I do think there is a definite difference between the now colloquial term shadow work and Jungian "Shadow." Indeed unconscious, unintegrated aspects are no longer a shadow once we bring them into the light. This can happen in therapy and I think to some extent in dreams and ritual. Like you said "trying to make whole" is what we endeavor to do in therapy and to a lesser degree in our spiritual work with tarot. Deep shadow and deep trauma is not something I try to activate either in myself or in others with tarot or anything for that matter. We in the tarot community talk a lot about spiritual work and being honest with ourselves and I think for many of us it's facing the hidden and maybe oppressive aspects of our personality, community and culture. I agree with much of what you say here and thank you for elucidating many aspects of language in our community. My shadow deck is actually the Chrysalis tarot. Go figure. Thanks again.
Hey Renee, I definitely see Shadow and Trauma as two very different things, the latter not being very suited to try to work with through the cards on one's own. I think we've established that Shadow Work is a thing in Tarot world, which is a little different from Shadow, but I do "try to make a whole" with that incredibly deep, meaningful and important work. Because the work is about accepting these parts of myself that I'd rather not look at (negative and positive alike), I definitely come out of spending time with the cards as having made a step towards "becoming more whole again". It's fine if we all use the Tarot in our own way, it's an incredible book of life that mirrors ourselves back to us
I really enjoyed this. To me, definitions change too - one word can mean different things to different people, and so I’m not a big fan of gatekeeping this type of thing. As you say, Jung did not use the word “shadow work” and so there is no formal definition for this word...it is not surprising then that “shadow work” differs from person to person. I don’t think any of it is wrong really, and at the end of the day it’s semantics- I believe that people are really saying that they are working on understanding themselves better through the use of cards. ❤️
Tarot Your Truth I couldn’t agree more! Thank you for expressing it so clearly :)
I think the best shadow work decks may be the ones that reach back to your childhood. So... that could be a deck in a style that was popular when you were 0-5, or a nursery rhyme deck or other "kiddish" deck that takes you into your childhood, or back to your earliest memories and even before your earliest memories. I think any deck that touches or taps into the things you loved wayyyy back in your earliest days is more likly to open things inside you that you had forgotten.
I joined a chess club in my late 30s and I reached down to move my knight and I practically had an out of body experience where I suddenly remembered my dad's marble chess set that I hadn't seen since before I started elementary school. I don't think I ever had a fancy baby nursery, but I find that cards that look like nursery wall decorations tug on those parts of me. (I did have illustrated nursery rhyme books, so I did experience those illustrations at a young age).
I have some associations around the last unicorn movie, and even some blocks around it, due to things that were going on around me when thyme movie came out (and I was very excited about the movie), so when/if I ever get that deck, I already know it's going to be for shadow work.
I think if dark decks hit to the core of what you love, of course they will work. If they scare you or you don't connect with them then their dark creepiness won't help. I *was* as achild, always drawn to a "morbid" esthetic of things like skulls and roses and daggers and snakes (tatoo art kind of stuff), I love the nightmare before Christmas, etc. (I don't fine dark decks as scary or creepy either, I find them quite beautiful and am very drawn to them, lol)
Your deck is beautiful. I do want it 100%. It makes me think of brocade (another thing I love)
Lol... that was long!!
@@ultravioletpisces3666 It was perfect!
This video expresses lots of my thoughts and ideas on this, so THANK YOU for making it. 💖
Kelly-Ann, you ROLE MODEL ✨🌷✨🌷✨🌷Thank you for (first of all: commenting, you've actually made my day that much brighter) being such a good teacher about Tarot, Magick, Shadow, Self-love, doing whatever the hell you want, and overall for being this kick-ass FIZZY energy in the world. Love you
@@AstralLadyTarot 💖💖💖 Thank you so much, doll! Your reply brightened my day in return. 😁 So glad you started making vids. Your work is awesome and you have given me lots to chew on since you came to CZcams xx
Literally two women down here in the comments that I absolutely adore and have learned so much from here in this community. So much love and respect to you both!! 💖🌟😍-Angela
Very good understanding. Thanks.
loved this video. thank you. quite frankly, i never even heard of "the shadow" or "doing shadow work" until i watched kelly ann maddox. i don't do "shadow work" and have no intention of starting. interesting topic, however.
It's funny. I often feel I can't use the cards without delving at least one toe into the pond of Shadow Work 😅
Very helpful. I’ve operated under the assumption that a shadow was something I was unaware of but now I see how I know my shadow but I don’t work with it. Now I see how I can engage
my shadow and accept how it operates in my life and why.
Since I've started tarot I didn't really know what to call my connection with the cards. Basically the cards draw a part of my subconscious that I've potentially buried. I suppose that's "shadow". I've had a profound connection with shadow work. Honestly its all I know. Thanks for making this. I love your videos.
Thanks so much!
I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Thank you, Anna for contributing to this conversation!
