  • in this video i demonstrated How To Measure Mains Un-Isolated AC Line Voltage With DSO Digital Storage Oscilloscope. Sometimes we need to measure mains live unisolated ac voltage voltages with oscilloscope. you must take special care while measuring voltages on the mains with any measurement instrument. The mains voltages are absolutely deadly because these have un-isolated supply. Measuring mains voltages with multimeter can be dangerous as well. but Trying measure mains voltage with oscilloscope is more dangerous, because typically oscilloscopes are are grounded devices that have the ground side of the probe connected to the equipment case. while making connection to mains voltage slightly wrongly can make a huge disaster causing short circuit, damage the probe, your oscilloscope or human injury.
    If you are trying to use a traditional bench oscilloscope that is powered up with main line volatge, ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR SCOPE IS GROUNDED BECAUSE THE GROUND IS THERE FOR YOUR SAFETY!
    1. in this best choice when we need to measure mains voltage with oscilloscope is to use a completely isolated oscilloscope like battery powered oscilloscope or scope-meter.
    2. if you need to use bench oscilloscope, then use an islolation transformer, in that case you can measure line voltage without any danger

    Thank you from Guatemala, I know that only theoretically,
    I saw an Englishman explaining the theory but he does not do the measurement in practice. Thank you again, you bolstered my confidence even though I theoretically knew it could be done. Best regards and God Bless you.

    You better use the isolation transformer to power the device under measurement and use the grounded power connected to the DSO (oscilloscope) as a security measure against Live voltage contacts, assuming you have a safety switch on your home power circuit

    Am I correct in saying If I am measuring 200-300V AC/DC in a circuit powered by mains via an isolation transformer (the circuit not the scope), It is OK to measure without isolation transformer on scope? Or will there be issues if the ground probe is connected to safty earth via the circuit in just the same way?

    • @HaseebElectronics
      @HaseebElectronics  Před měsícem +1

      it is much better to use 2 wire cable (line and neutral) to power on oscilloscope (disconnect ground)
      test mains voltage without any isolation. just take special care (not to touch test probe, even hi or low) or any other metallic portion of the oscilloscope
      or use isolation transformer to isolate the UUT
      or isolation transformer to power on oscilloscope
      THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT IS TO REMOVE SAETY GROUND OF OSCILLOSCOPE

    • @DaftyBoi412
      @DaftyBoi412 Před měsícem

      @@HaseebElectronics Yeah that's what I thought. I was asking as the circuit has a built in isolation transformer for L+N, but it is the ground return back to the scope and the clip connecting directly to ground creating a dead short that causes big issues if measuring a diferential signal not referenced to ground.
      I have an isolated diferential probe coming (more expensive than my scope! :O), but wanted to make measurements with my passive 100x probe before it will arrive. So as long as I'm measuring post rectification DC referenced to ground, and not measuring the AC diferential between +250V/-250V before the diodes (250-0-250 transformer output) I'll be fine. Mesuring posative 250-0 or 0-negative 250 is ok on the secondary side, but not +250-0-250- at either end, and not at all on the primary side of transformer without your sugestion or diferential probe.

    • @HaseebElectronics
      @HaseebElectronics  Před rokem +2

      good evening
      specially when measuring non-isolated voltage, the earthing pin in oscilloscope creates problem. so
      1. taking special care, we can apply power (Line and Neutral) to the UUT
      2, same to DSO (ground pin must be disconnected) so 2 pin plug is to be used
      3. while testing, never touch the BNC connector or any metallic part of the DSO
      4. connect oscilloscope test probe to reference point and poke the test probe very carefully
