Brutal EXECUTION of Wilhelm Canaris - NAZI Admiral & Chief of the Abwehr who Turned against HITLER

- Wilhelm Canaris was born on the 1st of January 1887 in German Aplerbeck, today a borough of the city of Dortmund. Wilhelm was the youngest of four children of a wealthy industrialist family and together with his siblings he grew up in a villa with a park, nursery and tennis court. Young Wilhelm had housemaids from England and was taken to school in a carriage. In school he was described as a quiet, shy, reserved and introverted student.
From an early age, Canaris aspired to be an officer in the Imperial Navy, but his father encouraged him to join the Imperial Army. However, after his father died of stroke in September 1904 Canaris applied for a place in the Imperial navy and by the outbreak of the First World War, which began on 28 July 1914, he held a position as a naval intelligence officer on board the light cruiser Dresden.

Canaris fed the Allies accurate information for years, but it was never trusted. Had it been so, it could have saved countless lives and probably shortened the war. He actually supplied the date of Operation Barbarossa, together with troop dispositions and objectives. Stalin was told by British Intelligence and decided that it was a British trick. Canaris deserves some sort of medal or greater recognition for what he tried to do. I have been to Plötzensee prison and seen the meat hooks. A truly horrifying and sobering place.
He also advised Franco not to join the war.
The “War machine “ was in full swing.Big money was at play.
Spain never would join war no interest
Like it or not...he was a traitor.
@@Eric-kn4ynThere were some forays, Germany would have welcomed Spain as an ally.
Canaris was from a bygone age when senior military intelligence saw no merit in dictatorships and considered genocide as ungentlemanly. As far as he was concerned Hitler had no honor and recognized him as a megalomaniac driven by a heady concoction of power and drugs. Canaris’ bravery at the end is a sad irony that he didn’t see out the war and retire into old age as a veteran and perhaps elder statesman.
Well the German army felt nostalgic about Kaiser and did not like the Weimar democracy that much. They tolerated the Weimar republic, but they held no love for it. And they stayed loyal to Hitler as long as he could give them military toys, parades, and conquests. And they did also see some need for harsh measures against the Communists. And in world war 1 had the German army used Belgians as slave labor, and stolen food from eastern Europe and the idea of plundering the east and letting millions of slavs starve to death was born. Hitler picked up on the idea for his war in the east.
And the results was of course disasterous with the worst genocide in history.
It is not so bygone. In the US several Generals stopped Adolf Trump during his Bierhal Putsch at Jan 6th and the days after.
He recognized correctly. The Americans and the illuminati basically funded Hitler. Prescot bush father of George bush snr ex president was heavily involved. The only reason America went to war with Germany was because Hitler double crossed them he started to believe his own hype. It had nothing to do with honour. England had to almost beg for support from isolationist America it was only when it became clear that Hitler wasn't going to carry out the agenda of the rothachilds and was forming an axis with Japan and Intent on invading Russia thst America got involved even in sending arms. They provoked Japan. Japan fell into the trap the rest is history.
ALSO your vids are click bait. I came for the execution details that you promised it's one minute of the video the rest is mostly stuff we already know except with some details of nobodies

