I'm 64 years old and growing up all my clothes and toys all came from Kmart. As a fat kid I saved 27 cents of my allowance every single week to walk to Kmart and get a SUPER SUB with ham. I have great memories of Kmart. Glad my son got to experience it before it went away for good. This video make me smile :) Ty!
Back in the day we had Shopper's World and there was another Topp's I think. Then Shopper's World. I'm 75.
@@jill3686 I remember a place I think was called Woolco, S&H Green Stamps and JC Penneys but that's it :)
Got to love those subs ànd that big bags of popcorn delicious 😋
I remember how much candy you could buy for 25 cents back in the 60's. A quarter was a literal gold mine for a kid!
As a 80s kid, I have nostalgia for Kmart. Ours was right next door to a Chuck E Cheese, and I mean one of the old Chuck E Cheese restaurants that were big with an arcade, huge dining area where the animatronic music show was, etc. There was a "maze" under the animatronics that kids could go through. It was more like just a long tunnel from what I could remember lol. Man, the 80s were the best as a kid.
Celebrating 55 years of Kmart Australia, with our first store opened in Burwood, Victoria in 1969! Now with 325 stores across Australia and New Zealand and almost 50,000 team members. From humble beginnings our products have found its way into over 90% of Australian households. Peace out.
That's awesome.
As a sophomore in high school, I worked in the K-Mart cafe back in 1983. Fun times.
My grandma used to take me to kmart and we'd have lunch in the cafe, I remember all the wood paneling and orange windows you couldnt see through
My company was a manufacturer for both K-Mart and Walmart in the 80's and 90's. The difference in quality standards between the two was astonishing. Walmart would advertise the same item as K-Mart at a much lower price, however they were made to an incredibly lesser standard than K-Mart's item. I've spoken to others in different fields who sold to both companies and they said the same thing.
K-mart was the stuff here in Australia when I was around. I was born in 74 so Kmart was always there all my life. They sold the commodore 64, amiga and everything else cool. Records, CD's and everything else.
The first K-mart in Miami, FL opened and all us locals went in to check it out. There was an impressive assortment of winter coats and boots. The hardware department had snow shovels and gas powered snowblowers. The sporting goods department had snow skis and ice skates. I could go on. It turns out that K-mart corporate headquarters had a master list for everything that needed to be stocked for new store locations and no one with any common sense stepped in to stop it. Some of the stuff was sent back north and some was sold at up to 75% off. K-mart lost to Walmart because of incompetent management.
Those prices are 100% real. Maybe that was very early 80s or late 70s, but I remember just 2 or 3 dollars could get me a good amount of food or candy as a kid lol. Having a 100 dollar bill used to be a big deal, and it was a lot of money.
One day my, in the late 1960's, my father showed us a brand new hundred dollar bill. We were in awe!!!
I started laughing when they said how many stores were opened in 976. In 1975, when I was one, we had to move because Kmart bought several properties to build a store. My parents were renting, but the financial incentives helped them purchase their first home.
II am 48 years old. I remember growing up in the 80s in the 90s and I still love going to Kmart, especially going to the concession stand and get the popcorn and the ices😀
You really do consistently have some of the best content on the internet Mr Boyd.
I am still trying to wrap my head around the octopus cemeteries.
I was preteen in the late 70s, right now I feel so old
I was a teenager all the way through the 80's and watched Woolworth and Kmart both disappear in my small city when Wal-Mart showed up.
Yeah man. Born in '82. Nostalgia overload.
Garden City Kmart Ford and Middlebelt, Westland Kmart Cherry Hill and Wayne Rd The stores were 4 miles apart. We frequented both!!!!!
I remember kresge.Loved that store and cafe.
Born in 81, Kmart has some amazing sales and deals on things, especially toys like Micro Machines, GI Joes...etc. I loved it.
as a 70s baby, I totally remember going to Kmart and 3D growing up before we had a wallmart. I remember kids used to taunt other kids that their mom's bought their clothes at kmart at the blue light special. haha
Yeah used to love K-mart as a kid and looking through the Sears catalog at the toys.
