    “This study noted PTSS (PTSD symptoms) in nearly half of ABA-exposed participants, while non-exposed controls had a 72 percent chance of being asymptomatic. ABA satisfaction ratings for caregivers averaged neutral or mild satisfaction. In contrast, adult satisfaction with ABA was lower on average and also tended to take on either extremely low or extremely high ratings. Exposure to ABA predicted a higher rate and more severe PTSS in participants, but the duration of exposure did not affect satisfaction with the intervention in caregivers.”

    People keep asking me why I’ve refused to let my son go to ABA. Well it’s clear. I never went and I’m fine. I won’t let my daughter go either. It’s damaging. We are a proud ND household and we accept people for who they are.

      As both the mother of an ASD kid and ASD myself, I believe strongly that ABA is a disgusting way to treat kids. It horrifies me to think of someone trying to use obedience training to brainwash him into acting the way they want him to, not the way he is. So yeah, let's call ABA what it is... brainwashing.
      But that being said, "I turned out fine" is never a good reason to oppose a therapy 😂

    I live in the UK. My daughter is autistic (she’s 5). She was non-verbal just over a year ago and was acting like a child several years younger than her actual age. I used a BCBA for a few months to help design a program. I do all of the ABA therapy myself and now also design my daughter’s program. Thanks to ABA, my daughter is now toilet trained, able to talk in short sentences, makes great eye contact, has lovely facial expressions, a sense of humour, can write her name, draw pictures, plays with her sister, plays with toys functionally, can count and has great self care skills. All that in just over a year! My only regret is not starting ABA sooner. Two doctors told me that there was nothing that could be done to help my autistic child. What utter crap! The NHS don’t recommend ABA because they can’t afford to supply that kind of service to all these autistic children…so they rubbish ABA instead… the state/education system do know it works though because they are discretely using it in SEN schools here but calling it something else (PBS).

    I asked my psychology instructor who works in ABA about this. She explained that ABA is meant to be used only for stuff like if someone won’t wash or if they won’t get a haircut to the point that their hair is a matted mess. She had to treat an autistic patient over six months for both of these things. That’s it, no changing of autistic behaviours. Now, I’m autistic and I think if ABA is used to help someone look after their physical health then it is worth it. Punishments are not condoned in ABA and it is seen as malpractice to use anything other than rewards for positive moves in the right direction. Now, I could be wrong but that’s my current conclusion. What it is used for and how it is used determine whether it is okay or not. If the alternative of no ABA is the persons physical health deteriorates then they won’t be alive very long and that’s a tragedy. Obviously their mental health needs to be supported by psychologists too but not everyone can afford all that…

      That’s not the only thing ABA is used for. It’s used for everything, including teaching masking. One girl I know has a brother who does ABA. The therapist tried over and over again to induce a meltdown! Why? To see what the cause of the meltdowns are. To me, that is crossing a serious line into abuse. Meltdowns are some of the worst psychological torments. Intentionally causing one is abusive!

      Oh, also look up “Judge Rotenberg Center.” This is the only place where it is legal to use torture to control behavior. Some people there are hooked up to electric shock devices so they can be easily shocked throughout the day. This is based on ABA (though most ABA is not that extreme).

    I’m an autistic person who wasn’t in ABA growing up, my family used OT, speech and social work for some of the things I needed help with. I recently discovered ABA both through the neurodivergent community and as a psychological theory. I got a job working as an RBT (registered behavioral technician) and my take as an autistic non binary man is that ABA works for some people but not necessarily for others. I completely understand the criticisms though thankfully the clinic I work for doesn’t seem to be how things were in the past. I completely understand criticisms from my fellow neurodiverse people and in some parts I can see why classical conditioning can be bad for some people. ABA in my opinion works for some people but not necessarily for others. This is all from my own experience both as a late diagnosed autistic person (I was diagnosed at the end of high school) and as someone who started working in ABA as an RBT, if anyone has other insights please feel free to add to the post

    One of my coworkers just graduated with a degree in psychology. She asked me one day what I thought about ABA. I said "Well, it's not quite as bad as gay conversion therapy." Turns out she didn't have a high opinion of it either, and neither did her professors, but she'd had a classmate who worked in a facility that used ABA and was a vocal supporter, but that didn't sway her.

    My son has ABA therapy and it has really helped to improve his communication and and also got him out of nappies. I don't know what ABA looks like in other countries, but here in the UK there is no punishment for doing things wrong and it is absolutely tailored to my son's specific needs. We wouldn't have given it the time of day if we felt anything negative about it.

      Y’all are more advanced in the UK. In the US, that’s not the average experience. People are developing severe trauma. I’ve elected to not let my son do it. And guess what? I did the work. Without the punishment. Without a stranger. I’m glad it seems to be helpful and appropriate in other countries.

      I’m autistic and I briefly worked for an ABA inspired program. They worked with parents to alter parent behavior which in turn altered the child’s behavior. I loved it when I went through it with my son. However, when I got the job there and saw how other counselors and parents were interpreting the program and what they were doing to their children, I had to leave. It was heartbreaking and traumatizing. When I brought it to the attention of the director I was told that I just misunderstood ABA and these other people were doing it correctly. I had to go. They taught parents to ignore the behavior they didn’t like. So you can imagine all the wild ways parents would implement that advice. It was devastating to watch.

    • @nattybking
      @nattybking Před rokem +2

      @@BreezyBlank there is definitely no punishment involved in our experience, there is positive or negative reinforcement, but the negative reinforcement is not a punishment. With the example of toilet potty training, the negative reinforcement would be the child being wet/soiled and it feeling unpleasant if they were to have an accident.
      Me and my husband both had training and so did a member of staff at the nursery. The BCBA comes to assess progress once per month, she works with the nursery staff and looks at the data that has been taken since the previous visit, then she spends a couple of hours playing with my son using ABA techniques. Most of this is to introduce new challenges for my son and new skills/methods for the nursery staff. She then writes a full report.
      My son is non verbal and due to start school in the next week or so, thanks to ABA he is now out of nappies and using AAC software on a tablet to communicate.

    ABA IS GREAT FROM SOME PEOPLE AND NOT FOR PTHERS. There is no right or wrong answer as every one on the spectrum is vastly different and have different needs. I’m so tired of this. I’ve done so much research for my son and my brother because of people saying parents who send their kids to ABA shouldn’t have them anymore or that it’s abuse. It’s not abuse if it helps your child. As a parent you know when your child is happy and when you don’t like something. You can tell if they had a good day or a bad day off of no verbal cues. They will also let you know if they don’t like someone but it’s the parent’s job to listen to their child in situations like this whether they are non-speaking or speaking or an in between.