Himmler was such a worm.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, pastor/theologian, was executed at the same time as Canaris. There were many tears shed for the Pastor.
Letters from Prison.
While in prison, courtesy of the nazi regime,he had the idea of a theory of stupidity.
Thank you World History for another enlightening episode. There may have been tears for Wilhelm Canaris, rightfully so. What a terrible way to be murdered: naked and on a meat hook writhing. Humans are barbaric.
I appreciate your narrator, unique and distinctive voice.
👋 from California.
Thank you
What a tragic, hidious, and cruel time. I bow my head in prayer for those who were victims of Nazi barbarism. May they never be forgotten.
A positive thing to say about Communist Stalin and Russia is they held German and Japanese POWs as SLAVE LABOR until 1956. Russia only released the German and Japanese POWs because of international pressure. I think Russia entered the war against Japan on August 9, 3 days after US dropped the second atomic bomb on Japan.
@@johnm249 You think having POW's in cruel labor camps and gulags like Kolyma (and almost certain death) even after the war ended in a "positive thing"? Yikes!!
By the way, Russia did not exist between 1922 and 1991, it was the atheistic Soviet Union during those years. Orthodox Christian Russia would never have allowed their own people to get slaughtered by the millions at the hands of Jewish maniacs.
Wilhelm Canaris was a complicated individual. For example although he was a perpetrator of the Holocaust due to him being partially responsible for the use of the Star of David to identify Jews which later resulted in them being easily identified and then subsequently killed in the Holocaust he later turned against Hitler and was genuinely horrified at the acts of violence and mass murder that the Einsgruptin committed against Jewish people and other civilians and protested and objected against it and he even saved the life’s of hundreds of Jewish people by helping them get out of harms way. He of course wasn’t a complete hero like Oskar Schindler as although Schindler himself was also a complicated man unlike Wilhelm Oskar Schindler was not anti semtic and he also did not take part in the Holocaust.
Schindler was a member of the nazi party and he came to Poland because he wanted to get rich from using cheap slave labor. But there he saw brutality, murder, cruelty and massive amounts of suffering. Not just against men but also women and children. He did then probably get a change of heart, because deep inside he was a good person. And nazi Germany had shown its true face to him. So he decided to act like a hero instead of a war profiteer.
So I can see much paralells to Canaris story here.
You can't really be this stupid, can you?
Never get close to evil ................
I would love you WH, to tell the story of Heinz Siegfried Heydrich (1905 - 1944) the anti-nazi younger brother of the man with the iron heart, Reinhard Heydrich.
He died penniless but buried in the family tomb.
Wow, you made me despise Hitler even more than I already did. I didn't even think that was possible.
Hitler got a kick out of watching films of the executions of the July 20 plotters as they kicked.
I don't think its fair to call him "Nazi Admiral" when he spent so much of his life fighting against the Nazis. Especially in capital letters. And died for that anti Nazi cause.
Yeah I noticed that too - kind of a slap in the face to someone who spent much of his time from the mid thirties tying to undermine Nazi efforts at every turn.
Canaris was a prisoner in Flossenb🎉urg Concentration Camp. They would not have had piano wire like Berlin. A wooden beam with nooses was put up for hanging. Canaris was likely hanged with a simple noose, together with others by upending a bench. The camp had a crematory oven
He was hanged with rope, as far as I know, from the same gallows which on that morning was also used to hang Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
Executed a few weeks before end of the war. Poor man
Even if he was spared till the end of the war, he was a broken man, much like Field Marshall von Rundstedt.
Thought I knew everything about WW2 including canaris and his espionage but was unaware he was also a victim of nazis. Thx. 🙏 RIP sir.
He met the head of MI6 in Paris two weeks before the invasion in 1944. What was discussed has never been made public.
The Fascist leader of Spain was a Wise man indeed. He knew Hitler was Insane and would Fail in the end, And he knew full well if he had Joined the Axis he would get the Rope too. So he stayed well clear and Stayed in Power until the Late 1970s.
And so did his little neighbour Salazar in Portugal...
The politically adroit Franco was also a monster. In the Spanish civil war he allowed the appalling practice of double rape against captured Socialist women. The vile offenders were North African troops. As an earlier junior commander he was aware of their tendencies.

