The way James Marster delivers each line as Zamasu is just so phenomenal and has so much passion behind it. James Marster is single handily the reason why english dub Zamasu/fused Zamasu is my favorite villain in all of dragon ball.

He was hoping to be involved with the film and gave advice to the crew, before being told he wasn't going to be involved. Toriyama was so offended by it and the movie, he decided to return to Dragon Ball after over a decade to create his own Dragon Ball movie; Battle of Gods. This led to Toriyama revitalizing interest in the series, leading to the creation of Dragon Ball Super

Big props to James Marsters, who played "Piccolo" in this "movie" and came back to redeem himself as the official voice of Zamasu in Dragon Ball Super. Did a pretty damn good job at it too.
One of the best theater experiences I ever had. Went to the midnight showing for this movie and it was like 20 adults that all knew it was going to suck. Not long after it started, things quickly and naturally turned into a live rifftrax. Twas a magical night
That must have been an absolute riot. There's no better feeling than seeing who can rip a crappy movie the hardest. My friends and I did the same thing for the remake of The Fog back in 2006. By the end of it the entire audience had turned against the film, and me and my friends were riffing on it while everyone laughed and joined in. I'll never forget near the end when the protagonist chick walks up to the pirate ghost chief in the middle of the field, I said "Make out with the Flying Dutchman!" and then she ACTUALLY kissed the ghost for some reason. The entire theater burst out in surprise, disbelief and laughter. I couldn't believe I called that.
I had a similar experience with my friend in high school when seeing that awful GI Joe live action movie (the first one, it was amazing enough it had a sequel) but nobody in the theater seemed feel the same way. I was a bit surprised, because it was a terrible movie.
I worked at a movie theater when this movie came out. Morning shift, two guys went in, a third guy went in shortly after, that was it for the whole showing. I go in to clean, wave the two guys out, the third is asleep in his seat, i go in try to wake him...He slumps over, foaming at the mouth! Paramedics were called and the guy was able to walk out under his own power but...the movie damn near killed him.

Fun Fact - the screenwriter who wrote this movie apologized to everyone for writing the movie the way it was. He had also never seen Dragon Ball and admitted to wanting an easy paycheck. That’s why it turned out the way it did. He did an interview on this.

You can tell that Dragonball Evolution is indeed a revolutionary film in adaptation history when Goku looks like Billie Joe Armstrong and Piccolo looks like Brainiac who has some meth crystals instead of kryptonite.
This film was the Morbius of my high school days: everyone was ironically convinced that it was the greatest movie ever made, to the point where kids were socially shunned because they didn’t get the joke or play along with it. This went on for almost five months.
I remember when jokes could live on for months at a time, nowadays a joke or a meme can't exist for more than a few days before people start screaming and crying about how it's "old" and "stale" and "isn't funny anymore"

There is a book called The Letter For The King, Netflix made a live action show based on it. It wasn't anything like the book, it had some names from the book and the most basic concept from the book (that the hero had to deliver a letter to a king in another kingdom). Other than that it is a completely different story that isn't even good, which sucks because the book and it's sequel are amazing. I just wanted to mention this because it was something that frustrated me and it's a similar subject to the video. Sorry for writing an essay.
My personal trainer and I both like DBZ. Years ago, he was telling me about how awful this movie was, and he said to me: *"When I first saw Piccolo, I almost killed myself."* And I think that pretty much sums up this entire film.

At least it would maybe be a solidly 2-star or 1.5-star movie out of 5. It would be worth no one’s time, but it wouldn’t be this offensive. It might even be slightly more coherent because it wouldn’t be trying to include any the most superficial details of the source material.
The worst part about that Piccolo costume is it was originally WAY worse. He wasn't even green-skinned originally, the actor actually had to work with the makeup crew to get it looking closer to the original feel

The actor playing Goku read all of Dragon Ball AND Journey to the West as preparation only for the director tell him his roll was going to be nothing like that. I am certain the way he plays Goku throughout the movie was an act of passive aggression and I can't blame him for that.
When my brother was in the military in Korea, he wanted to bring me something back as a gift. He knew I liked anime and was aware of the name "Dragonball." He didn't know that I'd already seen this travesty on film so he got me the DVD. I couldn't bring myself to tell him how horrible it was until years later, and by then the DVD had fallen out of it's case and randomly teleported around the house for a while, always in the floor.
I love how they were so incredibly lazy that they couldn't even be bothered to dye the hair of the woman playing Bulma blue. They just dyed one strand of her hair and said "Fuck it, that's good enough. They're only paying me in Big Mac's anyway"

