    BTW: I know that all radial lines also remain the exact same with fisheye lenses (centered horizontal and vertical are radial lines), but since true radial lines, other than horizontal and vertical, are of rather little importance in cinematography , I didn't mention them for the sake of clarity. The proportions of the 35mm and 16mm film are 100% correct since they come from flatbed scans, which I took of actual film stock. Hope you find this video helpful.
    P.S. You might be surprised how many very well known movies make extensive and good use of barrel distortion lenses in a subtle way ("Heat", "Pulp Fiction", "Ex Machina", many a film by Kubrick - and Nolan.....). Thanks for checking out my video.

      This is Christian (truefilm), writing from another channel. Yes of course, plugging the hole with tape or putty/glue is a good idea. Anything to avoid moisture. I always have de -humifyer in bags (white pearls) around my lenses to keep them dry. Good luck with your K-3 film projects!

    • @truefilm1556
      @truefilm1556  Před 7 lety

      Absolutely, but wide angle lenses are very hard to come by since the crop factor of the 16mm format makes a lens designed for 35mm still photography appear as if it has twice the focal length (for the sake of simplicity I will not mention depth-of-field). So a 50mm lens is medium/standard in 35mm, but a moderate telephoto in the 16mm format. A non-fisheye 10 or 12mm would be nice, but I asked everywhere: no luck with the M 42 mount. Thanks anyway for the comment!

    Your videos are excellent and very helpful. I wish some company, like Lomography, perhaps, would remake and relaunch these Russian 16mm and Super 8 cameras, with a few extra conveniences. (Super 16 out of the box, battery power, possibility to add larger external film magazines and so on.) I know they are widely available on Ebay as it is, but it would be nice to be able to get a brand new one and see manufacturing recommence. Perhaps if the new Kodak Super 8 camera ever arrives we will see increased interest in analogue filmmaking and a few new cameras will find their way into the world so we don't have the minefield of reliability issues to worry about when buying used equipment.

    • @truefilm1556
      @truefilm1556  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you. Well many of the K-3 cameras are mint or unused because back when they were made, few people could afford film. So the only issue with these cameras is quality control (it's a gamble, but most if not all issues can be fixed) and the effort of the widened Super 16mm gate (many if not most have burrs and scratch the film so they need to be polished with very fine sand paper, dipped in fine oil).
      Not sure about Lomography. From what I know their philosophy (just have fun and don't worry) is different from what you (and myself) have in mind: upgrading to professional standards. I don't see re-issues of classic Russian film cameras since the blueprints, machines and tooling are very likely long since gone. Only few small parts were injection molded plastic.
      There was a short run of K-3 cameras, fitted with a battery powered crystal sync motor (NCS Products, New York), but it's long since sold out.
      Seen some efforts to add an external 400ft mag to a K-2 because of its flat top, but none has been completed yet (and the K-2 cameras have Russian bayonet lens mounts only).
      16mm is expensive because of the film stock, processing and scanning. The Krasnogorsk models are so inexpensive that any serious upgrade will be way more expensive than the camera itself (even new old stock). It's a better deal buying a second K-3 camera and use it as a second 100ft load in the field.
      Let's hope Kodak will finally get their Super 8mm camera out - and that it will provide a boost for analog filmmaking of all kinds (just fun or more "cinematic" looking projects).

    • @PhoenixWright101
      @PhoenixWright101 Před 5 lety +1

      Yes, you're probably right. I just felt that as Lomography seem to be the highest profile supporter of analogue/photochemical film and have brought back modern versions of very old lenses, for example, they might be inclined to treat us to a new edition of these charming clockwork cameras at some point. The 8mm/Super 8 ones anyway. In the meantime, I am tempted to get a K-3, and your videos are really informative and inspiring, so thanks again.

    • @truefilm1556
      @truefilm1556  Před 5 lety +1

      My pleasure. Might take some time, but I am planning on making videos about all issues that need to be addressed on the K-3. This camera is in fact fantastic value for money and with the Super 16 upgrade you can get truly professional results. You just need to know the workarounds and be a hands-on DIY guy.
      My humble advice: get a Super 16mm K-3 (with re-centering ring installed!), mint or new. You won't regret it.

    We had a conversation about the Zenitar 16mm a while ago and I wound up getting one for my K-3, partially based on our discussion (I was already considering it). I recently tested the resolution of several lenses, mainly focusing around the Meteor 5:1 zoom but also the 16mm Zenitar. I was somewhat surprised at the results. The Meteor was much sharper at the center but the Zenitar held together at the edges better. I posted a vid if you're interested.

      Sorry for responding only now. I'm Christian (true film), can't access my old account, will open a new YT channel as soon as I can.
      I only opened up to full wide (17mm) once and I didn't get any vignetting, but it wasn't an open scan. From other K-3 footage (clearly Super 16 recentered) here on YT I can see that there is slight vignetting depending on focus and perhaps aperture f-stop.
      I would say: if you are willing to do it, try out different shots with 17mm and zoom in slightly in each. I think you will find out that you are fine at all times at about 20mm. The Meteor zoom has done barrel distortion on wider angles (shorter than the standard 25mm), so the Zenitar 16 is perfect. The Super 16 conversion is very much worth it. Found cheap matching 24mm lenses used on ebay. Will get one soon and see if it performs better than the Meteor at the same focal length. Hope this helps.

    • @truefilm1556
      @truefilm1556  Před 6 lety

      edison s. Yes, I have seen some 2x anamorphic footage done with the K-3. You obviulusly need an unmodded (regular 16mm) K-3 or any regular 16mm camera. The resulting image is very wide: 1:2.66. That's wider than the cinema standard 1:2.35. You also get a horizontally stretched grain structure and have only half the horizontal resolution as opposed to the full vertical resolution. Still: shooting regular 16mm anamorphic has its own look and can yield pleasant results. For getting in contact with people who actually shoot on regular 16mm with anamorphic lenses, I'd highly recommend checking this facebook goup: facebook.com/groups/8mmand16mmfilmmakersgroup/?ref=bookmarks

      Well whatever the reason, the information on my channel comes from my own experience, research and many different sources, including some very talented people who found out how to get the very best out of the K-3. It is a quirky camera, never intended for professional use, and needs care and tweaking, but when it works, it produces fantastic, cinematic images. The Meteor zoom lens that comes with it, is really great, even though it doesn't go to a nice wide angle. It would have been very likely too expensive.
