- in this video i demonstrated How To Measure Mains Un-Isolated AC Line Voltage With DSO Digital Storage Oscilloscope. Sometimes we need to measure mains live unisolated ac voltage voltages with oscilloscope. you must take special care while measuring voltages on the mains with any measurement instrument. The mains voltages are absolutely deadly because these have un-isolated supply. Measuring mains voltages with multimeter can be dangerous as well. but Trying measure mains voltage with oscilloscope is more dangerous, because typically oscilloscopes are are grounded devices that have the ground side of the probe connected to the equipment case. while making connection to mains voltage slightly wrongly can make a huge disaster causing short circuit, damage the probe, your oscilloscope or human injury.
If you are trying to use a traditional bench oscilloscope that is powered up with main line volatge, ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR SCOPE IS GROUNDED BECAUSE THE GROUND IS THERE FOR YOUR SAFETY!
1. in this best choice when we need to measure mains voltage with oscilloscope is to use a completely isolated oscilloscope like battery powered oscilloscope or scope-meter.
2. if you need to use bench oscilloscope, then use an islolation transformer, in that case you can measure line voltage without any danger

Thank you from Guatemala, I know that only theoretically,
I saw an Englishman explaining the theory but he does not do the measurement in practice. Thank you again, you bolstered my confidence even though I theoretically knew it could be done. Best regards and God Bless you.
best regards and special thanks for your valuable comment
best regards and special thanks
You better use the isolation transformer to power the device under measurement and use the grounded power connected to the DSO (oscilloscope) as a security measure against Live voltage contacts, assuming you have a safety switch on your home power circuit
Именно так и надо делать. Оставлять осциллограф без земли плохая идея!
An excellent demo of measuring un-isolated AC line voltage with your oscilloscope. I enjoyed to the end. Thank you my friend.
it is my pleasure

Hello and thank you for this informative video. I have the very same scope and I was planning to check my un-isolated AC Line so your video id pretty helpful. You say that we should not touch remaining open connectors (CH2 and EXT TRIG), but what's the reason behind it? Thank you!

Sir please explain how to check high voltage supply of printer
Thanks Haseeb. If we dont have a battery scope, can we use a little 220v inverter to power the scope?
best regards
battery pack oscilloscope, or battery powered scope meter, or isolation transformer based oscilloscope, or inverter is also a good choice (if it have no common earth / ground at secondary side)
U always shares ur knowledge so nicely 👌
Thanks, a wonderful and precious explanation. Do you think is better cover with isolating cup the other free channels to safety?
Yes, absolutely, it is a perfect and super idea
@@HaseebElectronics Thanks for your answer that I really appreciate it. Your tips are very useful for my learning

