It's always nice to go for a hunt on rare or aged tobaccos. I find that's one of the best things about pipe smoking. You wouldn't have that with cigarettes.

Ah, the thrill of the hunt! Then the satisfaction of obtaining something that has no value in the eyes of most smokers, but, to you, it is a treasure. A most enjoyable tour of the small town and shop. I really enjoy these types of videos. Thanks Mark!

Another thoroughly enjoyable video. Congratulations on a successful hunt! I too occasionally happen upon aged tins that others avoid in favor of "fresh" tobacco. I'm amazed that old tins are scorned by so many. Their loss. Thanks for taking us on the hunt! Take care.

Great timing with the boat...that was great. I enjoy finding tobacco tucked away in little shops as well, although small shops are getting harder and harder to come by. On my last hunt I came across a great locally hand made humidor. Great video as usual. Take care.

      Hello Stacey,
Thanks for watching - truly appreciated! And...yes...its the same here...less and less tobacco shops. And some of them even give the "old stuff" back to the producer...I think, because they don`t have enough space for leftovers...
But that just means, we have to try harder...LOL

Well...there is no big secret to it....I prefer, to take the tobacco in the bowl in one portion, without tamping or pressing in between...I try to keep the tobacco as twisted as possible...by that way, the glow finds it's way down to the bowl very easy... When it comes to the flakes, I rub them between the hands in rotating ways, until there is some kind of tobacco ball....very twisted. I gently put it into the bowl...that's it...
But I think, its mainly a question a practice... :-)
      Take care! Be well!

Hi Mark: Another great video. Very entertaining one, too! You know....I've met a number of the German YTPC guys over the last six months or so, and it's been great. Such really nice fellows. I have noticed one thing, though. Generally speaking, most of them don't like latakia. As a matter of fact, they often have fairly strong negative opinions about the stuff. Do you have any idea why? It's pretty much the opposite reaction here in America. Or, of course, in Britain. Thanks, Mark. Really fun video, today. Be Well, my friend. Ed

      @bremenpipesmoker6571  Před 8 lety

      Hello Ed, my friend!
Thanks for taking the time - and good words!
Yes, your observation is absolutely correct...I was thinking about that since several month. Athough - of course - my thinking was: "Why is (nearly) everything in America about Latakia...?" ...LOL
I think, its really a complicated question...and I think, both sides are quite special compared to the rest of the pipe smoking world... In Germany, you have to consider, that the traditions of tobacco and smoking were completely interrupted by the end of WWII. Before that, most of the tobacco was imported from the Balkan region...the "normal" Cigarette was a dark Balkan cigarette ... and cigar smoking (mainly imported from Brasil and produced in the Bremen-region) was the average daily smoke of the common man (often a card board box a week...)... The line of tradition of todays pipe smoking mainly reach back to the 1970s and is related to political changes and societal orientation to the scandinavian countries..especially Denmark. Pipe smoking (often as a habbit of intellectual men) then was combined with "light" and "good smelling" tobaccos (liked by women and without the "rudeness" of the Latakia and Balkan blends, smoked by their fathers in the trenches...)....that was the spirit of the times...scandinavian names, furnitures and holiday destinations became quite popular...and still are...the cigarette was american...the pipe scandinavian... I think, thats ONE reason... And there are also reasons (I think), why americans are that much into Latakia...have you ever thought, why you don`t see any campfire videos in german (or any other..) YTPC ...and why "out in the woods" is a very american (except for Yogi perhaps..LOL) video concept...
Another question is: "Why is there (nearly) no "original" Latakia - means Syrian Latakia - in America...?" ...which is more expensive than the cyprian...but also much "rounder" and "softer"...
But thats all too complicated for a comment...LOL
Joshua and me...we are planing on several "transatlantic tobacco talks" with many topics...and we have this one already in mind...same as the question, why germans seem to like the moisty aromatics more than other people?...we think, it has to do with the 9mm filter...
Take care, Ed...hope, some of these thoughts may be useful for you...LOL
      Be well!

Hello Mark: Thank You for this very thoughtful response. I think the points that you make are great, and very good insights. I was thinking of the types of tobacco that were smoked in America, during the 30's and 40's...the ones my father would have smoked, for example.Of course, cigarettes were extremely popular, as you mentioned. Brands like "Lucky Strike", or "Chesterfield" (all unfiltered Burley tobacco cigarettes). With pipe tobacco, the popular brands were generally Burley blends, also, like "Prince Albert". When you think of an "American" pipe tobacco, you usually think of Burley, or Kentucky. I don't think my father, or any "average Joe" (common man), ever smoked Latakia. I doubt if he knew what it was. So, I suspect, as you said, that the influence of WWII, was big in changing things. The GI's may have returned from Europe with a taste for these Balkan type tobaccos. Very interesting discussion. I will look forward to your "Trans-Atlantic" tobacco talks with Joshua. Sounds great! Thanks. Ed

...welll...thats really an interesting information...we can`t really exclude the possibility, that Germans (and Europeans except our British friends) smoke Virginia, because its so American...and Americans smoke Latakia, because its so European...

I'm a fairly new pipe smoker and I absolutely love Latakia. The more Latakia a blend has, the better, as far as I'm concerned. As for the reason American pipe smokers love Latakia, I think it may have something to do with the similarities between the taste of Latakia and American BBQ. I'm from the south and a smoked whole hog, with a strong vinegar based sauce, is my absolute favorite food. However, alot people, in other parts of the world, probably wouldn't like smoked pork with a vinegar based sauce, but it's an American delicacy, when done correctly, especially in the deep south. Latakia tobacco is very similar in flavor IMO....
Just my 2 cents, but I'm positive, it's the reason I love Latakia....

I'm fairly new to piping im big into the hookah hobby but recently started in piping but I have a question in not big on all the diff types of tobacco. Is their a huge flavor difference in all the diff types of tobacco? I know obviously the aromatics are diff but say the regular flavored types are their huge differences like say for example the Virginia, burley, rubbed, etc. I'm just on the smoother aromatics now for starters but will be branching out soon the hookah world has spoiled me on flavors and taste as well as smell so I'm just dabbing in aromatics but have been watching a ton of videos on pipers and the diff types of tobacco. That's my question anything will help if anyone sees this! Cheers 🍻

I had a similar experience when hunting for a good tobacconist here in the Bay Area. Found a pipe shop in Palo Alto (edwardspipelosaltos.com/) that only deals in pipes and pipe tobacco, which is a rarity as most shop are 95% cigars and 5% pipes and pipe tobacco, if that.
This shop had a bunch of 10-15 year-old tins from Peter Heinrich and McBaren all still with their old price tags. Was able to pick up several vintage tins for a song, some of which are no longer in production.

Yes, the Merrschaum is very useful for Aromatics. First of all, it provides a very precise taste...but it also holdes back a lot of humidity ...and (last but not least)...there is no cross over or "ghost" effect...

...well...Rum and Maple is some kind of "grandfather tobacco" here...synonym for cheap "brick and mortar" tobacco... You can find that in any fuel station. It's produced by Planta Berlin...(guess, they bought a license back in the day...also for "half and half" and other stuff)...
