    Also something to note around Mighty Car Mods: we are normal guys and are not trained mechanics. We like to make interesting car mods and show you how we've gone about it, but we can't promise that anything we show you will work for your particular car, or that you won't harm yourself, someone else, your car or your warranty doing it. Please be safe, be responsible and unless you know what you're doing, do not fool around with very serious machinery just because you've seen us make it look so easy. Talk to a qualified mechanic if you are in any doubt.

    In America the perfect anti-theft device is to have a stick shift car. Chances are the thief can't drive one. I don't know if any studies have been done on it, but my guess is that 50-65% of the country can't drive a manual transmission.

    • @TheRussianGiraffe13
      @TheRussianGiraffe13 Před 8 lety +24

      +CigarBGuitarefx thats what you'd think, but im sure someone who steals cars for a living at least trained themselves for that situation

    • @QbidMusicandMore
      @QbidMusicandMore Před 8 lety +31

      No-one around here "steals cars for a living." In fact, outside of movies, I've never heard of anyone "stealing cars for a living." Car theft is mostly a crime of opportunity here. If they see a stick, chances are they will move on to an easier opportunity.

    • @TheRussianGiraffe13
      @TheRussianGiraffe13 Před 8 lety +4

      CigarBGuitarefx most of the time yes, its all about opportunity but some do it for a living

    • @LeprosyNachos
      @LeprosyNachos Před 8 lety +13

      +CigarBGuitarefx Chop shops are real... Engine selling, transmission sales, and so on.... most of the time your car will get towed instead of movie style hop in cross the wire style.

    • @QbidMusicandMore
      @QbidMusicandMore Před 8 lety +2

      I know that, but this guy was making it sound like gone in 60 seconds style car thieves is a real thing and that there are people "making a living" off of stealing cars. Don't get me wrong, there are probably people that do, but they are probably few and far between and they wouldn't be interested in Kia minivans. The type of theft that you are talking about doesn't even involve starting the engine, so chances are neither a stick shift or a kill switch wouldn't deter it. Most car theft though is a crime of convenience.

    Even better if your car has it's own dedicated fuel pump fuse, Just add a kill switch to it instead so the thief might actually think that it has a flat battery or an engine problem.

    • @chrisgraham2904
      @chrisgraham2904 Před 2 lety

      A kill switch on the ignition system is generally better than one that disables the fuel pump. Without fuel the vehicle will crank but won't start or will start and run for only a few seconds, but a thief can do a lot of damage to your engine by cranking your engine for five continuous minutes. You'll at least need a new starter motor.

      Taking spark away won't stop the fuel injectors from spraying normally. If the car isn't stolen and you go to start it up, now you have a flooded engine, or at least a bunch of unwanted gasoline in your engine oil. Kill fuel, if choosing between spark or fuel.

    • @kn520

    This is kinda true. There are some car makers (like Toyota and Chevrolet) that have what's called a Semi-Automatic transmission. Basically, you have a normal shifter, P-R-N-D-2-1. But you also have M. In M, you can move the shifter up and down depending on if you want to upshift or downshift. But, there's no clutch. So it's all electronically controlled

  • @chrisgraham2904
    @chrisgraham2904 Před 2 lety +3

    This one of the few videos that mentions the importance of soldering and sealing connections. The entire circuit you create must be bullet proof. Failure of the circuit not only causes your vehicle not to start, but can shut your engine off like a light switch while cruising down the highway. Loss of engine means loss of power brakes and power steering. Also, use a military grade for aircraft grade toggle/rocker switch rather than a cheap switch from Amazon. Use grommets when passing wires through any holes and armor all wires with wire loom.

  • @leckmich0815a
    @leckmich0815a Před 16 lety +1

    I did that with my 94' Ford also. But (as MKUltraProject suggested), I've installed the switch in the fuel pump wiring. It has the advantage that the starter makes some noise, but the car won't start. An idiot thief will think the battery is empty or something like that (if NOTHING happens, this could be suspicious...!)

  • @mightycarmods

    he's refering to an ACTUAL killswitch. you start the car, leave it in park, turn the key to a particular position, and remove them. if someone ties to jack the car without the keys, the car "kills" itself when they shift out of park. the car will only stay on if the key is re-inserted. police cruisers often have this, so the cop can leave the car running the engine w/o worrying about it getting jacked.

    A Better switch idea is to use the switches for the hi\lo beams switch in old trucks 1975 or older. the ones on the floor board, new cars don't have this and there easy to install. you can place them up underneath the clutch pedal high up close the firewall, so it isn't accidentally tripped. when you need to start the car you just tap it with your foot to connect the circuit and just tap it again when you get out.

    head gasket maybe? try checking under the oil filler cap and radiator cap for sludge, and check the radiator water and engine oil for oil or water in the wrong place

    @dougaholic very clever. but doesnt it annoy you that you have to go into your boot every time you want to start your car?
