This guy killed four people, and didn't get the sentence requested by prosecutors? What possible mitigating circumstances could there have been for the judge to refuse imposing the higher sentence?

one thing ill never understand about canadians/americans is their thrist for revenge. do you seriously not think 17 years is not long enough for someone to be sentenced? imagine taking your whole childhood up until university and keeping you locked up in a cell for that long. thats how long these people are being locked up for, its more than enough. i swear it seems like all you people want is to just punish and completely abandon these people. isnt the point of punishment so that the person learns their lesson and moves on with their lives? become useful productive members of society? how is that gonna happen with them being in a prison cell for more than the already 17 years and you want more. people like you only think of revenge, not how to actually fix these issues. you just want to punish, not rehabiliate. disgusting attitudes

…should be 4 life sentences…instead of merely 17 years. This clown (driver) knew exactly what he was doing by getting behind the wheel of his dated sh*tbox on that particular day. Moreover, the clown’s insurance probably maxed out in terms of his small/inadequate auto insurance policy. The victim’s husband/family should pursue all available legal options against this clown to the Nth degree.

This is in Canada. No consecutive life sentences, maximum 25 years and most times get statues dangerous offender. meaning they will 100% be in prison for 25 years, then after that they can eligible for parole and can “make a case” for their release and need to prove they are no longer a dangerous offender. Based on their crime in most cases they won’t be let out anyway meaning they can be kept in prison up until their death if not deemed safe a dangerous offender and have their parole denied. An example is Paul Bernardo.

Well Canadian "justice" strikes again - The Judge gave the defendant 34 months credit for "just under two years" pre trial custody...WHY! Well because in a bleeding heart country like Canada all judges are mandated to do everything in their power to lessen all sentences in many different ways. The defendant has "14" yrs left of his sentence however he will most likely be out in about half that because of all the other loopholes etc. Also what prompted the Judge to give him a 20yr ban from driving again as opposed to a lifetime ban, guess the Judge would have gotten in trouble from the Liberal Govt.

Without question, the gravity of this criminal act was entirely deserving of life imprisonment with no chance of parole, but the Canadian legal system has major flaws in many areas (not unlike the Canadian Constitution itself).
The other issue is that at the time of this fatal crash, the convicted killer was being pursued by police in a high-speed chase, which clearly contributed in creating the conditions for a disaster like this to potentially occur.
A serious discussion should be had on outlawing high-speed police chases, especially around innocent people in residential areas (this crash did not occur on a highway, but at a busy intersection).
Officers in pursuit could have just recorded the license plate number of the fleeing vehicle, and later set up a sting operation for surveillance of the car's registered owner.
That doesn't let this reckless criminal off the hook, but matters were clearly made worse here by the high-speed police pursuit.

Recording the plate is one thing, unless the car is stolen. Best thing i can think of, is to create a boundary and block them in, catch them once they slow down.
Its a catch 22 because it also sends a message to would-be criminals that to get away all you have to do is drive fast and they stop chasing!

His reckless, wanton actions took 4 lives that can never, and will never be replaced or forgotten. Justice demands that his sentence should reflect his actions. He is NOT a child in my mind, a 17yo who is able to get a licence to drive on the roads, knows DAM WELL whats right and wrong.
Even 17 years, minus the time hes already spent....minus good time in jail, and hes out in 5-6 years. Still able to live his life. There are no winners, thats for sure. Only justice now, should be the winner if there is one at all.

Back then $400 monthly was a fortune that no 20 years old could afford unless they have a good reason. Insurance for over 30's was a reasonable $500 annually. Today everyone pays around $150 no even with good driving history. Our government is busy regulating industries that do not need regulation, and allowing insurance companies to set the rules that suits them. Why would a 20 years old looser have a car insurance in the first place ?

This accident happened in my neighbourhood, and people did not come together .
This tells me the value of any single individual in Canada, great country indeed.
Canadian laws encourages criminals , these laws are against the intrust of the people.
Person who is judge in the right mind would definitely give government the shot to change it but it’s not being done and this proves the criminalization of judiciary against public and more over public does not demand justice they are sleeping.

God bless the victims and their families. Most people who enjoy alcohol are responsible, but there will always be tragic situations where innocent people lose their lives. All it takes is one person to cause this level of damage, this is the cost of having alcohol in our society.