My mom worked for Kmart when I was in high school (late '80s early '90s) they still had a Kmart Cafe and they had the best baked apples! Never have any as good sense!
I bought my dress for Senior Prom at Kmart. I also bought my ankle length wool coat with faux fur trim for winter there at the beginning of my senior year of high school. It had a silky inner lining to keep it from irritating their skin.
Kmart was my first job in high school . One thing that made it great was that they sold a decent variety of wines , some by the gallon , and wine coolers . The retired people loved that stuff and would line up about a half an hour before opening , I think it was Sunday mornings when the new sale ad went live to buy up all the bargains . I still have a couple of Kmart stock certificates from their profit sharing program lol .
My mom and her best friend went to the first K-Mart, in Garden City, Michigan, when it first opened in 1962. I took a picture of them at that location during the store's final week, when it was going out of business. 🙂
They had great sales every week! I loved it!
Always went there as a kid in the 80s. Slushies, Easter bunny was there in the restaurant around Easter and we’d get breakfast. And the looking for the blue light special every time we went.
Yeah bro. When ever we went to Kmart, my parents would leave me in the toy department while they shopped. I kid you not. I would stay in the toy department (which was 2 aisle btw) i would stay there for what felt like hours. Just looking at He-man and GI Joe, and Godzilla toys.
Shout out to KB Toy Hobby and Lionel Playworld and of course Toy R Us
I'm old enough to remember not only Kmart but also Kresge's. It was what they used to call a 5 & 10 store. The last ones I know of closed in the early 70s. Which is right about the time that Mr Kresge was opening up Kmarts everywhere. And the last Kmart in the city I live closed about 2009 or something.
I worked for kmart a few years after high school in the late 80's. Worked unloading trucks(great way to get in shape)was a fun place to work. They paid you in cash every friday so you had to walk thru the store with a wad of cash....nobody ever made it without buying something. They also had a cafeteria with a nice breakfast. I remember when fear hit our store when this new place was opening nearby, it was called Walmart. That store I worked at I still pass it sometimes and it's just an empty storefront, a bit sad. And something you would never see today is that every Male employee was considered security and if a shoplifter was seen a code was called and every guy had to run to the front of the store and we chased the person sometimes for blocks along the street, crazy times.
We loved going to kmart deli for those ham sandwiches you get 5 of them in a bag we ordered 2 of them and had lunch the price was right ❤😊
One of my favorites. We Used to Have TEMPO.....!!! Also there was TG&Y... OTASCO... And GIBSONS......
K Mart ventured into home improvement stores named Builders Square in the 90's which helped out in it's down fall. When Lowes came into play it killed the Builders Square. I remember being about to get a sheet of drywall 4x8 1/2 for 1.50 on early bird specials there. I mostly remodeled my whole 2 store house buying from there in the early 90's.
I remember going to Kmart to buy my 12, 16 and 410 gauge shotgun shells and I was just a kid. I wish I still had those guns especially that for10. It was a real beauty side by side break action with dual trigger housing. anyway, I remember Kmart was a regular part of my life. That’s where I bought my first set of tools to work on my first car.
I'm 64 and I grew up with K Mart. I loved their sub sandwiches and their toy department.
Glad you got to see this...!!!
I’m so old I remember Commodore 64 😂
My best memory of Kmart was when I was 6, my dad got us kicked out of the store. During the back to school time, they had a special if you bought a 12pk of Pepsi you got a free pack of notebook paper, with a limit of 5 per customer. Well dad filled up the buggy with 10 packs and when we got to the register he gave me money to pay for 5 then he paid for 5. The lady at the register refused to sell it to me. Dad argued that I was a customer and I wasn’t buying anything with any age restrictions. Yeahhhh, we were asked to leave….but we got the 10 packs of Pepsi and the notebook paper. 😂
this is fantastic! what a great trip down memory lane. i watched the Frontline documentary of Walmart they began the overseas manufacturing we see today :(
Cousin managed a Kmart right up until they finally closed the doors. Always wild the stories she would tell.