Three lousy weeks before Hitler's suicide...
Hitler was murdering his percieved enemies until the moment of his death.
I honestly wondered if this video would end with "There were many tears shed"...
A theme they seem to have with the July plotters is letting the viewers decide whether tears were shed.
I’d personally say that there were many tears shed for Wilhelm Canaris as although he was partially responsible for the Holocaust at least he did genuinely oppose the acts of violence and mass murder that were committed by the Nazis against civilians and did protest against it and did eventually turn against Hitler and attempted to overthrow him and did also save hundreds of Jewish people from the Nazis. Although it still doesn’t excuse Wilhelm for his complicity in the Holocaust at least he did eventually do something genuinely good.
Sometimes we let you - our viewers - decide ... what is your opinion?
@@WorldHistoryVideos I already expressed my own opinion on Canaris but thanks for asking.
@@WorldHistoryVideos I think some tears were shed because Operation: Valkyrie failed. However Canaris knew what he signed up for and what would happen when it ultimatley failed.
Once again, he leaves it up to you to determine if “tears were shed” or not.
Thank you for releasing all of these interesting and very important videos. Very educational and very important to NEVER forget histories atrocities.
I have always respected Admiral Canaris. His exploits in South America during WW I made for interesting reading. He was a very intelligent, capable man highly skilled in intelligence work and analysis. He was one of the few people to manipulate Hitler regarding his handling of Franco during Hitler’s plans for Gibraltar. He ensured Hitler would be deny access through Spain.
That was a cruel, evil death for a man like Canaris but I understand he never lost his dignity at the end. 19:02
Do you also have a video about Erwin Lahousen? He was the prosecution's key witness in the Nuremberg war crimes trial and also a member of the group around Canaris and Oster. Without his statements, convicting the defendants would have been more difficult.
A complex emotional issue, Canaris was the Jekyl and Hyde of Nazi Germany.
I applaud your option to say nothing at the end, as I feel we will all reach that same conclusion.
Admiral Canaris wasn't a clean man.. One other example : the Abwehr in France under his command captured and tortured members of the french Résistance.
Nazi germany was a jeckel and hyde nation
If you want to do a deep dive into Canaris, and what info he was giving the allies, the book “Bodyguard Of Lies”, lays it out, very well, and also the cat and mouse he was playing with those in Hitler’s command, who suspected him of doing just what he WAS, actually doing..
Definitely two sides to this man. While he initially took Heydrich under his wing he recognized his ruthless persona and did distance himself from him. He also recognized Hitler’s megalomania and did what he could to undermine him. He was most definitely antisemitic (as were a lot of Germans) and may or may not have endorsed their slaughter. I can certainly understand his honest belief that he only acted in what he viewed as the best interests of his country. Very interesting look into a very complicated man.
I'm curious if you ever have uttered a similar phrase in a post about one of the many influential Jewish NKVD officers and gulag commanders in the Soviet Union? Something along the lines of :
He was most definitely anti-Christian (as were a lot of Jews) and may or may not have endorsed the slaughter of millions of Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox Christians.
most Americans and TBH, most of Europe was just as anti-semitic. It wasnt an exclusive German thing.
@@aristideau5072 Thats a detail which a lot of people in Eastern Europe want to sweep under the carpet...
A very interesting biography! Thank you once again...amazing level of detail.
Wauv, this is actually the first time, I hear about Canaris.

Well I wouldn't say he hated the entire nazi system. He was onboard at the beginning even suggested the star of David badge. He only got an attack of conscience when he saw the ultimate result of the ideology.
Thank you,extremely interesting....
Have you seen the numbers AGAIN.
Why was nothing said about tears shed for this man like in other videos?
So brave - so sad.
Canaris almost cwrtaily worked hand and hand through messages and couriers with both MI6 and the OSS.
He must bear the shame of having supported the rise of nazism. But i think his actions later certainly mitigated that crime.
Imagine being in his shoes , during those times .
Knowing full well that it wasn't going to end up good for Germany .
Heading inevitably in his mind , towards chaos and defeat .
Everyday a living nightmare so to speak .
Okay in my view he wasn't a saint , but he also wasn't a sinner to some degree .
He was just a German citizen , trying to fight for his country , in the only way he knew how .
Does he deserve our respect for doing that ....
I think so , having watched this video .
Erstklassiger Kerl, dieser Canaris. 👍

Perhaps it depends on personal wiews whether you believe Canaris deserves ones tears,His role in any previous conspiracies apart from July20 is inevitably shourded in mystery but he brought about his own demise he lived on the edge and fell from the cliff,
Hi thank you.