@@KamronA everything was unrealistic. piccolo wasn't supposed to be green and the oozaru was some humanoid fish creature (there are leaks online if you're curious) but it was so poorly received by test audiences they changed it last-minute, hence the shoddy CGI. that also balooned the budget. it was in the range of 15 mil initially (from what i remember) and it got to around 40 mil. in the end. so yes, by all intents and purposes, this was a low-low budget cash grab.
The funniest thing to me about this movie is that in failing to make the actors look like Goku & Chi-Chi, they made them look almost exactly like Gohan & Videl.

james is such a cool person, i first knew him as spike from buffy the vampire slayer. he was so on board to be casted in DB:Evolution, im pretty sure he instantly regretted it as soon as he read the script. im glad he came back to voice one of the best DBZ villains, it must have been terrifying for him to return after all the hate he got from the film.
He’s someone who consistently cares about his work. In this movie he’s thr only reason Piccolo even vaguely resembles what he should look like and in Buffy he rapidly went from a fake and cheesy British accent to sounding so natural you’d never think he wasn’t raised in England.

Fun fact about the actor for Yamcha: His name is Joon Park, the leader of the KPOP Rap group G.O.D from 1999-2005. In 2006 he took a hiatus from music, moved back to L.A. and pursued acting. He first did a cameo in Speed Racer (yes, the live action one) as a nameless Yakuza Driver and then took this role, where he injured his back and had to rehabilitate himself for over 2 years. So his 'acting' is a mere consequence of his inexperience... But re-watching that scene, Imma have to agree with Charlie.... It's basically anti-acting..

Ahhh I remember this dumpster fire came out when I was in college, and one of my buddies tried to convince me that this movie actually wasn't that bad despite us all railing it before it even came out. He wore a fedora though. I wasn't convinced.
The only actor who definitely made a comeback was the actor for Piccolo (James Marsters) as he went on to voice Zamasu in DBS, and he is the only reason they kept Piccolo color accurate in the movie as opposed to the blue color they were planning on giving him.
I remember watching this in theaters with my older brother and a friend, and we were flabbergasted. We could not believe how bad it was, and we didn't even talk after walking out of the theater. I don't think we spoke about it until several months afterwards; it was almost as if we had a shared hallucination. To this day, this is the movie that I hate more than any other, and is the reason why I will never have faith in any live action adaptation of an animated show. The director/writer (can't remember which one, may be the same guy) came out a few years later and straight up apologized, saying he never knew anything about DBZ and it was just a paycheck. Good o'l hollywood.
Something absolutely hilarious, is that the guy who played piccolo, James Marsters, voice acted in Dragon Ball Super as Zamasu, another villain. He killed that role, and became a great character. He was already a good actor though. He was the vampire Spike in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. he was hilarious as that character and genuinely the only good thing about that show. My Dad (a true hero, in this case) took me & my childhood best friend next door to see this movie. We were huge Dragonball heads. We played the PS2 games, played with the action figures, we loved the Dragon Ball universe. This movie was so bad, it was almost as if we disassociated during the whole thing. We never talked about it afterwards. It was just a giant WTF moment. Nothing about it was accurate to the anime, except the names. That’s all they got right.
This Goku: A socially awkward teenager werewolf, who asks how to get laid from his airbender grandpa. Actual Goku: A ten year old were-King-Kong alien living in the mountains, who thought marriage was food. This had to have been intentional. No one can do something quite like this, without actually trying to create pure narrative/visual mockery.
I genuinely got disgusted after watching this movie as a kid, I loved watching the main series and the og animated movies, so when I saw this I got excited because it was a dragon ball movie I have never seen before, and it was live action, but I have since been traumatized by the horrors this movie contains, but as other people said, it lead to dragon ball making a big comeback, I wish I could have kept this trauma back in the 2000s where it belongs.

Before watching it, I had some general sense on what Dragonball is which is why it kinda felt weird why Goku is older and American which I didn't mind back then.

It's how I felt with the Death Note movie. Literally, none of the characters were what they were suppose to be. L was a idiot, using random people to draw out Light. Light was being manipulated by the love interest and not the other way around. It was just so fucking bad. The only decent part of it was Willem Dafoe as Ryuk. His voice is superb for the role. (though woulda been nice to have the original voice actor as he knocked it out of the park in the Dub Anime)
They should make a sequel where the first scene is the last scene of the first movie, then Goku wakes up like "that was fucking weird" and they do it from scratch with the actual story.

Did you see the blue streak in Bulma's hair? That was a subtle touch only a true fan would notice and a great callback to her actual hair color in the anime. When I saw it in the theatre I cried because it was a reference that I knew about.

