That only happened because he lost the popular vote and his ego couldn't take it.
No one was willing to be the one to let Trump know that he lost. Even the whole GOP wasn't willing to let him know. Despite how Trump basically broke all assumed rules of conduct, even the cowards in his party eventually figured that the "process" would work, and Trump would eventually resort to more civil behaviour, and concede defeat.
GOP enabled him and they were rewarded with this failed coup. And even now they're still enabling him. The GOP saved face by turning on Nixon when facts showed he was a criminal; this current GOP will go down in history as pathetic because they're basically leaving it up to the DOJ to take care of Trump and his messes.

Lawrence had the most accurate summary of the situation. Everyone was relying on the regular process to deliver the expected results without realizing that Trump was willing to hijack the process.
How could they not know this? I suspect on some level they KNEW but were in denial about what/who they had tied themselves to.
@@sachita2920 - I’m guessing that these people failed to realize that they themselves were supposed to be an integral part of that democratic machinery delivering the “regular process” of the peaceful transfer of power. They all seemed to think that duty fell upon others somewhere else along the way. We’ve all learned a valuable lesson that our democracy is only as resilient as is the quality of character possessed by our elected leaders. Elect a clown, expect a circus.

I don't think they've let anybody off the hook, but they need to be confident they can win the case before indicting. We'd be foolish to think they aren't investigating and simultaneously weighing their chances of conviction or plea deal. Lots of things happen all the time that you don't hear from the media.

We still don't have the full story. It's quite good to have this hearing in the public eye. It's more believable hearing it directly from these witnesses than just hearing a news report. So many are coming forward with information we didn't know about.

Civil Villain, in my opinion, not "for someone as ridiculously clownish as Trump"', but a way to absolute power! Trump was just the means, and if they had succeeded, there would be no free and fair elections in future. They would hold on to the "presidency" for ever if possible. Mark Meadows knew the election was fairly lost to trump when he went to Florida he knew trzzz was going to blame him and spill whatever he know of him ! Like all the rest that are afraid to speak up.
Trump probably already told him he didn't want to hear from Meadows. That he was going to do what he wanted, because he was the almighty president. He clearly ised that in the secret service who were keeping him from the violent mob at the Capitol. They saved us from an even worse situation. Trump actually leading them and telling them specifically what to do. It must have frosted his boat to not be in front yelling "charge" and "hang Mike Pence" and "hang Pelosi" and hang whoever else got in his way.

If even one lawyer he consulted had said it was possible, Pence would have done it. I do think Quayle was the ultimate authority for Pence, because he knew the Bush administration would have explored every possibility during Bush v. Gore.
@@bhays05 Quayle was Bush-1’s VP, not Bush-2. I suspect the Quayle connection is probably that he and Pence are both robots built in Indiana. Anyway, I don’t remember the timeline exactly, but apparently he was entertaining Meadows in his office well after Dec 14 (when the “reasonables” had given up) before ultimately needing Quayle to tell him no. .

I'm an attorney and I can tell you that what you think someone was thinking will go over like a screen door on a submarine in the courtroom..
You can, however, document how conversations and behaviors changed after a certain point, witness speculation aside, and let a jury reach that conclusion
