    My mom is from Panama, and my family and I travel there every year. I can say that this is pretty faithful, save for the fact that a lot of man-made landmarks have been built since this Bing map layout was created (there were two new bridges that didn't appear, those being the Centennial Bridge in the Culebra Cut of the Panama Canal and the Atlantic Bridge in Colón, Panama). Additionally, the city has also become denser with more buildings (there were more buildings constructed around the JW Marriott hotel, which was that building you described as looking like something you would see in Dubai at 37:38). Fun fact: Panama actually has the tallest skyscrapers in Latin America.
    The forest that you flew over to land at Marcos A Gelabert International at 42:24 is actually a national park - it's called Metropolitan National Park (occasionally, you can see the airport from there).
    The mountain at 42:24 beyond and to the left of the runway is called Cerro Ancón (199m), and there is a flag at its summit that measures 15 meters long and 10 meters wide that you can see from pretty much anywhere in that area of the city.
    The building at 38:16 that's shaped like a drill-bit is referred to by a couple names in Spanish: "la Tusa", which translates to " the Corncob"; and "el Tornillo", which translates to "the Screw."
    The causeway you see directly ahead of you at 34:50 is called in Spanish "la Calzada de Amador" (before that, it was just called the "Causeway"). It was actually constructed using sediment dug up to construct the Canal itself (not all of the sediment dug up, of course, but some of it), and it was built to minimize waves into the canal and to link the couple of islands there. There you can find a bunch of restaurants (especially seafood restaurants), convention centers, and the Biomuseo, which is a museum focused on the natural history of Panama (it's a smallish museum, but it's packed with a LOT of information).
    The road you pointed out at 35:44 that loops out into the water connects the modern city to the old city of Panama, which is called "el Casco Antiguo". Some of the landmarks there are "el Edificio de la Presidencia" ("The Presidential Building"), the Panama Canal museum, some churches and some cathedrals.
    All in all, this looks pretty cool and easily identifiable as Panama, though I do agree with the comments that there are a lot of buildings that have been constructed in the past several years.

    • @devilfriend
      @devilfriend Před 4 lety +2

      Excellent overview. Regarding the lack of skyscrapers and some landmarks it's weird because here you can see the Ocean Reef Islands (in Paitilla around 37:05), you can see the second Island here was recently "formed" so this means the map data for Panama at least was taken between 2016 and 2017. The Atlantic bridge opening was last year so it makes sense it's not there but the Centennial bridge was completed in 2004. Same goes for a lot of tall buildings like the Miramar hotel and others, Panamá city is the city with more skyscrapers in Latin America so it should look packed. It is still pretty good and using Bing Maps data means it could improve.
      I've seen Google Maps 3D buildings for Panama and it looks similar to this. Bigger cities have almost everything rendered in 3D, including trees, but they don't do that everywhere, mostly in the US and Europe.

    Never thought I'd ever end up going to Panama either, but I spent 6 weeks there in 2018, doing a geophysical survey at the Corozal American Cemetery, over by the Miraflores Locks you pointed out at 33:17. (Correct, old locks to the left there, and the new to the right.) I didn't quite see the cemetery, but it's pretty hilly terrain. I might have caught a glimpse of it off to the right briefly as you turned final, but I'll have to double-check next Monday. My co-workers got to stay on the island out on that causeway you're aiming for at 35:22 (I was in a little bungalow on the mainland 2 miles from the ocean, lol). And at about 37:58, you're aiming for one of the oldest European settlements in the Americas and the first on the Pacific coast, Panama Viejo founded roughly 1520. I pushed the GPR rig around those ruins one of our Saturdays off to help the local archaeological team. That odd tower out in front on its own that you pointed at might have been the autogen version of the old cathedral at Viejo.

    I have sailed through the Panama Canal four times, admittedly in days gone past when I was in the USCG, but FS2020 has captured the beauty of the canal area. From the sea wall at Colon where you enter from the Atlantic and see civilization on your port and nothing but jungle shorelines to starboard to the islands in the lake and the jumbled mass of Civilization of Panama City. While it has changed immensely since I last transited, the piers where we tied up after the last locks on the pacific side still exist and are accurate. To answer your question on ship movement in the lakes, once you enter the canal, Panama Canal Pilot boards and is responsible for ship movement u til your ship exits the last lock. The waterway is well marked and interestingly, the Pilot is totally responsible for the safety of the ship relieving the Commanding Officer of that ever present responsibility while in the canal. Thanks for the flight, great memories for a retired sailor.

The city doesn't look at all like the real Panama city, but the bridge is there, I can see Amador causeway looking OK, but the city in mfs is really far from the actual city. The actual city is full of skyscrapers almost everywhere. Here it is not even close to it, with almost no skyscrapers. No tall buildings in Costa del Este, while there are only tall buildings there in real. For the road at 35:45, it actually is like that, it is a kind of highway to go around Casco Viejo as the traffic there is insane. I thought it would have looked better. Time is now going even slower the close we get to release, my excitement is now in overload!

Is it possible that you could do a flight in Poland and explore both farmland, cities and castles and maybe some mountains? Large body of water just after the locks is Gatun Lake - There are channel markers (and lights) for navigation to get you through that part. We use to have what they call a 'Bohio" where we would go out and spend weekends fishing and watching the ships pass through. Was a great experience. - The airport you landed at was formerly known as Albrook AFB (Family was stationed there in the 70's). It's so fantastic that they even have the Thatcher Ferry Bridge modeled and not a 'default'. Wonder if my house is still there that was on the right side of the runway near where you landed. There is one main channel across the Gatun lake. In the old days ships would rise through the locks at both ends in the morning, cross the lake in the afternoon in both directions then descend to the oceans through the locks in the evening. It may be different since the new locks were built. Pilots are in command for the whole canal transit.

    I am from Panama and I can confirm there are many, MANY more buildings now, the weird road you saw is indeed a real thing and the airport you landed on is not the main city airport, thats just a national-flight based airport that is next to a shopping mall.
    Edit: also, the "mess" you see there is the expanded canal being constructed, that was more than 3 years ago and its well finised now.

  • @waynejenkins1848
    @waynejenkins1848 Před 4 lety

    The old locks are the ones with the vessels going through which are the the Gatun locks. They have basically electric trains called mules that attach wires to the vessels on the bow and stern. They then heave the vessels through into each lock. The new lock was obviously being constructed when the image was taken. Sure someone will clean it up in the future. The second set of locks on the Pacific side are called the Miraflores Locks. I've sailed through the Panama a few times and its so nice. The Sim has done a really good job of it. Basically before you get to the locks you board a pilot who assists the Captain in navigating the vessel through the system. Within the lakes there are buoys or channel markers and like a road the vessels stick to one side of the channel. Certain parts of the canal, the really tight/narrow parts are one way only so the pilot will speak to the other vessels heading in the opposite direction and they decide between them who has priority. I was a Deck Officer in the Merchant and I was lucky enough to do part of my steering certificate coming through the canal. Another part was going into Melbourne and I finally past going into Iran. Best instruction I ever received was by a Panama Pilot "See that ship ahead? Follow it". :-)
    P.S. There's Crocodiles in there so if you survive the landing you may not survive to be rescued.

Just the Colon locks (the north side) then a turn around. Cruise ships and smaller freighters still go through the old canal. The new (much wider locks) are for the super-containers that do not fit in the old one.The locks system is completely different and very ingenious. Fun flight to do.I'll try it when I get FS2020.

Those lakes by the way - pretty sure the ships have strict channels to follow. Remember fishing on one of those and hearing the howling monkeys in the trees around the lake!