What is the background music?
Jews need to share a tears 4 canaries, who saved lives.
Sounds like there were some tears shed for Canaris. Interestingly Oscar Schindler was a member of Abwehr prior to his moving to Cracow in Poland and setting up his enamel works factory there.
And nothing of value was lost...
What a tragic history of the German nation.
Wasnt Canaris an officer on the Emden during ww1, and who led his man back to Germany from the Indian ocean?.
It’s amazing that Canaris who started off seemingly like any other Anti Semite ended up a real hero and paid the ultimate price. May God rest his soul and well done Mr Canaris you have my respect and great surname because I’m from Norwich and we are the Canaris 🐤
Canaria hitched his wagon to Hitler’s star. Realized to late that it was a mistake.
Of all people, Canaris should have known not to keep a diary. He did. It was found. You know the rest.
This could be a movie script. Well told. I red a book about this guy
Thank you. See more of our videos. The quality is the same, meaning always high. Greetings.
How many crimes committed in the name of revenge?
Excellent video. I didn't know that Canaris proposed the star of David to single out the Jews.
Canaris was a devote cathelic. I guess he belonged to the pre war (still existent to this day) group within catholisism that hold the Jews responsible for the crusfixion of Jezus.
When he saw with his own eyes what this error in reasoning had brought about he risked his life to save Jews.
Had Canaris with his good ties with old school catholic Franco not succesfully convinced Franco to stay out of the war then the fall of Gilbraltar would have possibly and even probably led to Brittain losing the Suez canal and all presence in the Med.
That in turn could have led to Hitler grabbing the oil fields in Bakoe. Thus also winning Barbarossa.
The inpact of Canaris was enormous. 19:30
Pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that all fell into place in the end .
It makes you wonder , perhaps there really is a God .
Dies his diary still exist?

Piano wire is more unpleasant, why?
You missed out that the two guards both ss, that had beaten and ridiculed him, then hung him, were both arrested after the war.

But that... Is another story.......
Doing it for a flag is not heroic.
There is conflicting evidence about this, he was photographed with his two dogs, Not the German Shepherds, but Dachshunds in the mid 60's
How many tears shed?
His actions to prevent Spain from cooperating with Germany on Gibraltar were devastating and led to Germany's defeat. The Royal and US Navies got into the Mediterranean because of him, and the advance of the Allies in North Africa and up into Italy. From the Reich's point of view, he was an extremely heinous traitor. Three million German soldiers and 13 million German civilians died, 500,.000 of them at Dresden.

I have always reserved personal judgement concerning Canaris, primarily due to a perceived lack of reliable information in regard to his views and actions throughout his life. I sense so much about him remains speculative and supposition, the suspicion being his performance impressed Hitler enough for Canaris to remain in power as long as he did. Interventions on behalf of certain individuals could conceivably ameriolate a
NY paticular harsh assessment s but do little to alter my overall opinions.

Stop using the term "Nazi" as synonomous with "German".
hitlerland?
Guilty ? Sorry my German friend! Most of Germany followed Hitler during 36_ 39.
No matter the circumstances, telling lies is always an evil thing to do, and conspiracies, plots and treason usually involve quite a bit of them. "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour" (Exodus 20:16.)
In 1932-1933 the USSR murdered 15,000,000+ million innocent people. This is who the Germans wanted to fight. Germany had no wish to fight anyone but the USSR. Germany offered Poland an alliance and wanted to negotiate the return of German land and the Danzig German people. Britain and France declared war on Germany after persuading Poland not to negotiate with Germany. Then the genocidal USSR became an ally of America and Britain.
The perpetrator is the victim now? My dad was in Russia. He volunteered. After 3 days on the front, he realised they've been duped. He never understood why the Russians let Germans live after what they've done there. Hitler didnt care about Russians lifes, nor did Stalin. Both were murderers. They cared only for themselves....
15 million?

So Germany would right that wrong themselves, by murdering millions of innocent people.

Yet Germany had declared war on the United States first. So what's the point your making here? It's what allies do.
