  • This video is about my Lilac Bonsai. The pot got damaged this past winter and I've not repotted it since 2017 when I first dug it out of the ground. Someday I hope I get some beautiful blooms from the tree. Or at least one big one. This is not a Little Miss Kim variety, so the flowers will be a bit out of proportion.

    Great presentation. I have many varieties of Lilac in our backyard. This July, I have collected four new plants separated from the mother roots, and it seems all are adjusting in the containers. Hope it will be a new project for me to start bonsai! Your project will surely help me.

    These will bloom as bonsai, but the bloom clusters are smaller than a ground planted lilac. It didn't bloom right away once in the pot, but after 2 or 3 years a few blooms appeared, then more and more as the years progress. I pinch back the new growth in late winter/early spring, even when in bloom. Light fertilizer. Almost full sun in the Bay Area of Northern California.

    In the first film in this list, you show a tree with a broken pot. If you get pots that are fired at a high enough temperature, they become vitrious like glass. If the clay remain porous, it will absorb water, then if you live in an area where it freezes, even just briefly, the pots can break in the same way the plumbing in your house can burst if it freezes during a storm and power outage in the winter.

    My dad is rebuilding his grandparents house this summer and they have an ancient lilac and it will have to be dug up. I'm thinking about cutting off most of it and putting it in a pot and see what happens.

      I have a very big one that I dug up last year to pot up too. Should be doing that in the next week.

      Try to use a Miss Kim Lilac if you can for smaller leaves or a Korean Lilac.

    Lol. I picked a lilac up from lowes or home depot last night. The main tree was dead, but there was 5 other trees and many suckers between them. I separated and potted them all this morning, if anything i only expect the smallest (1 foot tall, nearly rootless) plant not to survive. But knowing lilac's will to live i doubt it. Its like willow or plumeria. Very well unkillable.

    I want to start a bonsai from my grandparents lilac. It has a lot of little bushes growing beside it. And I’m trying to make some of those into bonsai.

      They grow fast, so fun to play with and experiment with. Good luck and keep me posted on your successes and discoveries. I just walked outside today in the sun and 45 degrees and saw this very tree almost completely decimated. Take a peek at the large one I worked on last year.

      @Dave's Bonsai I look forward to it! I just got a 'little miss Kim' and I intend to make it a bonsai, but I'm new to bonsai.

    I'm considering starting my first bonzai from lilacs. We have a bunch if lilacs in our yard. Any tips you'd be willing to give to help start?
    Should I start from a seed or just a sprout from a bush?
    I'm also in Minnesota so the climate should be good for it.

      Hey Andrew. Of my two lilac bonsai, the larger one is doing much better. For some reason, the smaller one is just growing like snails move. They like a lot of sun. My large one grows a ton of suckers from the base and underground roots, so keep them trimmed up to allow more growth to other branches. I've also dealt with a fair amount of fungus with mine for some reason so I really do my best to water at the base and not the leaves. I'll show un update of my two soon in one of my next videos.

    Did you get any blooms this year (2021)? As an apartment dweller I'd love to have a lilac bonsai that blooms!

    Do you leave your lilacs out all winter in the bonsai pots? You said the weather cracked the first pot....do you cover them with anything like straw or mulch or tarps to keep that from happening? I live in Montana, we have wild, unsettled spring weather. The lilacs are just starting to bud out now, April 16th. I just dug up some cuttings this afternoon. I don’t think lilacs like being wintered inside.....but I hate losing pots. Might try a mica pot. What has been your experience with wintering outside?

    • @DavesBonsai
      @DavesBonsai  Před 4 lety +1

      Caryn, The pot that broke was not an expensive one. It was one of my original pots and had a few years of wintering. I think the MICA idea is a good one. I do leave them outside and I have them in a clump of other trees to kind of protect them. I put a few bags of yard waste stacked up to protect from the Northwest wind. I have not covered them in mulch yet, but the Snow usually puts a nice layer of protection for then. Keep me posted on how yours are doing. My leaves are just opening up now. April 18th. But we have had a seek set back with temps in the 30's for highs and teens for lows.

    Do you take your lilac Bonsai indoors for the winter? That one had buds. Don’t they need to go dormant? Is that why you haven’t gotten flowers?

    • @DavesBonsai
      @DavesBonsai  Před 3 lety +1

      I keep my lilac outdoors. I've had some fungus issues in the past, so I wonder if it keeps it from budding flowers. I'm expecting flowers next spring which will be 3rd year since in bonsai pot. I'll keep you posted.
