My favorite Christmas carol. Sang it many times in my younger days. Thanks for sharing. Rich, vibrant voices not overpowered by instruments. Beautiful setting. Nice blend. One of the best versions on this channel IMO.
As they say, there are no atheists in a foxhole. Hector was obviously in a foxhole, when he composed this. No atheist could possibly compose this God-inspired, heavenly music. I pray this type of music turns all atheists into believers in Jesus Christ. Amen.
@@marymilligan2330 God inspired is absolutely right. God's Spirit can work through whatever part of us does believe, and there's always a part that does, even in an atheist. And sadly, in those of us who do believe there can be parts that don't so much... but we can pray to God to remove those!
Someone said Hector was an atheist. Well, most Frenchmen are baptised and christened in the Church and most of them eventually receive the last rites. So in between they can deny everything if it helps their contributions in music, literature, painting etc. So Hector when you composed this beautiful piece you must have slipped briefly into a spiritual place. Merci, Hector.
This is taken a bit too fast at the start. It lacks soul. Fortunately, it slows down a later ! Remember hearing this sung in the cathedral in Nice - Christmas 1989. Wonderfully French !
That is precisely what I was thinking! I have been estranged from this wonderful song that has been dear to my family, for many years without knowing its title, but having finally found it, and this is the slowest rendition Ive seen so far. But I remember it being slower, and so it should be, to savour and be enveloped by such magical transitions.
@@ruthshortland5864 Undoubtedly they do. And I'm sure nobody thinks that something has to be slow to be holy. But there is an appropriate speed for the music and the harmonies, and in my view - and that of others, apparently - this isn't it.
Couldn't disagree more. It's no lullaby. This piece feels in the long tradition of pairing text spoken by shepherds to music meant to invoke peasant dancing. Any slower, and the piece ceases to dance.
One of my favourite carols. Haunting music not overshadowed by the organ.
Perfect mix of wonderful voices. Well done.
Exquisite. Top marks for the trebles!
oh I love this so much my eyes are watering
A choir as perfectly balanced as it's possible to be. Congratulations !
profound
A profoundly deep theological truth.. Berlioz put to music. Transcends human understanding.
Absolutely gorgeous my favourite Carol soo peaceful 🌅🕊

How does this not have billions of views
A Royal Fav of mine! I play this often. First heard it when I was in JHS . * "Guide thee, safely, through the Wild" *
Perfect tempo. Just lovely
used to sing this in malmesbury abbey as a child ... we probably sounded more like shepherds than choristers
One of the outstanding carols
Lovely lovely lovely lovely lovely
My very favourite carol... love the Alto part.
A memorable performance. Voices very well blended.
This is my all time favorite chorale. Please never delete this. Outstanding!
My favourites Christmas Carol.
....beautiful
thank you ....
this carol calms me
Hauntingly beautiful ......
Absolutely outstanding! Just beautiful. I can't stop listening to this carol 💕
How can anyone put a thumbs down for this beautiful piece?
I suspect it may be the tempo, rather than the singing of the choir or the music of Berlioz, that is causing the downvotes!
They're Islamist
It's marked allegretto. Sounds about right to me.
Beautiful music, and with beautiful words too. Jesus, you really are the Lord of my life!
The composer was an athiest.

the spiritual needs no god, the beauty of the myth is also a rite of holiness
@@esarfmij Bless you James, but what utter tosh!

Another choir that takes this far too fast - check out Trinity's version, which makes the most of the lovely harmonies.

‘far’ too fast’s a bit strong, Trinity’s is good though.
I will never understand why people think something has to be slow to be holy? They sing this beautifully and with feeling.
