2021 Nissan Rogue First Drive Review

  • Nissan's all-new Rogue doubles down on safety features, a roomy interior, standard gadgets, and a lower price point than the primary competition. The bolder exterior is a welcome change, but the real win is the Rogue's new interior which is among the best in the segment. If you're looking for a roomy, family friendly option and you don't mind giving up performance to get a good deal, this is the right CUV for you.

Thanks for all the details! Can't wait to test drive this. I am planning to downsize from my 13 year-old minivan. The surround view camera, all the storage options in the cabin and the configurable cargo space are all huge pluses in my book. I really want something that is fuel efficient so I am willing to forego some acceleration speed. The backseat looks spacious enough for my teenager as compared to the RAV4, which does not. I really love the storage space underneath the cup holders too.

Got the new rav4. Now that I'm a parent it feels like Nissan did the most thorough focus group with parents and what they want. Wider door openings, less intrusive steering wheel, sun shades (my fav), that little bit more room front passenger with car seat, back door sensors, tiered cargo area... All sounds very tempting.

Great review, I love Nissan/Infiniti and I really hope they come out of this slump better than ever, the fact they're still doing combination leds when full leds should be standard on all of their cars by now, there's no excuse at this point and the Altima is another example of this... And Infiniti which if done right can go back to being a real contender in the luxury segment in which once upon a time they were quite the competitor but as of now they're dragging their feet which they have no room for at this point.. And did I mention I love your new intro chime, no lie it sounds like it should be in a luxury car as the startup chime... 👏🏾👌🏾👏🏾✊🏾

I own the 2017 rogue SV and the main reasons I picked it was it’s extra interior room, the wide 90 degree rear door openings, the extra features at the mid level trim like gps , premium audio, pano roof, and tri-zone climate. Glad to see Nissan keeping the SV trim packed with higher end goodies. Gripes I’ve had with mine is it’s pickup speed, droney cvt, dated infotainment, and small item storage isn’t great. Great review as usual. The big question for anyone even considering a Rogue is have they addressed the CVT issues? We know 2 owners that had catastrophic transmission failures - one at 60k and the other at 90k. Having to spend $4k-$5k to replace a transmission at that mileage is insane. So, is the CVT also 'all new' and of a more robust design? The other issue is the 9.2 sec. 0-60. Add the weight of passengers, luggage, a full tank of gas and AWD and I wouldn't be surprised is we are knocking on the door of 11 sec. If you are trying to merge onto a highway with people doing 70+ and you are starting from a standstill....well, you get the point. Those are 2 glaring deficiencies that would keep me from putting this on my shopping list. Too bad, it seems like a pretty good choice otherwise.

Handsome inside and out, spacious, feature-laden, economical. A snooze to drive, yes, it could really use the 2.0 turbo, but then Nissan won't be able to point you towards the QX50. And since Rogues sell like hotcakes there's not much incentive to give it more power. @@Wasabi9111 I feel like you can't go wrong with any of them, it's just up to preference. I personally lean more towards Honda if I had to pick between the three. I can't really get over the borderline bad CVTs and anemic performance in Nissan products. But I do like Nissan's seats and pro pilot assist better than the Honda line of products. Great choice either way!

Evan Condron I agreed. I convinced 3 relatives to get the 2017 crv ex. Back then it was hard to find a car for ~$26k with all the safety features and for the price, you cant beat it for the safety, practicality and reliability. I only wish this segment was more refined. Even $35k+ versions of this segment drive like an economy car.

I’d stay away from the crv. Oil dilution, transmission problems and ac compressor failures.

Q J fingers crossed! So far so good for all 3 of my relatives crv. I hope they’re reliable bc I had to convince my MIL to replace her ultra reliable 2004 rav4 for a safer 2017 crv. She didn’t want to get rid of her 2004 rav4, but it didn’t have any of the safety features that she needed.

This one reminds me of the body of the Nissan X-Trail of the early 2000s, (except that the lines are softer, rather than angular)... I think that's how the Rouge is badged outside the U.S.?

It would be cool to see this front end on the pathfinder. Plus, I'm sure it won't hurt to put a six speed automatic transmission in this, at least. Nissan's CVTs are one of the worst (if not the worst) in the industry when it comes to reliability.

Great looking CUV! Shame they didn’t significantly improve the powertrain. If it was in the 7.5-8 sec range, I’d definitely consider it over a CRV. I like the power of the CRV, but I’m not a fan of the minivan looks of it.

imagine if these mainstream nissan products just threw a ZF transmission in them, instead of these universally-panned CVTs. Save yourselves, please Nissan! We remember the days of the manual Maxima and the Sentra SE-R! You shook the automotive world with the (now ancient) 370z and the GT-R in 2009; you clearly have so much engineering talent. Don't let the penny-pinchers ruin the brand!

    • @Mo.Jo.
      @Mo.Jo. Před 3 lety +2

I've had both the SE-R manual and the 2009 SE-R with a CVT - they were both great vehicles and the CVT was fine on my 2009 Sentra SE-R (which i consider to be a miracle) - but i wouldnt get one now from nissan. They've had too many business issues that i'm afraid may have trickled down and impacted their production and quality. Also, not all ZF transmissions are created equal - like the current 2015-2020 TLX v6 that has a really hesitant 9 speed ZF.

How "crappy" can these CVTs be when Nissan sells so many? I have a 2019 Rogue and once you learn how the CVT wants to be pushed, driving the thing is real easy and I average 30.2 mpg in mixed driving. I'll take the price vs. performance over being influenced by "crappy" comments any day. The only thing I wish Nissan WOULD do, is remove the fake shifts. We know it's a CVT - we don't need to be tricked into thinking it's not. It would actually perform even better if they did.

Greg Hilt I have a 2019 Altima Platinum with the VC turbo. previous to this I had a 16 and 14 model year. I live in a hilly area and travel a bit. I always take my cars for service that it required. The max miles i had was the 16 Altima had 107,000 miles when i traded it for the new one. I never had any issues and i agree with you. The CVT had a learning curve with each one and i found i never had to floor them to take off fast. Theres alot of blasting Nissan CVT but i work with people that have worse issues with there cars that arent Nissans. Nissan did have some CVT issues but that was years ago and i dont understand how people post or can compare a new redesign model & cvt to a old one and say its unreliable still? just alot of online b.s from people these days.

With hybrid technology as good as it is now, all of the cars in this segment should just be hybrid standard-for a grocery getter/commuter there’s just nothing better all around. 40mpg is really nice to have. Maybe have a 2.0turbo option for people who want to tow more.
Nice looking interior in this car anyway.

Alex, you have always praise the Rogue for great fuel economy with this generation and the previous Rogue but I own one and didn't get the MPG estimate at all. In winter, I got 22-23MPG and other season just around 26-27 MPG mixed at best.

The selling points of previous nissan were amazing chassis , roomy cabin and price. The negatives were underpowered power train , cabin noise and tin can feeling. I test drove murano recently and it is just a cadilac comfort comparing to my kia sportage, and pretty sure it beats new sorento and santa in this category. Not sure if Rav4 or crv has acoustic glass, but rav must be less roomy. Crv has a lot of cabin noise. I just hope new rouge didnt spoil it with new suspension enhacemnts. And if they improved cabin noise like it is mentioned here , it should be a hit. Though seems like a tin can feeling is still there .
