"Is this typical of their sound?"
"Or is this out of the box for them?"
Yes
YES!
They are very much progressive metal band, with jazz or swing breakdowns in most songs. Even elevator music.
@@mikeyem1562 And circus, don't forget circus
U2/PROG/BLACK/JAZZ/MIX
Perfect answer
There is no "typical" for this band. I could play you 30 snippets of BTBAM songs and convince you that they play 30 different genres of music. They're nuts, Blake's nuts, it's all nuts.
I'm diggin' it
Best description ive heard, every album is completely different from the last
You nailed it.
BTBAM's album "Colors" still gets regular play here at my house. That album really showed Blake becoming the monster player he is today. I think Blake is an amazing composer of drum parts, innovative, and stylish in his approach.
I saw them for their 'Colors' tour. One of the best shows I've ever been to. Played the entire album, and it was perfect. For the encore they started playing 'Laser Speed' as a joke and then went into 'Selkies II'. That will always be one of my favorites.
How about Colors II?! Fucking great album! Combines the best from Colors, Parallax and Misdirect. Blake, once again, is an absolute beast on the drums.
@@Koffling youre forgetting its got tons of pieces that have the feel of Automata
Love it!
This is probably my favorite of your videos due to the sheer overwhelming amount of visible confusion. Their EP “The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues” is an incredible display of their composing power. What a chemistry!
Well tmrw's video is even more confusion. I can promise you that!
They are what I always wanted Dream Theater to be
wow!
No DT is perfectly fine how they are...no need for two of the same.
This is his probably his least difficult song he plays. He is probably in the top 3 best drummers in the world in my opinion. Definitely my favorite. This song is not what most BtBaM songs sound like. It really kicks up to their normal style at the end tho. They're very well rounded, they can and will incorporate any genre into their heavy music.
He's not anywhere near one of the best in the world. There's a million other players who can run circles around him. He's definitely GOOD (more proficient than me for sure), but it's a big world, and not knowing what's out there puts an artificial ceiling on your playing. Here's one example of a legitimately world class drummer: czcams.com/video/OzbIrrXKhx4/video.html
@@DavidHimmelPerforms idk bro some of the stuff he plays is insane. His life solos are absolutely jaw doing. He is definitely up there.
@@gh2471 I’ve watched his live solos. I’m not saying he’s not proficient/good at what he does! I am saying there are other drummers who can do more/better.
@@jonboy7879 if you’re a world class jazz drummer, yes it does.
And, while I wouldn’t put him in my metal top 3 (probably reinert, Garstka, and a time between hoglan and mickelson), I’m def not saying he’s not a good player. There are just loads of guys who are objectively better, especially in jazz.
@@jonboy7879 If you think a world class metal drummer is the height of what's possible on the drums, you're putting an artificial and false cap on the possibilities of my favorite instrument.
“Tropes” has never been a word associated with BTBAM!
I bet Brandon!
Seems to fit, for some unknown reason! 👍🏼👍🏼
Would to believe this is one of their more mellow songs? Andrew did have that grin of enjoyment most of the video, glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks Mike!
Between the Buried and Me is a very eclectic band. This is definitely one of their more jazzy tracks, but even their heavier tracks have a lot of styles thrown in. And as you'll notice, even on this track there are strong metal influences in the middle and towards the end of the song.
Nice!
FINALLY! Blake is AWESOME!
Im sure everyone has already said this, but btbam is very well known for going wayyyy outside the box in terms of style and doing all sorts of crazy instrumental stuff.
Blake is absolutely the best drummer alive in my opinion.
BTBAM are one of those bands that are genre-less. They play what they want and are all incredibly talented. Their albums are entire pieces of art (with Colors being a standout/fan favourite) that perfectly blur lines and limitations of "tropes".
Definitely check out their other stuff. Even from a purely "academic" perspective, these guys are phenomenal. I frequently use them in my "jazz and metal are more closely related than you think" argument.
Also, my obligatory "you should check out ClownCore" shall be inserted here as they are another "lol wut's genre?" band/duo that is mind blowing.
Keep up the awesome work dude. Cheers
Louis Cole has the fucking sauce, my god
9:03 you have now unlocked an understanding of BTBAM
Blake is definitely top class!🤘🏻
No doubt!
Between the Buried and Me has brought joy to me for half my life now. They make the music of a life well lived, expect the unexpected. Definitely Dream Theater influence especially after touring with them years ago. Big regret missing that show
His drumcam from their live Telos performance has great sound.
FINALLY! YES! THE BEST!
love that he has that one crusty old sabian ride
Between the buried an Me is fackin great, you were wondering if this type of writeing is something the band does or if it’s a one off, this style of writing is just a Tuesday for these guys Lol these guys write crazy orchestrated music that will melt your brain. You have to check them out live.
If you like this sort of metal swing, check out Diablo Swing Orchestra. They've been doing swing metal for a very long time.
Blake is the fookin MAN!!!!
Yup!
