The Panasonic BGH1 is easily my most favorite video camera in the last 5 years. 4K res at up to 60 fps, 13 stops of dynamic range, a selection of truly beautiful lenses available, allows to power, remote control and stream all over a single Ethernet cable. You can slave the cam the cam to a Timecode- and Genlock-master. You can transfer configurations between cameras and save them on a PC… gosh I could ramble on and on about it. It’s just a so nice piece of tech!
Finally the box camera is again back in fashion.

Honestly, I kinda want one. I recently upgraded from my GH4 to a Sony A7R4 as a dedicated stills cam, and while I know the sony'll do good video, I've been using my GH4 as my dedicated video machine since then. I'd love to be able to move over to a little box cam to do that very thing.

Have you tried any of the newer Z Cam flagship bodies? They would be a much better comparison. All of the buttons and "flaps" were updated. Although I would disagree that the exposed ports feel temporary, that's how every cinema camera I've personally used is.

When will we get a stills focused cube camera with a detachable grip and a waist level viewfinder/display on top?
I've been making two of my own, one similar to a topcon re super and another similar to a Pentax 67, but they're limited to the new raspi camera module/sensor (in both cases I replaced the c mount with a custom metal micro 4/3 mount and locking mechanism that's part of the chassis) and platform. It's not a terrible sensor for hobby video cameras but it's closer to a Pentax Q in terms of sensor size/specs for stills...I'd really like the same idea but in at least M4/3 to cut back a bit on the crop factor. That's not even going into the software, thankfully I've been writing image processing software for fun for years. It's been fun adding basic things like histograms, focus peaking, over/under exposed striping, etc. My goal is to have an optical viewfinder, simple RGB OLED for histogram, mechanical controls like I have now, and a mechanical display for lightmeter. External display through HDMI to view images/make system level settings changes not available on the physical dials; in short taking a step backwards making a device that's more a pain to use to get worse results than a budget mirrorless...that's progress if you ask me lmao.

How can there be no monitor?! Even a tiny postage stamp screen. I can't imagine why someone would but this over the BMPCC6K. But am open to arguments. Have at it boys.
Cause it's a box. Literally the only reason I can think of, even over a bmpcc4k. The box-iness is, honestly, nice... I'm just not sure it's nice enough to be the main feature on a camera that costs almost twice what a GH5 costs. If they were about the same price, I'd probably go for the box though.

There are no XLR or mini XLR audio jacks on the body. The inability to record balanced audio is a fatal flaw. Seems they have relegated the M43 for amateurs. If you want "pro" level stuff, get ready to pay multiple thousands and carry excessive weight/bulk to gain the features that come with full frame Panasonic cameras. Blackmagic just have the same/very similar sensor, XLR mini jacks, better codecs and a better editor for less money in the BMPCC 4k.
Keeping the size small means some connections must go, but the XLR1 unit that Panasonic make can work with the BGH1 and give dual XLR inputs with full control and doesn't cost much at all.
The BGH1 isn't just a cinema camera to be built into a rig, it's a drone camera, a live streaming camera, a multi cam live studio camera.... I'm sure drone pilots will appreciate smaller weight and size for the cost of an XLR input on the body.
@@FuzeDzn True, XLR for drone might be a bit much, but how many are really going to flying a drone with an external camera? 1% of the possible market? And, there are a lot of other solutions if that is what is aimed for. I have the external audio adapter and it works well, but is way too fragile being based on a hotshoe. BMPCC 4k uses mini xlr and that works great. I think they missed a huge opportunity here. Some, like me, would never buy it without balanced audio.
You can put the Panasonic XLR adapter, which is excellent, in the hot shoe. Actually a very decent solution, no cables, adapters, batteries, good preamps!
@@nauticfilms used the Pany XLR adapter on a job today and almost recorded the GH5s audio because it slightly slipped out of the hot shoe. Also, it has to be added and removed every time you use it and it can break off. On board XLR is much more stable. No excuse for not adding it.
@@peternavanac9310 This is crazy, I wrote that last sunday and two days later I had exactly this happen to me for the first time ever - the shoe not being all the way in, almost ruining my audio. On a paid shoot. Ouch. I caught it because I was wearing headphones (which of course we always should when recording critical audio - in theory.) Also now I know to check that little green LED on the adapter.

Shoulder-friendly (Amira, FX9), cube (C300iii, this), and two-handed friendly (C70, P6K) are kind of the three shapes. I want more bolex-shaped cameras!

I don’t understand fully the point of it, if you make anything there will probably be someone on this planet that wants it. I know there will be SOME customers, BUT I don’t think people will be flocking to it and I don’t think it’ll be a huge money maker for Panasonic. I would hope Panasonic would be working on something a huge cluster of customers want... a GH6, something with a glorious global shutter and slightly higher megapixels maybe like 32 megapixels to make it an amazing stills camera, a high res EVF, maybe internal RAW for the ultimate video shooter. That smaller sensor makes it easier to manage heat they should be able to make leaps and bounds in certain aspects to compete spec wise. When the S5 was released AFTER the A7S3 and the R5 but the S5 is the only one NOT on back order because it’s so unpopular. That means you aren’t exciting your customers. Wake up Panasonic! Before it’s too late! The GH5 crowd is moving on, it’ll be harder to get them back once they buy into a new system. The R5 can do raw internally, (I know it overheats) but imagine smaller sensor, with the Lumix metal body they should be able to get rid of that heat no problem and give us raw internally. Also a messed up company like red that makes some unreliable stuff they even put a screen on their Komodo 🤣 why couldn’t Panasonic put a screen on this? I mean even if you put it on a drone don’t you wanna confirm the record mode and stuff?