Dragonball Evolution is cemented in history as the pinnacle of shitty live action movies and serves as the best example as to why live action anime adaptations shouldn’t exist. It was recently announced that Justin Lin was going to be making a Live Action One Punch Man movie and I worry that it’s going to pull a Dragonball evolution. They’re probably going to give Saitama hair and a beard throughout the movie.
I remember when this movie first came out when I was 8/9 and we went to the cinema intending to watch another movie. I saw the dragon ball evolution movie poster and I begged my dad to let us watch it however he made us watch the initial movie that we went to see. Couple years later i watched dragon ball evolution on tv or wherever, can’t remember. I now thank my dad up till this day for not allowing us to watch the movie that day.
I moderated and administrated one of the biggest Dragon Ball Z Forums in the world for about 15 years. We had a Dragon Ball Evolution section for when it first came out. Everyone hated it, no one used the section, hahaha
I asked my extremely Christian aunty to buy me Dragon ball Evolution as a kid because I was such a huge Dragon ball nerd. I only watched it once, loved it and my aunt threw it the way the next day because she thought it was demon spawn. Even though I was disappointed not to watch it again as a kid, now as an adult, I'd say she wasn't quite off lmao.
Imagine being James Marsters (Piccolo) in this thing. He became an actual fan of the series while researching for the part, but that only makes it crystal clear how little of it there is in this adaptation and they were being SO stupid about it he had to basically force in green makeup for Piccolo to have at least _one_ thing portrayed correctly

He was hoping to be involved with the film and gave advice to the crew, before being told he wasn't going to be involved. Toriyama was so offended by it and the movie, he decided to return to Dragon Ball after over a decade to create his own Dragon Ball movie; Battle of Gods. This led to Toriyama revitalizing interest in the series, leading to the creation of Dragon Ball Super

My friends and I did the same thing for the remake of The Fog back in 2006. By the end of it the entire audience had turned against the film, and me and my friends were riffing on it while everyone laughed and joined in. I'll never forget near the end when the protagonist chick walks up to the pirate ghost chief in the middle of the field, I said "Make out with the Flying Dutchman!" and then she ACTUALLY kissed the ghost for some reason. The entire theater burst out in surprise, disbelief and laughter. I couldn't believe I called that.

I worked at a movie theater when this movie came out. Morning shift, two guys went in, a third guy went in shortly after, that was it for the whole showing.
I go in to clean, wave the two guys out, the third is asleep in his seat, i go in try to wake him...He slumps over, foaming at the mouth! Paramedics were called and the guy was able to walk out under his own power but...the movie damn near killed him.

There is a book called The Letter For The King, Netflix made a live action show based on it. It wasn't anything like the book, it had some names from the book and the most basic concept from the book (that the hero had to deliver a letter to a king in another kingdom). When my brother was in the military in Korea, he wanted to bring me something back as a gift. He knew I liked anime and was aware of the name "Dragonball." He didn't know that I'd already seen this travesty on film so he got me the DVD. I couldn't bring myself to tell him how horrible it was until years later, and by then the DVD had fallen out of it's case and randomly teleported around the house for a while, always in the floor.

so yes, by all intents and purposes, this was a low-low budget cash grab.

I remember watching this in theaters with my older brother and a friend, and we were flabbergasted. We could not believe how bad it was, and we didn't even talk after walking out of the theater. I don't think we spoke about it until several months afterwards; it was almost as if we had a shared hallucination. To this day, this is the movie that I hate more than any other, and is the reason why I will never have faith in any live action adaptation of an animated show. The director/writer (can't remember which one, may be the same guy) came out a few years later and straight up apologized, saying he never knew anything about DBZ and it was just a paycheck. Good o'l hollywood.
Then who they hell paid him? They are the true villains here.

I think I remember seeing this movie at some point as a child. That maybe why I've been consistently miserable my entire life.
My Dad (a true hero, in this case) took me & my childhood best friend next door to see this movie. We were huge Dragonball heads. We played the PS2 games, played with the action figures, we loved the Dragon Ball universe. This movie was so bad, it was almost as if we disassociated during the whole thing. We never talked about it afterwards. It was just a giant WTF moment. Nothing about it was accurate to the anime, except the names. That’s all they got right.
This Goku: A socially awkward teenager werewolf, who asks how to get laid from his airbender grandpa.
Actual Goku: A ten year old were-King-Kong alien living in the mountains, who thought marriage was food.

I genuinely got disgusted after watching this movie as a kid, I loved watching the main series and the og animated movies, so when I saw this I got excited because it was a dragon ball movie I have never seen before, and it was live action, but I have since been traumatized by the horrors this movie contains, but as other people said, it lead to dragon ball making a big comeback, I wish I could have kept this trauma back in the 2000s where it belongs.

