Removing broken screw from a barrel arbor

  • This mainspring barrel arbor belongs to a Langendorf 1 ladies watch. The diameter of the drill was .50mm. You can see that the center was not perfect, and the drill wobbled a bit. This is bad form, worthy of critique, but the drill was small enough that I did not cut into the threads at all, so it worked out.
    Thanks for watching
The video referenced about making a drill bit.

Brand new to the channel but I think you have fantastic videos. I have always been fascinated by mechanical watches and I'm just starting to learn about, in greater detail, the inner workings of the movement for my own inquisitive purposes.

I'm teaching at a horology school now. Sadly I don't have as much time to do my own work and make videos now. But stay tuned. I have several videos in the works and will ... eventually ... be posted.

What the student should have done is a technique that when you have a screw that will not come out, you turn it the opposite direction, in kind of a back and forth manner, hoping to break it away at the threads, and then removing it. If the student would have done that, they might have discovered that they were turning it the wrong way, when the screw started turning in the direction that they thought was the tightening direction. It might sound counterintuitive, tightening it when it is stuck, but at times it will dislodge it.

Thanks, just removed a broken left handed broken screw in a ELOGA movement arbor, using this technique. Awesome :-)

Is it unusual for a barrel arbor to be threaded that way? Thanks for the video. It is very helpful.

98% of the time it is a right hand threaded screw, so this is isn't a common arrangement.

I wish I had the time and energy. If you hadn't heard, I'm now an instructor at a school of horology. I've only made 2 videos since taking the job. I miss doing the work and making videos.
