- What does the storied city of San Francisco look like in 2259? How does it function? Who lives there? All good questions -- these are exactly the questions that ILM VFX supervisor Roger Guyett, Co-VFX supervisor Patrick Tubach, VFX art director Yanick Dusseault, digital environments supervisor Barry Williams and model supervisor Bruce Holcomb had to answer to create a version of the city by the Bay that satisfied director J.J. Abram's vision for the film.

2GB for the model alone, means that it's 2GB without textures and bump maps. just the poly mesh- that's freaking HUGE. i bet the Textures would be terabytes.
i am INSANELY thankful they made a youtube channel :)
Oh look! A feature that should've been included on my super-expensive Blu-ray, which was strangely absent of such things.
That's because they want you to buy the Special Edition too. Fair? Nope!
Whenever I watch a movie more than once I can kinda tell what is real and what is digital, but with this movie it was hard to do that!! Amazing effects for sure! :)
Incredible work, continuing to set the standard! The level of dedication to intricacy and realism is stunning. I was blown away by the craftsmanship when I watched at the cinema.
That's crazy... An amazing amount of work is put into your stunning attention to detail. 2GB just for the model? That's bigger than the file size for the entire movie. These videos are absolutely incredible. Thank you ILM for showing us a look behind your work.
It's crazy to think that for Star Wars you essentially did models and puppets for most of the film and now you're doing this. The evolution of SFX and VFX over the years has been nuts.
Awesome work!
incredible work from everyone involved. I could watch this all day
Incredible! Good job guys and gals...
These videos are so trippy, its cool to see how it all came together.
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing. All those shots of them fighting over the city look EXTREMELY realistic. Impressive work.
Mind-blowing! THANK YOU for uploading these awesome clips!
Excellent work on the detail of the destruction, especially the consideration of how the city would actually work in the future. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome!!
Eccezionale ! Grande ILM !
Incredible amount of work goes into creating these worlds, amazing. Personally believe the crew should get much more attention and pay than they are right now.
Two gigs for the USS Vengeance model alone?
From an "apocryphal memorabilia collector" POV, I have to admit to wanting a travel guide and map for that version of San Francisco as designed for that movie. Merchandising opportunity in that desire. :-)
You guys are so awesome. Keep up delivering magic ;-) and more behind the magic videos.
Awesome work! Future San Francisco has never looked better.
This is the future SF that I mentioned over lunch the other day, *****
Awesome! I can't even fathom processing all the sims.
Great stuff with Star Trek Into Darkness! I enjoyed it more than Pacific Rim. Congratulations for both nominations! Very eagerly looking forward to Transformers Age of Extinction
Awards winning quality.
Very VFX wise
well done guys!!!
You guys rock...excellent work!
gotta love those videos!
Well done! I would love to take a tour of ILM and meet some of you all. Thank you for the cool effects.
Really professional. Bravo! :)
Amazing!
You are really on a roll right now with all those breakdown videos haha.
But I'm curious, which department makes them? The places I was at the VFX editors did them.
If some of the models without paint is almost 2 GB then how many TB is the entire movie? :)
Very good :)
Once again, you guys prove how fuckin awesome you guys are
great job!
damn!, thats looks like a lot of work!.
That's how to rack up an FX tab right there ! As good as it gets.
Good visual
The chase sequence was amazing, I wanted to pause the movie just the admire the environment.
Awesome!!i would love to work in there!, and im making my way to it!, any tips?
Damn, how big is the team at ILM for a film like this? I mean, deadlines gotta be insanely stressfull
Why arent those models made public? It'll be amazing to see what other people would do with them :O
How large is the largest scene that you guys have put "screen magic" onto? (File Size)
Insane. I'm pretty sure you guys actually live in the Star Trek universe so this was easier than it looks.
Geniuses.
How do you guys match the 3D renders with the 3D in Nuke? Also, do you use 3D Equalizer for matchmoving?
Can you tell me here i can learn to do that ? I really love VFX and i want to know how vfx works cuse i whant to make vfx my future job
Why isn't this on my Into Darkness DVD?
you guys are just insane.
One thing I will never understand, is how they input a 3D object, have an actor run around, and the camera pan. I remember back in the day, people used greenscreen from top to bottom of the screen and the camera always has to be pointed at the greenscreen, but how the heck do the 3D models know when the camera is moved to a different direction?
Motion Control
After Effects
Talent
Wait, only two GB's for the model of the Vengeance? That's not that much at all. I thought it would be TB's or more. How do you cram all that data into something small without it going, well, ka-boom?
Are this videos for the oscars??
Uh oh, Better get Maaco!
As cool as this is I still take my hat off to the creators of Star Wars! :)
0:54 "We wanted to give the city a real personality. right before we completely and utterly destroyed it and all of it's inhabitants.
2GB? i imagined that you operate with petabytes...
these clips make me want to study vfx, shame there is no way for ukrainian to do that
2gb one building! hahah my computer crash in the moment!!!!!
Tk
the amount of people that prob died is just......jesus anyone else wonder that
