TED = Technology, Entertainment, Design. I think this goes under Entertainment.. and somewhat Design.. and somewhat Technology.. So I think this is the perfect place to be on TED.
I've been thinking what the ending line means. I guess i made two possibilities 1. The girl doesn't have to write down the details of their meeting because she remembers it or 2. She rejected him. I really wanted to know the meaning of this story please help. Thnx : ) Very Creative indeed!
I think the overall point of it at the end was to demonstrate really, how un-emotive emoticons are. You cannot illustrate that feeling of rejection through an emoticon. He told the whole story using the text pictures but when it came down to that last line, there is no emoticon in the world that can really express that horrible pit feeling in your stomach of rejection really. That is my take on it anyways.
Oh. My. God. Emotions are feelings you have. These are EMOTICONS which are symbols that make faces or symbols to express EMOTIONS which is why they are called EMOTICONS because they are ICONS.
except people still type like that cuz you only get 140-ish characters to do it in, so even tho you have a full keyboard(-ish), space is still at a premium.
Some of you people here think that you're being sarcastic by saying this is inspiring, but you're missing the point. It's TED. It's about ideas not about inspiring your lazy asses. This fella just illustrated the elaborate vocabulary of the emoticon language; he managed to present to us the state of our society in a creative manner all in 3 mins. Bravo.
I thought it was interesting as a commentary on how the medium defines the story rather than mediums adapting to our notions of stories. It's kind of fun knowing that my imagination is probably manufactured.
Lazerjo2000: "I didnt get the last part where she didnt have to write it down" I'm optimistic in thinking that she can remember the phone number because she's thinking the same about him.
Thank you for explaining; not being a native english speaker I wasn't sure myself, although I had made a fair guess about the happy ending. Anyway if one wasn't that sure about it being a happy ending story, it could also be she's just acting purposefully arrogant and cold-hearted when rejecting the guy (yeah I prefer dramas lol jk)
@jesstern Even though the story doesn't stand up by itself because of some incorrect depictions & he explained so much that wasn't shown in text (but could have been), so even if we understood the depictions, we wouldn't get the story? Maybe I'm just not getting the point, but as interesting as this video could have been, even when letting my imagination go wild, I don't see any point of worth in this video. Do note I just randomly came accross this video and thus know of no context for this.
Who says they are primitive? You? Western conceit? What makes it primitive. I am curious. Each age has a different way to communicate. What makes our current modern arrangement better then another? Please enlighten me
Why fear it? Language has always been changing throughout history, what reason is there for us to fear it now? At one point or another the idea of writing ANYTHING was foreign and unwelcome. Writing and typing like this could simply be the next step to it's evolution or it may not, either there's no reason to really reject it :)
Well it is easy for you. There is the reason why English is the International Language. But it comes with the exception of Chinese language because Chinese is living among of the Earth as Chinese is possible to second International Language. And you suggest we should communicate via writting and typing. Should you go outside more a bit?
worsenature: "Why are we as a society so obsessed with 5998b?" Maybe it's just you projecting your obsession onto the rest or us. What is 5998b? Never heard of it.
The dedication at the end was what did it for me ;) Such a sweet story.
Hahah... That was awesome.
For a minute, though, I thought he was saying "You could put the pencil in your phone." XD

I send this to ladies sometimes, to make their world seem brighter. I think it did make them feel better about themselves.
adorable
@TheSinisterHero how do u do that lol
I think the 4 her at the end means that afterwards he ended up getting the girl because he kept trying. ie the speaker got her in the end
Awwh! That was so cute!
Oh. My. God. Emotions are feelings you have. These are EMOTICONS which are symbols that make faces or symbols to express EMOTIONS which is why they are called EMOTICONS because they are ICONS.
He says oh my god so wierdly
except people still type like that cuz you only get 140-ish characters to do it in, so even tho you have a full keyboard(-ish), space is still at a premium.

By the way what does the last one mean?

she's saying "no thx" merely to the offer of a pencil. She doesn't have to write down his number (coz she'll remember it).
- - -> ]
Emoticons show emotions.

Why was there a 4 over her head?
Good job

Flubbed that last line, it should have been "no thanks". "Thnx" clearly = thanks, not thank you... I'll stop nitpicking...
Emoticons for old people :D
Anyone notice the '4 Q' At the end? ;P
I guess you are right.

What did that morse code say?

Sweet!!!!
face of disapproval >.>
a waltz?
@boorens18 like it was a dedication of some sort?
5998b? oh yeah i remember them, but that was so 4 hours ago.
5998b is kitsch by now's standards.
I can imagine that a 100-200 years people would think that our English is weird. I certainly struggle to understand Shakespeare's writing.
I spelled 'Bridge' wrong. xD
wtf is a cassette tape?
So does he get the girl or not? I'm sooo confused :/
"I don't need to write it down"....I don't get it. What does that even mean?
@pepcozpepcoz he means You Look Like A Mermaid
5998b said "1st on a Ted vid. This will make me famous. " ...or pretty keen to be picked on, says I.
what the?... i'm a full time msn'er but that i can't.
what ratholin sayd

The drugs this guy is on must be powerful hallucinogens...
I don't ... get it.
he uses some animation instead of type-able characters from keyboard...
its emotions not emoticons
Who says they are primitive? You? Western conceit? What makes it primitive. I am curious. Each age has a different way to communicate. What makes our current modern arrangement better then another? Please enlighten me
Hi

HI FAMOUS PERSON!
*cough dork cough*
@DoctorNociceptor I don't think it's funny either, just highly creative and mildly satirical without being harsh.

Pssht...No you didn't!
Don't act all pretentious, the symbols are ambiguous, there's thousands of ways to interpret them.
I*_*I Looks more like a face than a cassette tape lol