Thank you for making the video asking the difficult questions! Love it
I liked your thoughts a lot. Personally I think any deck that facilitates that kind of triggering that makes you aware of icky stuff maybe even more strongly than the classics can be a "shadow work deck". Mine is Crystal Visions Tarot, which is so nice and soft and girly and gentle but with me it has that effect. Didn't even think to have a "shadow work deck" until I found this one in a store and it intrigued me so much what reactions I'd have to the cards that I had to get it for this purpose alone. 🤷♀️
That’s so interesting! Cool that you went for it
I think it really hasn't been my "darker decks" that have pulled out my shadow. Honestly I think pictures that I'm repelled by And those I've been drawn into have tugged at my shadow. Those that you connect to on a strong level tend to pull shadow. As you learn tarot you start with wrote responses... this is what a card means. As you add shadow work (lifting shadow aspects in yourself) you truly learn the cards. You have better understand and add to your resource of what a card means. I think becoming fluent in tarot you almost need to meditate with the cards. Pull all the resources and if you can't see the shadow aspect of the cards its a flat read.
Hi Danielle. I believe that's a good thing you've described: to do this work with any deck, basically. After all, it's the Tarot as a whole. I definitely agree that we should always be able to see shadow and light, or conscious/ unconscious in the cards, and being able to find parts of ourselves in all of it. Thank you for your insightful comment
I agree, I felt repelled by the Influence of the Angels Tarot but at the same time it was pulling me in. It feels so delightfully creepy.
Totally, I started my shadow work with the wold unknown tarot ans Hansen roberts. And the oracle decks were considered "fluffy" they were work your light and the divine feminine oracle and they called me out.
I have heard about the darkworker in tarot. I guess it is the same shadow workers. But i also heard that it is strongly related to work with demonds.
Such an interesting reflection, you really dug into the heart of what we are really getting at when we speak about "shadow work"! 😍 So much to reflect on and think about, the concepts of something that is technically wrong becoming right when the majority accepts it was SO interesting and true 💚💚 Also that Hierophant detail, hmmm, now I want to research it as well!
James Feeney Ha thank you, the only one (I think? So far, at least) who got back to me on that Hierophant detail 😅 Maybe I’ll accidentally bump into it. It has to be something historic.. we shall see
Doe bv twee daily pulls.
Groetjes
Hi Anna, great video thank you. You could send an email to Patrick and ask him directly about the figures in the Hierophant card? Then you could tell all of us who are now wondering. Wishing you a Happy belated Birthday!!!!
Lovely thoughts, thank you for sharing. I was disappointed to see Oroborous (I know you did a VR to 3 of Swords) has taken her content down - she had a great set of videos on shadow work and integration that was hoping to take a look at.
Is it the Visconti decks with the trees for towers?
The deck I'm showing and talking about in the video is the Trionfi della Luna paradoxical. Kelly-Ann Maddox is the queen of shadow work (including Work, so the new term, it's great) on CZcams ;) Sure Natalia will make more in the future
@@AstralLadyTarot I have a number of decks from Patrick including this one, they are gorgeous. I will look up Kelly-Anne too. Thank you
Great video Anna -such an interesting topic 😊 Xxx
Thanks Emily, there are more videos up on my channel about this, but most of all check what Mary-Grace was saying in the link underneath :)
@@AstralLadyTarot absolutely Mary-Grace's videos were really thought provoking - for me when I use the term I do feel it is digging deeper into a shadow I'm already aware of - technically no longer a shadow - and as you mentioned it's work to reintegrate that 'shadow' that is most likely happening when I work with the tarot. I do feel like whatever it is I'm doing it has been really healing and supportive work for myself. I do hope more people make VRs too - I may make one also on my new second channel (this one is more about lifestyle) but I recently started a new one called Emily's Tarot Magick so I'm working on editing some VRs to upload soon at the moment. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts 💓 😊
@@Ejcfarley Lovely, I will check it out. I feel the same: whatever I choose to call what I'm doing, it's working
@@AstralLadyTarot 💓 😊
I find the best decks for this type of work are those that talk to me most directly. These can be dark in colour or bright and colourful - we are bringing these things into the light after all so a bright or white deck makes as much sense as a dark one. I just need a deck with a clear and direct voice - one that will call me out and not allow me to interpret them in a wishy-washy way or make it easy to hide from the truth.
Yes I totally get that, haha. Thanks so much for sharing and adding this important point!
Geweldige video met een interessant onderwerp.
Vind jouw kijk hier op geweldig. 🙏🏻
Dankje Dorien
Nice videos, but the amount of advertisements is terrible. Cant watch it
I didn't know I had on more than only at the beginning?
Wow I am actually grateful that you've brought this to my attention, because it was definitely not my intention to have this many ads all over the place. I can imagine it's not so nice to watch this way. I am discovering now, going through my videos, that many of them have this mistake and I'm a little shocked! I'm making sure now to change this so everyone can enjoy my videos the way they were intended.
