  • Wilhelm Canaris was born on the 1st of January 1887 in German Aplerbeck, today a borough of the city of Dortmund. Wilhelm was the youngest of four children of a wealthy industrialist family and together with his siblings he grew up in a villa with a park, nursery and tennis court. Young Wilhelm had housemaids from England and was taken to school in a carriage. In school he was described as a quiet, shy, reserved and introverted student.
From an early age, Canaris aspired to be an officer in the Imperial Navy, but his father encouraged him to join the Imperial Army. However, after his father died of stroke in September 1904 Canaris applied for a place in the Imperial navy and by the outbreak of the First World War, which began on 28 July 1914, he held a position as a naval intelligence officer on board the light cruiser Dresden.

Canaris fed the Allies accurate information for years, but it was never trusted. Had it been so, it could have saved countless lives and probably shortened the war. He actually supplied the date of Operation Barbarossa, together with troop dispositions and objectives. Stalin was told by British Intelligence and decided that it was a British trick. Canaris deserves some sort of medal or greater recognition for what he tried to do. I have been to Plötzensee prison and seen the meat hooks. A truly horrifying and sobering place.

Canaris was from a bygone age when senior military intelligence saw no merit in dictatorships and considered genocide as ungentlemanly. As far as he was concerned Hitler had no honor and recognized him as a megalomaniac driven by a heady concoction of power and drugs. Canaris’ bravery at the end is a sad irony that he didn’t see out the war and retire into old age as a veteran and perhaps elder statesman.

Well the German army felt nostalgic about Kaiser and did not like the Weimar democracy that much. They tolerated the Weimar republic, but they held no love for it. And they stayed loyal to Hitler as long as he could give them military toys, parades, and conquests. And they did also see some need for harsh measures against the Communists. And in world war 1 had the German army used Belgians as slave labor, and stolen food from eastern Europe and the idea of plundering the east and letting millions of slavs starve to death was born. Hitler picked up on the idea for his war in the east.
And the results was of course disasterous with the worst genocide in history.

He recognized correctly. The Americans and the illuminati basically funded Hitler. Prescot bush father of George bush snr ex president was heavily involved. The only reason America went to war with Germany was because Hitler double crossed them he started to believe his own hype. It had nothing to do with honour. England had to almost beg for support from isolationist America it was only when it became clear that Hitler wasn't going to carry out the agenda of the rothachilds and was forming an axis with Japan and Intent on invading Russia thst America got involved even in sending arms. They provoked Japan. Japan fell into the trap the rest is history.

A positive thing to say about Communist Stalin and Russia is they held German and Japanese POWs as SLAVE LABOR until 1956. Russia only released the German and Japanese POWs because of international pressure. I think Russia entered the war against Japan on August 9, 3 days after US dropped the second atomic bomb on Japan.

Wilhelm Canaris was a complicated individual. For example although he was a perpetrator of the Holocaust due to him being partially responsible for the use of the Star of David to identify Jews which later resulted in them being easily identified and then subsequently killed in the Holocaust he later turned against Hitler and was genuinely horrified at the acts of violence and mass murder that the Einsgruptin committed against Jewish people and other civilians and protested and objected against it and he even saved the life’s of hundreds of Jewish people by helping them get out of harms way. He of course wasn’t a complete hero like Oskar Schindler as although Schindler himself was also a complicated man unlike Wilhelm Oskar Schindler was not anti semtic and he also did not take part in the Holocaust.

    • @nattygsbord
      @nattygsbord Před 4 měsíci

Schindler was a member of the nazi party and he came to Poland because he wanted to get rich from using cheap slave labor. But there he saw brutality, murder, cruelty and massive amounts of suffering. Not just against men but also women and children. He did then probably get a change of heart, because deep inside he was a good person. And nazi Germany had shown its true face to him. So he decided to act like a hero instead of a war profiteer.
So I can see much paralells to Canaris story here.

Although it still doesn’t excuse Wilhelm for his complicity in the Holocaust at least he did eventually do something genuinely good.

He also recognized Hitler’s megalomania and did what he could to undermine him. He was most definitely antisemitic (as were a lot of Germans) and may or may not have endorsed their slaughter. Excellent video. I didn't know that Canaris proposed the star of David to single out the Jews.
Canaris was a devote cathelic. I guess he belonged to the pre war (still existent to this day) group within catholisism that hold the Jews responsible for the crusfixion of Jezus.
When he saw with his own eyes what this error in reasoning had brought about he risked his life to save Jews.
Had Canaris with his good ties with old school catholic Franco not succesfully convinced Franco to stay out of the war then the fall of Gilbraltar would have possibly and even probably led to Brittain losing the Suez canal and all presence in the Med.
That in turn could have led to Hitler grabbing the oil fields in Bakoe. Thus also winning Barbarossa.

His actions to prevent Spain from cooperating with Germany on Gibraltar were devastating and led to Germany's defeat. The Royal and US Navies got into the Mediterranean because of him, and the advance of the Allies in North Africa and up into Italy. From the Reich's point of view, he was an extremely heinous traitor. Three million German soldiers and 13 million German civilians died, 500,.000 of them at Dresden.

I have always reserved personal judgement concerning Canaris, primarily due to a perceived lack of reliable information in regard to his views and actions throughout his life. I sense so much about him remains speculative and supposition, the suspicion being his performance impressed Hitler enough for Canaris to remain in power as long as he did. Interventions on behalf of certain individuals could conceivably ameriolate a
NY paticular harsh assessment s but do little to alter my overall opinions.

In 1932-1933 the USSR murdered 15,000,000+ million innocent people. This is who the Germans wanted to fight. Germany had no wish to fight anyone but the USSR. Germany offered Poland an alliance and wanted to negotiate the return of German land and the Danzig German people. Britain and France declared war on Germany after persuading Poland not to negotiate with Germany. Then the genocidal USSR became an ally of America and Britain.

The perpetrator is the victim now? My dad was in Russia. He volunteered. After 3 days on the front, he realised they've been duped. He never understood why the Russians let Germans live after what they've done there. Hitler didnt care about Russians lifes, nor did Stalin. Both were murderers. They cared only for themselves....

Yet Germany had declared war on the United States first. So what's the point your making here? It's what allies do. When Germany attack Poland, Hitler should have expected no less of Britain and France to declare war on Germany. Sure he gambled that they wouldn't but nonetheless he lost that gamble like many more that was to come during that war.
