Hi Janne. The events in this movie happens at 1974/75 era when Turkey intervened Cyprus problem. Rıfat - the son of the mayor - died there. After getting the terrible new, the mother burries the TV in a grave because the bodies of KIA soldiers were burried in Cyprus or nearby mainland graves. She just wants something to burry and has a grave. You'll see this this detail in the next movie.
It is not a village where these all happening, but most probably a town - a city may be. Towns or even cities looked like that in eastern and some western parts of Turkey in that era. Caharcters are drawn very precise. The mayor - the person everybody loves and respects but has autority issues with his own family. The going-bold-guy, a classic low class government worker; the equip who brought TV to the town from Ankara - very calssic government staff from central government institutions. The mother "Siti" is also a classic character with open mind but no education and strong religous believes.
In the end of the movie everything gets twisted. The mayor starts to drink, his drunk son goes to a mosque and refuges to god. Rıfat's girl friend is married to son of Cinema owner - do you remember he allways asks his father "dad.. what about the thing I asked you, any progress?" and he allways said "I tell you to wait, I'll handle it, it is on me, be patient.." and you wonder what it could be he is asking to his dad for all movie long and in the end we see what really it is - the wedding...
This movie is a cult movie as you mentioned, it will never be forgotten - there are a few more movies like this - became cult and in my opinion 2 more of these cult movies belong to Yılmaz Erdoğan. I advise you to watch the next movie "Vizontele Tuuba" and "Ekşi Elmalar - The Sour Apples", both movies the tell the same era and are good movies, specially the sour apples would tell you a lot of things about Turkey and it's past.
I apologise for this awfully long comment and I appreciate how you watch and react movies objectively - keep doing it :)

The old, _suit-n-tie-till-I-die_ dude uptight and conversing with the news reporter on his own though.. 😆 brilliant critic on the perception and relationship of the people with the remote representation of the central government. Though it may seem cartoonish, it is factually right, indeed. Especially for the lower-social-capital members of the generation which witnessed the foundation of the Republic during their early adulthood. To them, the central government is a legend, a myth, almost god-like. Not so easy to understand for us milennials though, eh? :)

Hello Janne! The song at 3:54 is called "Aydın Aydın - Zap Suyu". "Zap Suyu (Zap Stream)" is a natural water stream which connects to the Tigris River in Mesopotamia. Some of the lyrics from the song are like this:
Zap Suyu derindir geçit vermiyor (Zap Stream is deep and non passable)
Çağladıkça dağı taşı deliyor (Pierces through the mountains as it ripples)
Aldığı canı da geri vermiyor (Doesn't give back the life it takes)
There is also an another approach to the "Zap Stream" from the Turkish Armed Forces. During the ongoing conflicts between the Turkish Armed Forces and PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) - which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the UN - Turkish Commandos march with a poem called "Zap Stream" to keep the moral high amongst the soldiers.
And I want to clear another confusion at 5:07 . The mother "Siti" says "Don't forget wear your underpants." to his son "Nafiz". It's because that the night before at 4:47 when Nafiz and his wife were making love to each other their voices were heard by Siti. That's why in the next morning Siti says "Don't forget to wear your underpants.". It's kind of a warning to them for being quiet next time when they make love.
Love your videos. Keep up the great work! Much love from Turkey!

Let me tell you one more detail about the movie. In them mayor's family, the oldest son is a drunk man who does not care about his family or does not have a job. He lives like a homeless guy with no responsibilities. The other son is carefree as well. He only cares for women and having fun. The one who is called for military duty, the one who dies in a war, is actually the responsible one, the one who respects familiy and society related values. But he dies. Similar tragedies happened in Turkey. Usually it is the child who is loved by everyone, the child who respects everyone, the child who is most responsible who dies for any random reason. My nephew, who had all the good qualities I mentioned, died at the age of 13 while working in the wheat field. A very tragic death, I cannot describe. My sister changed for good after her son's death. Her other children are careless and do no really have respect for family values. But her late son was the perfect person. Very sad.

The thing about the "sad marriage", I didn't hear it for a long time but, used to if a family has a alcoholic-gambler-punk-pervert (or all together) sun. They force him to merry, bc they believe when he has a wife and child he ll grow up and take responsibility. But far as I know, that's never happened.

Did you recognize the actor Tolga Çevik? You’ve seen him in Organize İşler as the Superman :)
It’s quiet a turn since in that movie he was playing a character with a proper İstanbul Turkish and was a pitiable yet so kind and polite man who didn’t know what to do with his life anymore and was ready to end it. Basically as a broken gentleman.
But in here he plays as a more close-minded person who doesn’t think about his actions or the life itself, with a broken Turkish, an immature personality and not polite whatsoever.
You probably noticed the actor but the big difference between the characters and how differently Tolga played them amezes me so I just wanted to point it out. I’m glad you liked the movie.
