Smoking a bowl of standard mixture as I watch this. I’ve just recently gotten back into the pipe hobby after having quit cigarettes. It’s nice to have something I can dig into and learn about again. Cheers Bradley!

When I first started pipe smoking I got a tin of three oaks Syrian. It was the most amazing Latakia blend I had ever tried. By the time I smoked the tin, it was no more. It was an early and important lesson in pipe tobacco availability. Then McClelland stopped producing.

Has Cornell and Diehl ever contacted you about collaborating on a blend? I would bet a lot of the YTPC would buy a tin to smoke along. Another idea would be for you to be a guest panel member on their mystery tobacco blend series on YT; or you could be the inquisitor. I know I'd enjoy those things. Anyone else?

If you can get your hands on it, you should also try Germain's Full Latakia (Pure Latakia). It's their secret ingredient, and tastes nothing like what you'll get anywhere else.

Back before I was able to snag a couple ounces of Syrian Latakia, I took a tin of HH and picked out every tiny ribbon of Latakia from the blend. Hours of tedium. But well worth it. It’s a gem.

You should try to add some Syrian Latakia to Elizabethan Mixture; call it "Bradley's English Mixture". I can't imagine that would be a bad combination.

I got lucky and purchased 16oz of HH Vintage Syrian shortly before it went off the market. According to my jar, it was produced 11/2017 and I jarred it up in 4/2018. Needless to say, I only rarely smoke it.

Well described, Bradley! My favorite Syrian Lat blend will always be McC Tudor Castle. I still have about 10min left, and I I’m,y smoke it during the holidays now. It will be greatly missed when it’s gone…..

Ah, Syrian Latakia. I greatly prefer that over Cyprian, though the latter makes great blends. My favorite Cyprian Latakia blend is probably Dunhill/Peterson Nightcap. My local tobacconist has a blend he threw together called Sherlock's Choice, and it has a generous portion of Syrian Latakia (he has several pounds stockpiled). Amazing stuff.
I would say the Cyprian Lat has a greater amount of a smoke flavor and is a little rougher around the edges, so it pairs well with and is tamed by high-sugar Virginias and Perique. The Syrian Lat is more subdued and fragrant, almost like an incense.
Sadly, it doesn't look like Syria will be producing it in quantity anytime soon due to political unrest, overharvest of the local woods needed to produce it, and the younger generation not desiring to do the work to keep it going (that last one is how we almost lost St. James Perique).
I would cherish some this. I should have bought when I had the chance. 👍🏻

I absolutely hate that I got into pipe smoking so late in life.. it was after I came home from the Iraq war but I wish I could just 1 time my hands on Frog Morton so bad!! I hear so much about how amazing it was! Now I’ll prob never get the opportunity to try it!