@@HaseebElectronics Your Welcome!🙂

Am I correct in saying If I am measuring 200-300V AC/DC in a circuit powered by mains via an isolation transformer (the circuit not the scope), It is OK to measure without isolation transformer on scope? Or will there be issues if the ground probe is connected to safty earth via the circuit in just the same way?
it is much better to use 2 wire cable (line and neutral) to power on oscilloscope (disconnect ground)
test mains voltage without any isolation. just take special care (not to touch test probe, even hi or low) or any other metallic portion of the oscilloscope
or use isolation transformer to isolate the UUT
or isolation transformer to power on oscilloscope
THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT IS TO REMOVE SAETY GROUND OF OSCILLOSCOPE
@@HaseebElectronics Yeah that's what I thought. I was asking as the circuit has a built in isolation transformer for L+N, but it is the ground return back to the scope and the clip connecting directly to ground creating a dead short that causes big issues if measuring a diferential signal not referenced to ground.
I have an isolated diferential probe coming (more expensive than my scope! :O), but wanted to make measurements with my passive 100x probe before it will arrive. So as long as I'm measuring post rectification DC referenced to ground, and not measuring the AC diferential between +250V/-250V before the diodes (250-0-250 transformer output) I'll be fine. Mesuring posative 250-0 or 0-negative 250 is ok on the secondary side, but not +250-0-250- at either end, and not at all on the primary side of transformer without your sugestion or diferential probe.
Hi, I am looking to buy an oscilloscope for my use. Can you make a video what are the basic things we need to consider before buying the unit, means what frequency range and all related to scope
for normal commercial usage
we need 100MHz, Dual channel, 100GSa/Sec
from chines brands
Hantek
REGOL
Uni-T
OR
some branded oscilloscopes, you can select TEKTRONIX, HP, Wavetek, or some other brands
Excellent work big like
good evening, I wanted to ask if it doesn't matter if I connect the isolating transformer to the oscilloscope or to the measured device, the problem is that I don't have such a powerful transformer, so I would put the measured object in a normal socket, thank you very much for the possibility expressed
good evening
specially when measuring non-isolated voltage, the earthing pin in oscilloscope creates problem. so
1. taking special care, we can apply power (Line and Neutral) to the UUT
2, same to DSO (ground pin must be disconnected) so 2 pin plug is to be used
3. while testing, never touch the BNC connector or any metallic part of the DSO
4. connect oscilloscope test probe to reference point and poke the test probe very carefully
@@HaseebElectronics thanx
I have a question. Wy did they learned me in scool always plug the DUT and not the osciloscope into the isolation transformer to avoid this problem. Where is the difference?
Always always always ! When you connect scope probe ground clip to Anything. Stop and remember the probe ground clip is connected directly to scopes earth ground terminal....
I have seen videos where they remove the earth ground pin from the scopes power cord to isolate the scope from earth. This is not a good idea...
you are right.
but to deal with unisolated voltage , i shared a very very detailed video (video number 662) you can check it. in that video i explained all safety parameters and solutions
Awesome 👍
best regards
suppose my oscilloscope is powered up by isolation transformer.
Now if I connect the ground clip of my probe to the Live of the main supply and
the tip of the probe is connected to neutral, will that damage my oscilloscope ?
basically the isolation is subjected to isloate the oscilloscope from line and ground
oscilloscope will powered on by 2 pin cable. ground must be disconnected
for test purpose, now you can test any signal
Sir pl make video on pc based oscilloscope hantek 6022be. Thanks
Hi thanks a lot for this video. With a battery powered DSO with a limit of 40v I can't even use a 10x probe. could I use an step down transformer 240/24 (step down, I am not saying an isolating transformer, because I have a battery powered DSO) ? Does the transformer affect/disturb/smooth the 50 or 60hz signal? What about its armonics ? Thanks a lot.
Have you already test this in your videos ?
How to see the high voltage wave in the SMPS transformer
we can use 100X probe for more safety of the oscilloscope
Never have a scope Isolated from ground; best to use a differential probe to measure main or higher voltages.
you are right. the differential probe is superb solution but it is expensive, everyone cannot afford it
Hopefully price will go down, but I know exactly what you are saying! As technology goes up; unfortunately not the prices, and that now of components as well. Sad!
Salam M Haseeb, i am planning to purchase an oscilloscope, i hesitate between the Rigol and Sigilent 100Mhz. I need a simple to use with visible screen. Some reviews say Rigol is old conception. What is your advice ? Thanks
1. hantek - the best in Chinese
2. sigilent
3. REGOL
4. uni-T
above four brands are categorized by their quality
then branded oscilloscopes like
Tektronix
hp
wavetek or other brands are expensive
@@HaseebElectronics Thanks a lot !
Nice
thanks a lot
Can you please show a connection diagram?
Better to understand
we know measur 300v ac rms but What is the maximum dc voltage that can be measured here?
RMS = equivalent DC value. 300VAC RMS = 300VDC
So, if you connect the scope probes ground clip to neutral/ground and tip to line voltage, is problem ?.
if we apply 2 pin power to oscilloscope, and we don't apply safety ground to oscilloscope
that time if we connect probe to any wire (line or neutral) it will work normally
special care. we must take care that live voltage may appear in oscilloscope low side terminal
i will suggest to watch video number 662 for more detailed discussion on this topic
@@HaseebElectronics Yep, just watched it, Thank You
Our system was not have a grounding conductor equipment can i plug the dso in our system without using an isolation transformer sir tnx
KASE HO DOST
I have used a DSO 138 With a 10:1 probe. Scope is rated 40 v pl to peak. ×10 probe? 400 volt.
for DSO 138 i think it will dangerous to measure so high voltage
please ensure its specifications first
@@HaseebElectronics 40 volts peak to peak. I used a 10:1 probe for 240 volt. Worked on my pure Sinewave inverter. ( very nice AC waveform. On household electricity? A little dirty. On petrol generator? Disgusting. LOL.
that is awesome
you must use some high grade petrol to get purre sine wave 😂😂
@@HaseebElectronics that test was on my solar power system. Off grid. But the generator with a 300 watt load looks horrible! Inverter is a Giandel brand! Cheers. BTW. 4 deep cycle batteries help on keeping the fridge going in blackouts in Australia. Bad storms sometimes. LOL. Cheers
I was always told to connect the device under test to the output of the isolation transformer, not the scope...to prevent the scope case and terminals becoming full live voltage.
you are exactly right
it is just in that case, when we don't have power transformer for UUT so for DSO safety we can use isolation transformer for DSO
@@HaseebElectronics Ah I see. Thank you so much. Take care
How to measure more than 300V Rms with DSO?
in that case we need to use
high voltage isolating differential probe
DPB5150A
RT-ZD01
AP031
N1070A
TA044
SI-9002
P9000
Tektronix THDP0100 High Voltage Differential Probe
@@HaseebElectronics can just a basic 100x probe do the job?
100x is good but
for best safety
we must use high voltage differential probe
What about the earth pin in DSO and Mains earth pin?
while hooking-up to test un-isolated voltage, we must use isolation transformer and we must use 2 pin power (ground must be disconnected)
in this case the the DSO will float. so while testing we must take care for safety. Never Touch to the DSO BNC connector's outer shell, as it may expose to un-isolated line voltage
@@HaseebElectronics thankyou
Thanks for video teaching class , very helpful to me one thing to know that at the test bench the DSO to be isolated by a isolation transformer, as I work with so many inverter welding machines or various inverters or SMPS power systems, whether all the components are to be isolated, if so how much kva isolation transformer minimum required ,waiting for your guidance, thanks again, with regards
Is there any wrong comments Sir, as every time I see Your response, and always be very ready to rectify myself in my job work ,but now a days I never find your response, never mind Sir,Namaskar
