair them? Do I just polish them? I see allot of people remove the clear coat sand them with different sand paper grits and then polish them?
"refinish them on a budget"
Not everybody has a big compressor and blasting equipment at home, you know...
Then use paint stripper and sanding disks.... obviously practice on the rear first as you can take too much metal off real quick.
if you already don't know look in to diluted muriatic acid and see how easy it is. Use baking soda/water to neutralize after that.
Looks like a good end result after some time and effort well done.
Should've sprayed two coats of high build primer, & sanded with 400 grit sand paper. Then put the paint on the smooth surface.
Great job without too much time, money and materials. Love the end result as well 👍 This was really helpful and is there an alternate suggestion without using a sandblaster? Thanks again!
use a drill on fast setting with a 3" or smaller pad going from 120, 220, 360 and to 500 grit sandpaper.
Thanks for the vid, its a little too much work for me , I think I can buy new ones for $500...Was it about 8 hours of work?
That rust paint can lid needs some rust paint as well
Nice job amigo
Thanks Sidronio ! the rims stayed in good condition - still on the car today
I don’t have a sandblaster any ideas ? Just sand paper ?
How does the saying go? “You simply trained in the darkness, I was born in it”
You said on a budget. How many people own or have a sand blaster in their garage?
They cost like 20 bucks and you can do it outside without a special booth
Me
Tool rentals exist
So much better!
A garbage bag works a bit better for covering your tires, just FYI
Your distant relative must of been a bear. Mosquitoes must hate you. Kudos to u sir.
You’re gonna be stuck in the same boat I was, and be forced to spend 4 hours per wheel sanding then down the old fashioned way. Some stock wheels are worth keeping, and I always refinish my stock set so I can have nice stock rims on the car should I ever sell it. This is why a good few the commentors below likely have cars ranked as Fair on KBB while my cars retain an Excellent rating.
Good job 👍🏻 next time take of the wool sweater 😆
Where did you get those rims tho? They cool
Those are 300c factory rims
Lots of elbow grease there. Good job. What is the color of that Tremclad paint? gloss aluminum?
Rustoleum and all the paint you get in stores are mainly ACRYLIC, and they never really cure. The only type of paint you may use is some sort of polyurethane (2 component paint). The worst with acrylic is that when it just ever so slightly heats up (sun, or any other source of heat) it becomes tacky again.
I've ruined quite a few items with acrylic paint in the past, ranging from rims ... to guitars.
I've learned my lesson, now it's polyurethane or nothing.
Think I'll just sand mine smooth and paint flat black. LOL
Alrighty so I used a wire brush and Limeaway (calcium lime and rust) on my rusty wheels… they looked brand new in about 3 mins each
Should have used aviation stripper first , sandblasted second then sanded them , they would have looked new, also index cards around the rims are easier
aviation stripper?
@@carrotytucker it's a stronger form of paint stripper
heads up, brake pads don’t contain asbestos anymore
Are you confident on that?
Not bad indeed all things considered.
In future use jb weld to fill pittin after sanding up to 600 grit then use an acid etch then filler primer and finally topcoat.dont paint the car if that is hour paint work
Youve made hard work of this video instead of using the sand blaster with the "wire" brush!
Wow !!!!
Best if you use etching primer first
I just put Vaseline on the tiles or petroleum jelly stops the paint stick into the tires👍🏻
With cost of equipment, and material, it's better economical to buy new ones like desert rat or summit racing with due respect
I'm a moron, I just put new tires on today I should have done this with the old tires on
next time take the wheel weight off first
And the centercap
That wire brush tho. Lol
koma
I do a better job with sand paper and rattle cans
Jesus! smh.
Wow, that looks terrible.
Quick n dirty lol
Don't worry, it won't last long either.
😂
That’s looks a lot better than before
He did say “quick and dirty method”….
good job but, to much work, I will use them for winter beaters, and buy some nice rims for the summer. my time is worth more than that to me. I'm not lazy. kx
How are you gonna say it's too much work, then say your not lazy in the same sentence
Cj Gaming This fucking guy 😂
Looks terrible, luckily the paint won't last to much either.
corruption
Litterally saw your comment as he said it 😂
Meh
If that's ur best. Just pay some one that has the experience and pride to do something right cause I suck at what u touch. I can just see it house. I bet your wife does not ask nothing from you to do around the house. Because there is a thing called pride when one does something and you need to go back to school and register in class 101 which teaches us in having integrity and pride when doing anything.
Mancy.
Love the need you feel to be angry at a video. Just scroll away dude
Wow manny you are an ass hole. Totally unnecessary. Just turn it off if u dont agree
You gotta take pride in your insults. Just pay someone to make insults for you. I bet your wife never asks you to insult things she watches.
I like your sweater, does that come in a v-neck? 😂🦧
