- A week ago I shared with you my western tack haul video. And in that video I showed you the western saddle I found on Facebook Marketplace. Thankfully the saddle is sound, but it was in desperate need of a makeover. The leather was soooo stiff! And when I removed one of the stirrups, well there was a nest of spider eggs hidden....that was gross!
And I decided before I put this saddle on my horse, I wanted to go over it completely and restore not only the leather, but the rough out as well.
I did some research to figure out the best way to go about my saddle makeover before I did it and this video shows you the process I went through to make it happen! I am so pleased with the results!

Saddle looked amazing when finished, but if you don’t mind my saying, with leather this dry and dirty, it would have paid you to strip the saddle down properly, taking off the billets and even taking the fenders out because the leather could be dry and dangerous if not treated. I normally gently scrub dirty saddles with warm water and a splash of Dawn dish soap, or even Murphy’s. Saddle didn’t look super clean before you oiled it. Another tip is to use a step 1 leather cleaner which is antimicrobial. There’s no harm in wetting the roughout leather and can even gently use a nailbrush, but this leather needs conditioning too. There’s some great leather conditioning products on the market now, and we have found Tack Butter to be really good because it’s organic and doesn’t make the saddle greasy. Spray leather soap is best for the roughout or suede. Two or three thin coats with drying in between is far better than one heavy coat. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching leather come to life with a bit of elbow grease! Looks like you’ve got an older Billy Cook, which was much better made in those days. May even have been made by the man himelf. They will be able to tell you if you give them the serial numbers. 2016 is the model number. Way to go, girl!

Well done! There is something therapeutic about bringing old tack back to life.
You done a good job, the next time you clean your saddle start with saddle soap ,soft bristle brush, clean very well then wipe down with a soft cloth, let dry, use neets foot oil, or a conditioner of your choice. Just some suggestions, very good job.
Neatsfoot oil is great for dry leather. Just make sure it’s pure neatsfoot and doesn’t have preservative in it. The preservative will rot stitching.

My saddle was the same way when I bought it. I had to take the fenders off and oil them over and over until I could get them to lay flat.

You did a great job. It looks so much better. The only thing I would add, is to pull the stuirrup leather out enough to check the condition of the leather where it runs around the tree. It is the place it wears the most and where most likely to break, besides the top of the latigo.
Great point, ratfan! I would also remove the front conchos, lift the seat jockey and check the riggin. On a saddle that old, the riggin attachment would be a big concern. Actually, the riggin a concern on any cheap, production-line saddle.
That saddle looks amazing now. I did this to a saddle and it was very satisfying seeing it come back to life.

Black Rock is the best thing to use for softening leather. That’s about all I use it won’t darken the leather. I own and operate a new and used tack shop in Lexington KY
Lovely work! Just a tip, you should oil the rough out as well. I know it is weird but as it is leather it will get dry and break off if you don't. (Speaking from experience as a western gal)
I wasnt aware you cn oil it. I have a saddle that is entirely rough out. 😂
Oiling rough out will discolor it. If you can oil from the back, that will keep it supple, but if you oil the top it will darken.
It will also smotth rough out if you oil the op. Kind of defeats all the hard work/

What a job! Amazing how the rough out livened up again! I loved using neatsfoot oil on my saddle to soften and then URAD to maintain. I brushed on the neatsfoot with a brush. Much easier indeed than a rag

Well done. The saddle is looking great. A product to look into for keeping the silver clean is Never Dull. Non ocix and doesn't stain leather. I found it handy for cleaning the silver lacing. A can lasts years.

Get some brown or ox blood shoe polish and polish it now the paste in the round can be awesome
I don't know if you put meatball underneath the bottom of the rough out fenders but you should and you could have looked out the the rough out on the fenders with just a wire brush going lightly will make it look brand new if it takes a little color off the writing it takes a little time but if you will take like a paintbrush a little tiny paintbrush like you paint pictures with you can darken that writing and make it look even better it takes a little time the little things are what makes the saddle look the best kind of like a truck you can see the same model truck with nothing on it then you can see this same model truck with all the trim and it looks like a completely different truck

Looks great, you can come and clean and condition my saddles anyway! Twist your stirrups and put a broomstick through them to train the stirrups into position. P.S. where did your red hair go!
Thanks for the tip! I am trying to get back to my natural color.....much less work especially with summer coming. Less coloring is a good thing I think. And it will be nice to be able to be outside and not worry about the sun fading my hair color!

I actually live Noxon 7 for my metal polishing. A soft toothbrush, little Noxon, and a soft rag to buff.
Just curious - why don't you use saddle soap? We used to use that on our boots.

I can't stand leather new because it puts a silicone type coating on saddle. Makes it look good to sell, but it will start flaking off.
Neatsfoot always darkens leather so if I use it, underside only. I like mink oil much better.
I'd recommend that anyone take a saddle that's not been taken care of to a saddle shop if you're nit able to strip it down and replace parts yourself. Have them replace riggin, latigo, stirrup leathers under the fender. It may save your life.
I wish I could find a billy cook or a martha josey for $400. Cheapest I find is $600

Don't know if it's the picture but it looks like it's missing the top have the saddle horn I don't know if people know this or not that when you replace the leather on the top of the saddle horn you can't just replace the leather on the top you have to take the seat up you have to take the leather off of the swells just to replace the leather on the saddle horn approximate cost $450 just telling you that in case anybody buys a saddle that the saddle horn is screwed up on it as far as the leather goes and you think you can just fix the horn you can't all of this other stuff has to be taken up and off before you can put leather back on the saddle horn
Toothpaste will shine silver just try a little on a spot c if abrasive ..if not use tooth paste no flouride..5 min buff...

Gosh, really don’t like the finished saddle. Much nicer beforehand and just needed some tlc.
Well yeah the saddle clean up good...but anybody that was good enough to win a world championship and let his saddle get away from him is not a world champion and let his saddle get in this condition is a piece of shit and the championship he won did not mean anything to him in the beginning if this was me the saddle would still be in my house in my den to win a world championship is the greatest thing in the rodeo biasness and it would mean anything to me the cowboy that won this saddle did not deserve it...
Maybe it's original owner died and the family didn't care ....
