  • Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost features arguments for and against the Christian God. Whose side was Milton on? Was he devout Christian? A defender of the faith? Or does Paradise Lost subtly critique Christianity and expose certain absurdities in Christian theology. Scholarly opinion on these questions is mixed. In this video lecture we'll dig deep into Milton's account of God and ask whether or not Milton really does "justify the ways of God to men."
This lecture will explore the philosophy of Paradise Lost as well as John Milton's theology.

I was reading this at work a year ago and someone took me for a high schooler and said, "You probably hate reading that now, but you'll appreciate it when you're old like me," and whispered when he left, "Satan's the best character!"

lol. That's a great story, Melly. I kind of want to do a video on just how influential Milton's Satan has been. I think we STILL see versions of him in all kinds of movies and TV shows.

Speaking to the historical stuff about the civil war.
Satan’s speeches, however convincing, point to how easily the masses, the people, can be manipulated.
Of course, Milton’s own political biases must be accounted for; but might he have seen the worst of republicanism as well?
I am not inclined to think of Satan as a hero. He is presented sympathetically, sure, but he sucks. God also sucks in Paradise Lost, so this isn’t some sort of “gotcha!” if you know what I meant.
    What a poem.

For sure. I think Satan gives us a pretty accurate representation of a demagogue. His speeches sound good, but the content, and his intentions are clearly very bad. Lots of scholarship likens Satan to Oliver Cromwell, one of the leaders of the English revolution who eventually became a quasi-dictator. It's possible Milton is using Satan to think about the failure of the republic to live up to its lofty ideals.
Satan is an advocate of liberty or independence, and we tend to prize those things highly, but, like Plato, I think Milton is suggesting that divorcing freedom from goodness can only lead to suffering.

On some level, I get the critique of Jesus' sacrifice because of the whole being God thing. But also, Jesus is famously not the only guy who will be enjoying an eternal reward and salvation from wrong deeds on earth. Cheating death is kind of like the whole point of Christianity. If Jesus doesn't really die, that's because WE won't really die
