Excellent one! We need more excavations as well as preservation of ancient sites. On a different note it is quite clear that Ashoka was already Buddhist at the time of the Kalinga invasion. King Kharavela of Kalinga avenged the Kalingans years later.

The king of kalinga was also known as the king of the seas. Kalingans were the seafaring people. They had trade and cultural relation with south-east asian countries. Kalinga was expanding across the seas. They spread Buddhism and Hinduism in many Asian countries. Even today also one can find many similar Odia surnames/names in Srilanka and countries like Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia.
Festival similar to Odisha Boita Bandhana utsav is celebrated in Thailand and Cambodia in Kartik Purnima. It was surprising to see a Boita (large size boat) in the Cambodian Boita utsav, which they also called Boita. ..
It is clear Kalinga was so prosperous and powerful, the reason why Ashoka wanted. The Mauryans won after several defeat.

We had many ancient monumental temples here too in Bengal, but all were destroyed by the Irani-Central Asian Turki Muhammadan Invaders, but I'm glad that Orisha survived with its ancient temples and monuments even tho Orisha was also invaded by an Invader, Ashoka, but Ashoka's expansion was not anti-Dharmic or anti-polytheists.

There is some emotional aspect as well. Chandragupta Maurya could not win over kalinga in his life time . He was routed by then Odia warriors many times . Even Ashoka was defeated twice by Kalinga warriors, he won on his 3rd attempt . Odisha remained a relatively independent state through out its history. Odisha used to be ruled by its son of soils when muslim invaders ruled today's Bengal and Hyderabad area. In many instances, Odisha rulers like Gajapatis defeated then Bengal muslim rulers and bahamani sultunate rulers to save its culture. Even today you will find very minimal Islamic impact in Odisha. We boast of our rich cultural heritage, our architecture, our language and of course our bravery. Even before India got its independence, Odisha state was carved out due to efforts of its son of soils and in that sense, Odisha was the 1st linguistic state. These are history and don't come from any Leftists cookbook.

heir of Bindusara, the Kalinga Kings were supporters of his brother.

@@DrPrashantGajbhare . It seems you have no proper knowledge in Indian history . Certainly , the teachings of Buddhism and Jainism had some impact on the downfall of the Mauryan empire , as the successive rulers after Ashoka could not withstand the repeated foreign invasions . While Chandragupta took Jainism and spent his retired life in Karnataka , Asoka took Buddhism after the Kalinga war and stayed away from wars . That had weakened the Mauryan Empire gradually and eventually the last Mauryan king Barhadhrada was dethroned and killed by his minister Pushyamitra Sunga and Pushyamitra established Sunga dynasty somewhere in 2nd Century B.C.. With this , the great Mauryan Empire came to an end . Pushyamitra Sunga was a devout Brahmin and was an ardent critic of Buddhism .

Battle of Kalinga was against the strongest fort of Hinduism in East India. Kalinga was a unique feudal caste led kingdom where government was run by people considering lord Jagannath as their king. Ashoka wanted to destroy Hinduism by destroying Kalinga and spread Buddhism by force. In his pursuit to do so he surely destroyed Kalinga but Hinduism survived. Even the Buddhist priests that were under Ashoka's helm denounced him for the violence as they did not agree with his approach of spreading Buddhism with violence.

The so called modern & Marxist historians of British era belonging to Calcutta & Madras universities suppressed the great history of Kalingan dynasties to uphold the pride of their own regional histories of Gupta & Cholo dynasties. The Kalinga was the last state to be conquered by mourya emperors, it was the last state to be conquered by Moghals & the last state to be conquered by East India Company. Such a powerful state was divided by Britishers into three parts thus weakened the state. Northern part was put under Calcutta presidency, southern part under Madras Presidency & western part under central presidency at Nagpur there by creating an identity crisis with in the state which is still prevailing among it's people at present.

Actually there are several theories on this. What you said matches Sri Lankan theory. But the most reliable ones are the Rock Depicts. And the Rock Depict near Mahabodhi, the place of enlightenment, says he visited the place after 10th year, which was 2 years after Kalinga war. So this is the source from which historians conclude he got converted after Kalinga war.

Ashoka changed after Kalinga war is a myth. And sending his son and daughter to srilanka for Buddhism is also a lie. Excavation in various srilankan sites confirms that Buddhism was already practiced well before. Surya Roy has done a lots of study on kalingan history especially on maritime part and well explained the omission of lots of kalingan rulers from history books. The boats architecture the traders the concept of mother boats and feeder boats and lots and lots of unknown facts.

Just a point of correction : Ashoka was already an ordained Buddhist before he embarked on the Kalinga killing mayhem. He fought the Kalinga war as a Buddhist. We have to remember one this is that it was advantageous being a Buddhist as that consolidated his power over his empire. A crazy person, Ashoka would go one erecting his edicts everywhere across the subcontinent, commanding what people could do, could not do, going in the absolute micro details. Tell tales Signs of craziness and being an absolute control freak. Ashoka is mostly a western interpretation or a british interpretation of an ancient king who was good to a fault, docile and blah blah blah.... British wanted Indians to be like that.
How many know Gautam buddha's last food was a pig , most probably he died as it wasn't cooked properly. Gautam Buddha liked eating Non-Veg... Now try telling this to modern day [indian] buddhists....

I can make a more logical video than urs and answer ur question of why ashoka hit at kalinga. It was much for the pride and power of mauryans, his grandfather ambition was that, he want to fulfil also his powerful ministers advised him to do so. That will result in a akhand bharat.
