CANDIED YAMS | A Sweet Thanksgiving Side Dish Recipe

  • Candied yams add a comforting Southern flair to your holiday table. Sliced yams are coated in a buttery, sugary, spiced glaze, and baked until beautifully caramelized. It's one sweet side dish that will have everyone going back for seconds!
    Candied yams are different from a sweet potato casserole which often has marshmallows on top. But I personally love the sweet, syrupy glaze! It's simple, sweet, and spiced - making it hard to stop at one bite. So if you need a new potato dish to add to your Thanksgiving menu this year, you can't go wrong with this classic candied yams recipe.

    FYI, the molasses in brown sugar does add a small hit of iron. So, brown sugar is a little bit better than white sugar, especially if it's dark brown sugar, which contains more molasses than light brown. For those of us who are anemic, every little bit helps. This recipe sounds delicious! I'm thinking it would be tasty on carrots, too. 😊

    • @Downshiftology
      @Downshiftology  Před 6 měsíci +4

      That's true, but that's also why I like adding the molasses on its own to recipes! In addition to the fact that it just tastes good, haha. Hope you enjoy these candied yams!

      Same with my mother. What she did was make two stuffings. A traditional cornbread with minced celery and onions in the bird for "normal" people. Then a more adventurous dressing casserole with oysters, mushrooms and chopped bamboo shoots.
      Don't say yuck unless you've tried it. It's an East Coast thing. 😊

      @@mimiscountrycooking1607 oyster dressing sounds divine! My ex-motherinlaw made the very best spaghetti I've ever had to this day and I never asked for the recipe. But I remember she said that she used to be an airline stewardess and it was the airlines recipe that she never forgot. I know she used chianti wine in the sauce. I should try to replicate it.

    to my understanding yam is a much wider group of tubers, completely unrelated to sweet potatoes, which are actually related to a lovely flowering plant, that americans fear, as it is, for some reason, invasive over there. it's called "morning glory". I wish it was a bit more invasive where I live, cause it burns up on the sun by end of may, and then there are barely few flowers until september when it comes back. a bit. however, in lamerica, yam is used to refer to sweet potatoes, so, over there, there's no difference, they are the same thing. actual yams, that are completely different to sweet potatoes, are primarily eaten in africa, and some in asia. ube for example is a yam popular in japan, which gives foods distinctive violet color

    I bake mine, then scoop out the flesh into a bowl and add lots of butter, some cream, a spoon of maple syrup, and I beat them into whipped yams. Absolutely delicious.
    And they look very pretty on the table.

    So this is basically Camote, maybe just a healthier version lol because us Indigenous people from Latin America add a ton of syrup to it. This looks way healthier and more fragrant. Will be trying this and I hope it isn’t better than my moms because then I’ll have to tell her a white woman made the recipe lol and that won’t end well for me 😂
