There's something always special about seeing real live steam locomotives in action at an exhibition. These Gauge 1 locomotives may be models but they're also real working steam engines. They don't just turn on and off with the flick of a switch like regular model trains. They take time and skill not only to build but also to learn how to control. Seeing this incredible layout at the Warley Exhibition in 2023, it was an absolute pleasure to see so many incredible models making their way around the layout, entertaining both young and old.

A truly impressive display. It takes some doing to operate any kind of live steam. I wonder if the V2 is a 3-cylinder, actual Gresley loco. Good show.
I'd never thought of that before. I guess I always assumed they're were exact miniature replicas of the real locomotives but I guess some might be more simple. Thanks for watching 😃
Yes, I think that would fit in most lofts...!
Not every model railway is designed to fit in a loft. Many prefer to have larger scale like this outdoors in the garden or alternatively they don't have a layout of their own but are part of a club that does. Remember, with live steam enthusiasts in particular, a large part of the hobby isn't just running trains but also getting enjoyment from tinkering with the loco and maintaining it.
That said, you could fit a small gauge 1 layout into a loft if you really wanted too. You might not be able to have the big express trains but certainly the little B4 with a few wagons would fit. Thanks for watching 👍

Thanks for that! Personal favourites are the Stirling single, GWR City with clerestories and the Spam can! Too much of a rich mans game though (sadly) to participate.
I wouldn't be so sure. I would imagine there are clubs and societies you can join that welcome new members even if they don't have locos of their own. Or alternatively find a very cheap secondhand loco and restore it working condition if you fancy a project. Thanks for watching 😃
With 3D printing, it is quite cheap to get into Gauge 1, and there are models you can print from the G1 3D Circle for free!
Really wish I could show this to my great uncle, he had a Hornby layout in the 60s (most likely) and I think he would love to see this. I also really liked that this layout was live steam and thought it was really cool, thanks!

I think i saw this layout at the Stonham Barns model railway show last year, when they were doing their first model show as they got the second one this year on the 24th next month and ill be exhibiting, its a damn amazing thing to see in person and the sound of the stock clattering over rail joiners is lovely, the sound fitted diesel locos also sound really loud and scale well

Gauge 1 live steam is fine for just going round and round, as many(not all) of the layouts over there are, but they're not very good if you want operations as many layouts in the States are .
It depends what you mean by operations. The vast majority of people who get into Gauge 1 probably do so because they want to run big long express trains, usually out in the garden. This layout breaks that mould by being setup both indoors and portable layout. But there is still plenty of operational interest that can be had even with express trains like these. It partly depends on the layout of course.
Bare in mind as well that, at an exhibition like this, the operators jobs will be to keep trains running round the circuits as often as possible to entertain the crowds - most of whom just want to see a train go past rather than see anything particularly complicated. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Yes, for exhibitions it's perfect, and I get the part about Gauge 1 being more for outdoor than indoor, but a lot of the outdoor/garden railways here still mimic the indoor setup with yards and sidings as well as the long main lines capable of handling long trains...I probably should have mentioned the part about being perfect for exhibitions. I was more referring to those that operate their outdoor railways like an indoor one with lots of switching/shunting of freight. As always though, it all depends on what the owner of the railway wants their line to be.

Someone should devise a way for DCC controlled live steam, with functions like whistle, stop, start at signals / stations etc
Why DCC though? There are RC controlled live steam locomotives that already do just that. Adding in digital control would take away from the analog nature of this side of the hobby. Thanks for watching 😃
My comment was made because I saw how the people running this layout were having to change settings on the loco as it passed by - I did not know about the radio control options that already exist! @@ThatModelRailwayGuy

Wouldn't you, just watching a train go round and round and round and round? Well, you get the picture. No scenery, no stations, just trains going round and round and round and round. Goodness, I do feel tired.
Probably because this was filmed on a Sunday afternoon at the end of one of the busiest exhibitions in the country. Having done shows myself I can tell you from first hand experience that if you get a spare moment to sit down and take a break, you absolutely take it because you're exhausted. And this isn't exactly a typical layout to operate. Thanks for watching 👍
