    Todays video is video 3 in the series. And we cover the topic of Old Brushed motors used to race with, what to look for , and how to identify what is what. But also how to rebuild and modify one to make them go faster, and borderline cheating! years ago that is... :)
    These were motors we used back in the mid 90's

    Back in that time, stock was defined as 1 wire wrapped around each pole of the armature 27 times with fixed timing. Modified motors had adjustable timing you could have single double triple or 4 wires the more wires the broader the powerband fewer turns around the poles would give more rpms

    I just got a box of these and I'm wondering what the yellow and blue things which I think are capacitors for? And I got an ESC like that. And what did your dad do to that motor to make it faster? I am trying to figure out what I can do to these old vintage motors and if I can swap out the parts to make it faster?

    • @ChrisPatrickRC
      @ChrisPatrickRC  Před 3 lety +1

      The capacitors are to help with power draw, esp larger mod motors. As for making them faster. Polish the coms on them. Replace bushings with bearings. And better brushes and springs. I just dont know if they still make those old parts anymore.

    What,no D4,Monster,or CRC motors? Those are what i have a bunch of from the 80’s,90’s and early 2000! I have a few green machines too from then because they were $35 and worked great for drifting in the 90’s,they are worthless for anything else!

    Great video. Most of your "more cost effective" RC's today still come with brushed motors. I think brushed motors are awesome. There is so much hype about brushless. However where is the logic in taking the same vehicle that is brushed and changing out the motor and ESC to something that costs the manufacturer maybe another 5.00 and the the car jumps in price by 100.00. It just shows how stupid consumers are. My question is I have a 380 brushed motor car. I want to make it go faster. I want to just swap out an better motor. So I just buy a 380 motor that is like 40,000 rpm? the car came with a chinese 380 motor so I'm thinking its probably around 16,000 RPM...what would you suggest? do you know of a name brand 380 motor that is really fast? Thanks for any help!

    • @ChrisPatrickRC
      @ChrisPatrickRC  Před 4 lety +2

      The 380 platform is the killer , you dont have many options.
      Tamiya sport tuned 380, 12$ or traxxas titan 380 18t for 18$ , or a ready cr380 crawler is your main options

      @@amw4736 if you want speed I'd go with the traxxas, it's a 18t motor. The tamiya is a 27t. Your motor you have now is probably a 32t ish. There all cheap enough, traxxas motors are just hit or miss. That's my only hesitation with traxxas.

    How do you tell the poles postive or negative ?

    • @ChrisPatrickRC
      @ChrisPatrickRC  Před 3 lety +1

      Last i remember it doesn't matter. It all depends on how the motor is installed and if the motor is going backwards then flip the wires or change it in your radio. But some can lids are labeled.

  • @michaelchristensen6884

    Any idea if a single winding versus a double winding is faster or has more torque?

    • @ChrisPatrickRC
      @ChrisPatrickRC  Před 3 lety +1

      In theory, key word is theory, a single winding motor will use less power to run the same speed as a dual winding armature , but without a way to fully bench test it, I can't 100% say thags correct but if I was guessing I'm about 80% right.
      It takes more energy to spin dual winding motors. Also single operate quieter as well.

      @ChrisPatrickRC  Před 3 lety +1

      @@michaelchristensen6884 directly soldered is the best option. We use to use deans plus to make it more convient when racing to swap motors or pull one out to do maintence. But a direct soldered connection without plugs is your best option.

    how can you tell if a brushed motor is stock or modified??

    • @MyNguyen-hz9qz
      @MyNguyen-hz9qz Před 2 lety

      by just looking at the motor and not testing it

    • @ChrisPatrickRC
      @ChrisPatrickRC  Před 2 lety

      Newer ones have a tag on the rotor where the windings are. Its how they can identify them without tearing them apart. But the copper windings is what makes the turn. Of it its only wound 5 times. Then its a 5 turn motor. The higher the turn the more resistance your adding so less power draw is consumed.
