  • My freshly resealed valve covers quickly developed leaks again on my E34 540i's M60b40 so lets fix these leaks for good using a few new tactics. Applies to M60 and M62 as well.

    That washer trick is exactly what I think mine is missing

    Yup, the rtv on the half moons are so very important!! I had some paint flaking on my valve covers on my M50 also.
    Wonder if the BMW folks ever thought about not painting the underside of the valve covers to give a proper mating surface to prevent oil leaks??!! You truly have a lot of tenacity and patience to stick with it. Good to hear you’re feeling better!! Happy holidays!!

      Thank you George! Not sure why the hell they found it necessary to paint underneath the covers but oh well🤣

    If these are like the m62 valve covers they're magnesium and pit out insane. I just said f it and rtv'd the vc where the gasket sits, bought new rubber bushings and torque to spec...no leaks. I learned my lesson from over torquing the vc and had to a time cert on one of the front holes on the head.

    If you have never had anything vapour blasted before, you'll definitely be impressed. Had my m60 valve covers done a couple years ago then sprayed them wrinkle black.

    The covers warp. I tried everything like 4 times and it ended up being the covers were warped. Both of them

    Great videos, keep keeping on. Quick question you mention you had a few 525, what would you recommend for manual transmission fluid?

      Zf AND Getrag trans use ATF. Redline d4 is the good stuff

      @@m3nameisjosh464 260 Getrag, I usually use redline MTL which works, but wanted to try something different

      @@sidneymoss2712 ohhh m20 car, as far as I remember, g260s call for 3 different fluids depending on the sticker, i used redline mtl in mine.

    What washers did you use? I’m about to do this for mine. Also have you thought about the m60b40 PCV delete and adding an oil catch can?

    • @m3nameisjosh464
      @m3nameisjosh464  Před 2 lety

      I think 5/8 washers. Can’t remember. But 540s sold so no thought on cstch can

    What was your idle problem like? I just did my valve covers recently and now my idle has a mind of its own. it can go anywhere in between 2k rpm to like 700. I have the same engine btw

    • @m3nameisjosh464
      @m3nameisjosh464  Před 2 lety

      It wasn’t like that. Just dipped from normal idle lower

    they dont stop leaking if theyre not new or newish; at this point most m60bX valve covers are warped to hell. I just redid mine by the book and they certainly seem to be sealed a bit better but its only been about 400 miles since, and I can smell oil burning off the block every once in a while still. The real solution is to get new ones... someday I want to see if I can scan a brand new set and mill them out of aluminum. It'd be an ordeal but they might outlast the factory magnesium units in terms of pitting and warping... or maybe not... we'll see.

      Yeah this makes sense. M5xs do this often, and these are the same.