I saw it in theatres and could not believe my eyes. Justin Chatwin as Goku was goofy as hell.
I remember being so excited as a kid to see this, but my parents wouldn’t take me. Little did I know, I was saved from seeing this disaster of a movie. My older brother had seen it and he said it was bad. I had no idea it was *this* horrific.
Just so you know, the woman that Charlie said was never given a name in the film is supposed to be Mai.
Also this movie made Goku girl crazy to the point that when he has trouble being able to do a simple ki blast it's resolved by Chi-chi implying that if he can do it that he can kiss her. (Reminder that in OG DragonBall Goku can immediately do a kamehameha after seeing Roshi do it once)

@@462n I did, me and my whole family watched it in theathers when I was 6. I liked it back then since it was one of my early experiences in watching at theaters. Before watching it, I had some general sense on what Dragonball is which is why it kinda felt weird why Goku is older and American which I didn't mind back then.
When goku said "It's gokin' time" and preceded to goke all over the bad guys, I cried. True genius.

0:55 Pretty much like he said. This movie could pass on as being a generic martial arts Kung Fu movie for kids, and not a IRL Dragonball adaptation.
DB was made for kids so the spirit of the movie is accurate.

As someone who still refuses to watch the film, every review and clip I see of the movie just makes me more and more confused. What is happening? How could they mess up that bad? Is Goku in fucking school and getting bullied?? And actually cares about getting women? And fitting in? How can you deviate from a source so much and still have the balls to call it Dragon Ball? I'm less angry and more amazed honestly that this even got made.
i think you have to watch it, as a fan its almost a test, you will maybe laugh at least at the sheer infuriation of the entire film, its like a live joke beings played on you while watching it

It's how I felt with the Death Note movie. Literally, none of the characters were what they were suppose to be. L was a idiot, using random people to draw out Light. Light was being manipulated by the love interest and not the other way around. It was just so fucking bad. The only decent part of it was Willem Dafoe as Ryuk. His voice is superb for the role. (though woulda been nice to have the original voice actor as he knocked it out of the park in the Dub Anime)

They should make a sequel where the first scene is the last scene of the first movie, then Goku wakes up like "that was fucking weird" and they do it from scratch with the actual story.

I had a similar experience with The Mechanic 2. I had such a viscerally revulsive reaction to that shitfest of a sequel to an amazing movie.

It was sad to see Chow Yun Fat, one of the greatest action stars of Hong Kong, get treated this badly as master Roshi in this movie. Anyone who has seen his movies like Hard Boiled, The Killer and A Better Tomorrow will know what I am talking about

It's also even sad that Stephen Chow's name was attached as a "the producer" when he was only a consultant producer and they didn't even accept most of his inputs. Guess they were paying him a lot of money just to keep his name attached there as a producer.

Everything in Dragon Ball Evolution is a bad adaptation. The character designs, arcs, cast, acting, and visuals are all wrong. This movie looks like it came from Wish.

Did you see the blue streak in Bulma's hair? That was a subtle touch only a true fan would notice and a great callback to her actual hair color in the anime. When I saw it in the theatre I cried because it was a reference that I knew about.

Dragonball Evolution is cemented in history as the pinnacle of shitty live action movies and serves as the best example as to why live action anime adaptations shouldn’t exist. It was recently announced that Justin Lin was going to be making a Live Action One Punch Man movie and I worry that it’s going to pull a Dragonball evolution. They’re probably going to give Saitama hair and a beard throughout the movie.

I remember when this movie first came out when I was 8/9 and we went to the cinema intending to watch another movie. I saw the dragon ball evolution movie poster and I begged my dad to let us watch it however he made us watch the initial movie that we went to see. Couple years later i watched dragon ball evolution on tv or wherever, can’t remember. I now thank my dad up till this day for not allowing us to watch the movie that day.
I moderated and administrated one of the biggest Dragon Ball Z Forums in the world for about 15 years. We had a Dragon Ball Evolution section for when it first came out.

I asked my extremely Christian aunty to buy me Dragon ball Evolution as a kid because I was such a huge Dragon ball nerd. I only watched it once, loved it and my aunt threw it the way the next day because she thought it was demon spawn. Even though I was disappointed not to watch it again as a kid, now as an adult, I'd say she wasn't quite off lmao.

Imagine being James Marsters (Piccolo) in this thing. He became an actual fan of the series while researching for the part, but that only makes it crystal clear how little of it there is in this adaptation and they were being SO stupid about it he had to basically force in green makeup for Piccolo to have at least _one_ thing portrayed correctly
But he finally did justice to the franchise and played zamasu. Another green skin supervillian that's not so bad.

So fun fact about piccolo, the actor who played him actually said that the costume originally was even worse and that he had to tell them to make it look more like the original. I think all that amounted to was making him green and giving him like head indentations that looked like antennas so it didn't result in much but you know at least the person playing him tried.