Blake😃😃👍awesome. Well done andrew🤣👍
Thank you so much!!! I've been waiting for Blake to pop up! I guess I missed your first one. Blake is TOP NOTCH. And a super cool guy. I'm one of the lucky few that won one of his painted drum heads he does. He even sent a personal card from him to my 5 year old daughter who loves them....well one of their songs. Great drummer and awesome person.
Awesome Cam!
Great reaction, Andrew! Maybe my favorite so far!!
You should react to Blake Richardson drumming Augment of Rebirth...soooo good!!!
There's a cool play through where does a full e.p of there's without the vocal track. Clocks in at something like 30 mins over three parts.
Fantastic drummer.
Between the Buried and Me can do anything they want!
I bet!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums
My favorite Blake Richardson performance
czcams.com/video/snGxAUBMZHY/video.html.
Love BTBAM seen them live 4 times. Fantastic
Very fun, I loved it thanks 👍
Finally Btbam!
They have been taking fusion/prog to a whole different planet since before The Silent Circus
also dan (the bassist) has a jazz fusion group called trioscapes that blake plays in every now and then
Don't forget about nova collective. Same drummer as trioscapes and Richard henshall from haken.
@@MrWiggnuts i legit was just listening to that! good call
Blake's style is everything
Great!
Blake richardson is for sure one of the top drummers.
Yes!
"He's a bad man, he is a baaaaad man"
Blake Richardson is indeed a bad man. This man is absolutely bonkers on the drums. He tracked one of their best albums in two days.
Btbam Loves to experiment and play with genres and styles usually they have one particularly out there song on their albums and this was one of them I'm glad this surprised you! Hopefully i can drop another request sometimes because I feel Blake Richardson is one of the less appreciated greats in drumming and his repitoire is nuts!
More on the way Jordan!
You always react to the best vids, props to your patrons!
They pick amazing stuff! Truly
I like that you feel his tightness. It's the one thing that always blew me away seeing Blake live. I haven't seen him since around 2015 but I saw him at least a dozen times, and he's tighter than ANY other drummer I've EVER heard, the like of Phil Collins and Terry Bozio, even Virgil Donati doesn't have that incredible tightness, the way some people have perfect pitch, he has the perfect pocket.
Blake has got a full playthrough of their 3 track EP "Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" on CZcams. There is also the band performing their LP "Parallax II: Future Sequence" in it's entirely, professionally recorded(audio/video) at the Fidelitorium which you might be able to find for free somewhere on the internet. As for BTBAM, their sound jumps all over the place. They were originally a metalcore band, but pretty much since their album Colors, they've been a powerhouse in Progressive Metal, taking inspiration from all sorts of different types of music.
Thanks for the info Eric :)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Oh my god you did Augment of Rebirth!
This is amazing!
Glad you dug it Jordan!
Blake is one of my unreachable drumming role models.
Amazing drummer.
I love his Parallax play through.
my favorite drummer
I would highly recommend his playthrough of "Lunar Wilderness". Definitely shouldn't get blocked, and probably BTBAM's jazziest song.
Thanks for the tip!
Yasssssssss
Yup!
From what I know of Blake, is that he learned Jazz as a kid when was taught drums.
That'd make sense :)
Half time thing in the middle/end and the very ending thing are so damn good. Reaction on point
definitely one of blake's more restrained drum playthroughs. this guy is a monster.
Something to note with Blake's drumming in this song: He accents his blast beats in a way that not many metal drummers do. I feel like lots of metal drummers could benefit from that influence.
Also, If you want more metal swing music, check out Diablo Swing Orchestra. They've been doing metal swing for years.
*Blake
@@buckfuttler2877 lmao i have no idea why I wrote Dan, thanks
@@liliIiliIilil Dan Briggs maybe? lol
Thanks for that!
I like the way he has his setup. The two floors nice and tight. I am getting a new Tama kit in another month or so, similar sizes but with one less rack tom. Can't wait. It is a little weird to hear a shuffly up tempo on a kit that sounds tuned for metal, but hey, no one can say it ain't original....
Yeah you nailed it. Full blown modern rock tuning playing jazz/shuffles!
Love it
Blake is one of the GOATS imo. I'd recommend Blake's play through of Obfuscation from 2011. It's incredible
Good choice , underrated band
You should react to Blake Richardson playing "Telos" live. It is live footage of him with the studio version overdubbed. But it still works out perfect. And that song describes BTBAM's sound much better.
Blake is one of my favorite drummers and BTBAM is one of my all time favorite bands.
Happy to see that you enjoyed this one !
I hope to get to it. A few of his have been blocked though... :(
You opened Pandora’s box here. Blake Richardson is amazing you need to check some more of him out
I hope to do more Cal!
He came onto my radar in 2007 when he was when I discovered him in Glass Casket on MySpace. I knew then that Blake may be one if the most talented drumers of my lifetime. If you have a chance to listen to any of their albums. You can hear there's something special about him
This was the first time they really got into the jazz genre but they’ve been dabbling in a bunch of different genres for years, all centered around their rock/metal roots.
