Celia, the Queen! Thanks for the react. This song went hard in the club! When you brought up the reggae salsa fusion it reminded me of Carlos de Nicaragua y familia. Their song Sensemaya is my jam! It fuses a little bit of everything. The Cuban jazz band Cubanismo also remade the Bob Marley classic Get Up, Stand up back in the day.

This song, Chan Chan, was originally written in the 80s by one of the members of the group; the song was re-recorded for the Buena Vista album with new arrangements and ensemble. Hi Jack! Great reaction! I too was shocked at that part of the video originally and have always been conflicted thinking "why did they have to go that far?" The song is about a black woman who walks with self love and pride (tumbao =swagger) down the street (could be interpreted as life). I think at that point of the video, they push that idea to it's extreme. To me it's not only is she proud to be black but also proud to be a woman regardless of colour (hence the gold paint). Still, I think maybe they could've gone about it a different way as not everyone will put much thought into it. It can come across as objectifying the model and lose the point. I have always loved this song though. It's rhythm was brilliant at a time when I hadn't heard of Regatton (90s). For salsa songs can I recommend Llorarás by Oscar de León and El Dia de Mi Muerte by Héctor Lavoe (however you must read the lyrics in English at the same time with this one as the lyrics are like a story). Thanks 😊