Really solidified how I am not qualified to be in retail or deal with humanity in general.
I don't really remember much of my childhood - but I think Kmart was pretty much the only place that sold icees and I loved them.
maybe one day all the cool stores will make a come back - kinda like vinyl did - and retro clothes :P
You know that’s a fantastic idea! Like a retro Mall! Ppl would do that! Set one up in each town smaller versions of the old stores and restaurants. There was an ice cream parlor when I was a kid that was so wonderful ppl still talk about it years later. Everyone met up there.
Kmart is still alive & thriving here in Australia 😊
I remember kids would clown on each other if their family shopped at K Mart. The irony was pretty much all the families have shopped at our local K Mart. I remember a kid was making fun of me and said attention K Mart shoppers was something I must hear everyday. But how did he know that announcement?
I remember when Kmart came to our town in the mid 70s. I bought a nice Timex watch for $10. It ran for 30 years.
Kmart, Woolworths and Hills ❤️
I used to go to K mart with my mom just for the potatoes and gravy, because it was so good. Yes, they had a restaurant in K mart.
I remember growing up and on Saturdays my parents would tell me to get dressed up nice we're going to K mart and I got so excited
It was the go to store especially Christmas time.
loved K mart here in canada. we also had zellers. then walmart put them out of business
Man this brought back so many memories lol
I remember going with my mom to Kmart. If I was good, I'd get an icee and we might get lunch there on a good day. I think all of my clothes as a kid came from either Kmart, Mervyn's or JC Penny.
Montgomery Wards was the first for me.
We had our Kmart up until like 2015/2016 and I HATED when it shut down. We have a Walmart but I don’t always want to go to Walmart and I always did my Christmas layaway there and got my meds there. It was a sad sad day. 😭
Yeah, in the 70's K Mart and Gold Circle were our primary places to shop; the Blue Light Special and Garanimals! When at K Mart, I knew if the Blue Light was flashing, good chance I might get a Hot Wheels because Grandma could justify coming off the $1.00. At Gold Circle, straight to the back by where they processed Lay-a-ways, to scope out the cool duds, Garanimals made it so kids could easily put their own outfits together.
Also, soak in the old style of advertising and marketing VS today. Back then, it was up lifting and promosing to meet needs as a member of your comunity. Today, it's rapid-fire shock and awe provided by cartoon characters and someone who comes off as a meth addict, pillhead, or wino.
I still remember those Italian subs from the Kmart Deli.
Was my favorite place to shop!!!!
Thank you
Bradlees and Zayres were my stores in the 60's and 70's in Massachusetts.
When I was young (70s) We called kmart came apart.
Woolworth was a great store and there is a very interesting documentary here on CZcams about the store and family. "Woolworth's The legacy of Five and Ten Store Empire"
in the 80's first thing you did at k Mart was getting that bag of popcorn 🍿🍿
7yrs old in 1975 - K Mart Cafe eating turkey sandwich smothered in gravy...whaaat?!
We had two K-marts on St Croix, now it’s just one.
Woolworths opened a store similar to Kmart called Woolco. They didn’t last long.
For Kmart to have over 2000+ stores and the top retailer, then to lose it all, should be a case study for bad management at the top and what not to do. In the mid 80's the CEO thought it was a good idea to diversify into other businesses and Kmart bought stuff like OfficeMax, Builders Square, a large book store, all of them failed and Kmart was stuck with expenses and lost their attention to the core business. Meanwhile WM, Khols, Target, etc, were on the heels while Kmart was fooling around and not keeping up on their main business model.
Kmart was a different kind of store. It was a a good store. I bought some nice things in that store. 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
I loved K-mart. Especially the sporting goods section where we would get all our camping, fishing and hunting supplies. Being a kid in the 70s, camping was the only vacation we could afford and K-mart always had everything you could want. So sad to see it go, along with Woolworths and Montgomery Wards, (or Monkey Wards, for short, as it was called). I HATE Walmart and Target!