Shit!! Blake Richardson on a reaction video. Much respect! Love Blake’s playing!! Appreciate your approach to reacting and your laid back style! Much love from Texas!!👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
“I did not expect that!”
Welcome to the World of BTBAM! Enjoy the ride!!!😜
Its not a full drum video, but you should check out BTBAM's new song "Fix the Error", 3 guest drummers take turns soloing before Blake does his drum solo. Mike Portnoy, Navene Koperweis, and Ken Schalk. Complete with cowbell keeping time.
For whatever reason, got a total Warner Brothers cartoon vibe.
You should check out Blake's playthrough of Augment of Rebirth or Obfuscation next!
Thanks Taylor!
Second obfuscation!
This imo is one of their worst to start the band off with. Especially Blake. This song doesn't do him justice at all.
It's more like a fun song
Those are the best sounding toms!
Yes Sebastian!
6:01 I was crying laughing.
This is just a really fun song!
Agree Kelly!
9:42 Got me 😆
Its kind of a paradox. Yes it's a a one off thing but also their style is to just use any and all musical styles, often in one song lol. I'll still always love the blue grass break in Ants of the Sky.
Specular Reflection has a really good drum cam that they had remastered visually recently!
I saw them perform this song one time after that album came out and it is incredible live.
FYI, the bassist from BTBAM, has a few other projects that are equally impressive. The 2 main projects being Trioscapes and Nova Collective. They both feature the same drummer, Matt Lynch, who also played for the band Cynic.
If you check either of these projects out I recommend:
Nova Collective - Dancing Machines
Or
Trioscapes - Digital Dream Sequence (drum play through)
Nova Collective is great.
Was not aware Nova Collective has BTBAM's bassist. Pretty cool! Discovered them late last year after "Cascades" popped up in my Spotify queue somehow and as soon as I heard the first few seconds I was like "hold up I need to listen to this album" haha
Btw... That looks like a mapuche shirt you would buy in pucon or villa rica
La compre en Peru! En un mercado :)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Cool !!
Check out Obfuscation from BTBAM. It’s phenomenal showcasing of Blake’s playing!
9:05 : "I don't even know what'll come next. Could be anything."
Yep... yep... that's BtBAM... :)
Great drummer, very great, you must listen to ´´ automata 1 and 2’´
Thanks David!
I love Blake. Probably the most diverse modern metal drummer unlike some that play blast beats and fast for the entire song.
"He's a bad man..." 😅😅
HAHA
You must see Larnell Lewis fusion drum cover
Thanks Peter!
They've always been under that progressive metal umbrella. They're so much more especially since the great misdirect. They're maybe one of 5 bands that I strongly suggest their discography.
El tono del bombo suena increíble.
Yes Jorge!
Definitely try to look at any of the three songs off of Hypersleep Dialogues. Honestly, his best composing might be on all three of those songs alone.
Colors. Listen to it. Straight through. Then listen to every other album of theirs. Straight through.
Basically, between the buried and me is heavy prog metal with harsh vocals (most of the time) but they play around often with different genres. Matt Greiner and his band loves between the buried and me and you can hear some influences in some August Burns Red stuff, especially the playing around with different genres. I would suggest Matt Greiners Playthrough of the song „Majoring in the minors“ since you also wanted to check his band stuff out.
czcams.com/video/VNdiJnzlTbQ/video.html
Dang
So you've never heard Hot For Teacher? It has double bass shuffle type beats all over it. 😅
Always wanted to know what a metal drummer would sound like on something like swing.
Please, please listen to "Lay your ghosts to rest". It's insane. And you'll love it.
Thanks Gunnar!
copyright claims suck! i guarantee blake himself doesn't give 2 shits. he super down to earth. and yes blake is the definition of adhd drummer. genres only interest him for a few measures!
so...BTBAM back in the day was very blast-beatey, techy metalcore. then they went on a tour with Dream Theater way back when and all hell broke loose haha
BTBAM can very much playing anything. The only "trope" you could really throw at them is they are very technical.
Having said that, they'll probably release the most basic thing imaginable & it'll still be brilliant.
Hello Andrew, I like to know, which kind of music do you prefer?

Their music is constantly changing. They very rarely play the same riff more than 4 times in a row and if they do they'll change the drum pattern or if the drums stay the same the guitar riffs change or they'll add keys. They are constantly changing everything. Their songs range from like 5 to 15 minutes long and they are always changing throughout the entire song. They dont really do the verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus thing.
Awesome. Thanks Tyler!
That is progressive music, freedom, talent, virtuosism, musicianship, expression, perfection
“He is a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad man”
You have seen absolutely nothing yet….
Nothing is out of the box for BTBAM. Everything goes
Jazz metal?
Jazz Metal.
*snaps fingers to the groove*
There's nothing exactly typical of BTBAM.
Check out the live video for Extremophile Elite
Thanks Tyler!
This band is super quirky and creative, so this is only typical for them in that it's very quirky, mixed with Death Metal.
There is no genre for BTBAM, except heavy and fun
