The last few years I competed, we adapted all of our training to gear. I couldn't bench 400 in the shirt I never wore in training at 07 Worlds, but only 6 months later, after all bench training in a shirt, I hit 540. Dave is spot on.
He still used anabolics. Not that that's a problem, I'm js, he openly talks about it in a recent video that came out when he claimed his meds to the doctors when he tore a pec
The thing is, everything evolves. Obviously Louie Simmons had a successful approach to training. Because Dave and other veterans of the Westside “school” ask these questions, they have evolved the training methods further. Just as their disciples will continue to do.
Its funny i never thought you guys were in there with gear on, i always had a feeling it was completely raw cause of the way westside was described back in the day.
They trained their dynamic squats in briefs, which to me at least feels similar enough to full gear that I don’t need to wear full gear in training. I also only wear a shirt once a month. In Dave’s day, the gear wasn’t nearly as advanced as it is now so they didn’t need as much practice in it
@Jordan M that's what I thought regarding the skill aspect, if I squat beltless it's the same as with a belt I just won't get as much stability. Squats with and without a suit might be two totally different lifts and therefore can't expect the transfer over. I don't know, never done equipped lifting, just sleeves and a belt for me
Jordan M it probably would’ve, but they still got fantastic results doing it that way. Kenny Patterson and George Halbert were putting up massive benches only using shirts once or twice per training cycle
Omne Obstat it simulates the strength curve but it doesn’t simulate the technique or skill. For some reason, on paper, west side did everything incorrectly and still somehow managed to succeed
That couldn’t be further from the truth. Westside started by taking neighborhood kids and making them world record holders. Chuck V, Kenny Patterson, George halbert, Matt dimmel were all from Louie’s neighborhood.
The ones with the so-called "best potential" are/were the ones that work the hardest. Whomever does that (ANYBODY) will net good results. If you're not one of those......you sure as shit aren't worth taking.

Can anyone be a powerlifter? Serious question..can someone build the mental, physical and love to do it? Or are powerlifters like the fellas that go to Westside barbell born to do it.
The problem with training for powerlifting is that it’s monotonous and it’s more taxing than people expect. When you’re putting everything into executing a lift perfectly to comp standards even on volume work, it gets tiresome and sometimes boring. If you’re constantly motivated by gaining strength and being the best you can be in that discipline then powerlifting is for you. If you’re the type of person who gets bored by the same repetitive work and expect results to come in a matter of weeks. Forget it.
If you've stepped on the platform and you've put up a total then yeah you're a powerlifer. You don't have to be in gear or train a certain way. It has been 4 years since I've competed or even had an interest so who knows whats changed in this sport.
I was pleased to hear that he "seems" to approves of lifting without a belt for the most part. Now that Im training martial arts I hardly ever were one, for sport specificity reasons.
As a casual observer, isn't using bench shirts and suits against the point of strength training? Surely it is to see how strong the human body is? Might as well allow bionic arms
Absolutely not, using gear is all about putting more pounds on the bar than your body can handle, so say average guy has a 225 max bench use a bench shirt get 315, move forward and average guy now benches say 295 - 300 use a bench shirt and get 390 maybe 405 the goal is to get as strong as you possibly can with out equipment, using gear wether it be a bench shirt, squat suit or deadlift suit is like a peek in to the future but ultimately it's the insane drive to add even five more pounds on the bar that pushes people do do it
100 correct especially in strongman it should be pure raw, strongman is the most natural strength sport in the world, it man again heavy weight like from the beginning of time, it should be natural. A Tee shirt shorts and trainers ban everything else including chalk
Strength training - kinda (context dependent) Powerlifting - not at all. The sport of powerlifting isn’t necessarily about who is the strongest (though strength obviously helps). It’s about who lifts the most weight. Wearing a bench shirt, squat suit, wraps, belt all allow you to lift more weight which is why all the top competitors will wear wear whatever equipment their class/fed allows.
The Culture has been destroyed by all the micro breakdowns of everything. Btw gear is for dipshots. If the shirt gives you 375lbs The shirt is lifting 375lbs. What's the point...
SOMEONE HELP ME OUT HERE: AM I UNDERSTANDING IT CORRRECTLY? So they just threw the shit on before the meet. That's insane. I never noticed that in the old training videos. No wraps, no belts, just good old fashioned steroids and maniac training and then on the day of the meet you throw on the super suits? fuck. No wonder now IN 2020 they are getting so much out of the equipped canvas gear because they are training the lifter IN the gear now.
Raw didn’t exist from like 1975 til 2010(ish). Part of the reason a lot of the raw ATWR stood for so long - there were basically no opportunities to break.

The fact that they didn't even check to see if the shirt was going to fit before meet day is insane. You would never see that in today's equipped PL
It's not insane, it's lazyness really.
