  • Promotional video for early Pinzgauer vehicles - models "710" (4x4) and "712" (6x6). Includes rare RDTE, proving ground and production line footage.
Pinzgauer was designed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch's chief engineer Erich Ledwinka and originally manufactured at SDP's plant in Graz-Thondorf, Austria. It was a robust, yet lightweight and agile off-road vehicle, intended for tough military use. Production began in the early 1970's. No-compromise design and smart choice of technical features (e.g. air-cooled petrol engine, tubular chassis, independent suspension, portal axles, differential locks, etc.) made it especially suitable for use in harsh alpine conditions.
Even today, forty odd years later, some well preserved examples of this expensive and unusual vehicle still remain in military service, or are being taken off-road by private owners. This is a testimony to Pinzgauer's durablility and advanced design.

In the 70's even military car commercials had funky music going on ;-)
    I miss it!

Back when things were still built properly. I would take this over most vehicles today. Awesome!!!

Great video, thanks for sharing.. I find it extremely remarkable that this drive train is not used in all passenger 4x4's today.

This video is a real treasure. The Pinzgauer is one of the greatest off road vehicles ever made. On the road it is not that good, but the Pinzgauers natural habitat is nature.

Ahh, I've seen 15 or so Pinz 710M's and K's this morning in my old neighborhood. Army units were rehearsing for a parade, and drove them in a single-file defilee amongst the Puch G (461) and new LR Defender 110's. It was warm and sunny day, people cheering and taking photos. Those magnificent vehicles are still in use with Serbian Army, what a sight...

True, Pinzgauer was used in JNA (alongside with Puch G - another great Austrian product). Some examples remained in use with today's Serbian Army, to be true most of those are poorly maintained and there's no real replacement for them since domestic light 4x4 project (Tara) was abandoned.
Funny thing about J.B. Tito, I didn't know about that. Mysterious and elusive man, indeed:)