The blue light special in the 70s
@8:00 me and the NES ☺️
1986 🤟 we're the same age
Did anyone else have a restaurant in their Kmart?? We’d eat there every time we went.
10:14 those were the prices of things back then.
Those cafe prices are right!
Kmart's the child of of Target and Walmart
I wish we had a Time Machine 😊
I remember their kids shoes in the 80s lasted maybe 30 days
2013 they had a thing with the comedy Gown Ups 2. Not long after that. We had one but the owner of the whole building strip of stores wanted someone else in it, so they closed there. More because they wanted to rent the space for more money. It failed though and not only did they lose money not having K-Mart there they cut off the whole section K-Mart was at to open air.
Plus they had layaway. And photo setting
I remember when the k car came out and I entered a contest to win one. Probably in 84 or so. I got a Mickey Mouse shirt there that I wore to Disney. People loved it and kept asking me where I got it. On the downside Kmart had the worst bathrooms.
Kresky and Sam walton are the 2 people that let the entire world shop before the internet became the world's largest mall
I remember when the local Kmart closed. The parking lot is now being used as refinery worker parking.
Recently!? I an surprise that it took so long for K-mart for to close down. Only block buster took longer to close.
Got my first BMX bike from k mart
Kmart had more stores than what he is saying. there were multiple kmarts in every Canadian city.
Agreed. Kmart had multiple stores in every North America town I ever visited. When ppl had to travel for work back in the 90s (that was common for a lot of jobs back then travel was cheap) first stop was always a KMart just to grab some essentials at a reasonable cost
Does anyone remember after this it became Super K Mart? Life was soooo much better back then. Sometimes I think about them days & I get depressed by how so much has changed. Life was golden in the 80s - 90s. Definitely wish I could turn back the hands of time. I'm 39 going on 40 this yr born in 84. I seen a channel on CZcams talking about & showing all the old stores when I was a kid like Toys R Us, service merchandise ect. It's was Soo cool as a kid back then, it was magical compared to now.
Riding the silly horse thing out front!
Who remember when they had the popcorn and lucnhmeat sandwiches with lettuce and mustard
Walmart ruined it. And gave nothing better and still doesn't. I remember Kmart having the ham, lettuce and mustard sandwiches in a plastic bag resembling a tube. They were amazing. Got the handheld games. Tracker keepers of course. Making a comeback.
I'm a big guy k mart always had my size in clothes I miss it
Imo, there was a BIG difference in KMart and Walmart. KMart was my favorite.
Come on now, our Kmart closed when I was 13 & I'm 47 now. The only thing I remember about Kmart was, they sold real hand guns.
Yes, the prices are real but that was based on the fact that the minimum wage was like $2 per hour.
Long Island k mart
Miss them sub sandwiches those were the best even though it was lettuce overload
Kmart in 90. I was arrested at 13. For stealing street fighter 2. Lol. They days. Scared me so bad I never stole again.
loved Kmart in the 70's and 80's.. in 90's, before walmart killed it off not so much. that our kids won't get the reference in movie "Beetlejuice"
That hedge fund guy gutted K Mart. They have videos on him. He started selling off all of their owned brands that made it necessary to shop there. Craftsman was one of the big ones.
Who else had Simon. 😂😂
Kmart was good in the 70s and 80s..in the 90s the prices were expensive..and got worse and worse..1990 was the last time I shoped there
MrLboyd, Did you go to Jonathan Law High school?
K-Mart was across the street from that school and Students parked their cars in K-Mart parking lot.
If you went to a different school, I find it very interesting that the same thing was going on in a different place 🤔
Edit: I guess I found my answer at the end!!
It's weird that you experienced the same thing I did!!
K-Mart was a great store, so was Bradlees and Caldor!!
I remember Superman flavored ice cream it was the best can’t find it anywhere nowa
9:42 I mean a hotdog and a drink at Sam’s is 1.70 now. They normally are lost litters.
11:11 I don’t remember the pizza place being in there
