- Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp.
Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.
I played Linda Ronstadt's sister in The Pirates of Penzance at the Delacorte Theater and on Broadway. (My maiden name is Robin Boudreau.) I loved every single moment of it. The only challenge performing at the Delacorte Theater in the summer was once in a while I'd inhale a bug before hitting a high note! They were drawn to the stage lights. :)
Freakin hilarious face she makes at 2:58 when Kate taps her with the fan. Ha ha. Love this version!! Yeah, Edith does look peeved when Kate starts, and the other sister is like making all these girlish faces. Ha ha. Funny.
k this is totally my favorite version of the song i've seen on youtube. all the rest that i've seen are lame. this one's hilarious and actually entertaining.
I'm a daughter in my school musical and now I'm excited to learn the song
This is my favorite version of this song. I love this orchestration and tempo. So cool to be able to actually see it. Didn’t realize there is a DVD of this production. Will need to go buy it!
just perfect just hte way G& s meant it to poke fun
Edith looks peeved when Kate starts her solo, heheh.
Robin, I've been looking all over to find out who played Edith in that production. Was that you?
i am in a musical like this and i ma popo
if you listen to the lyrics of the next song which is "oh is there no maiden breast" you will hear Fredrick say
"oh is there no maiden here?
whose homely face and bad completion
have caused all hope to disappear..."
aka they are all ugly except Mabel
@Fishstixj4l The absolute point.
Oh, I just realized my post seems a bit creepy. Some fellow AEA members and I somehow got into a discussion about who played that role. We have a couple of names, and it has turned into a debate on FB...just want to end it.
As enjoyable as this is, it really suffers from the lack of strings and the constant marimba gets annoying after awhile.
Yeow! Who came up with this orchestration?
kate is auful!

we sang this song for choir, the choreography was almost the same as this until after the first few seconds. i don't like this kate.
