I think it is oil for simulate exhaust smoke, i have a similar system in my Leopard II tank (not 100% sure though..)
The systems are hydraulic. I don't have this model but i do have a few hydraulic systems for them floating around where i got into them once upon a time

Oh boy you sure did demonstrate the light kit. That thing has some really good lights. I wonder if it digs in the dirt. Well recon nobody knows till they buy one. Buddy you are on; e outstanding reviewer. Everybody should know that the lights work good. Especially on a rc that costs Upward of $3500.00!!
