    I met him once, in the mid-1990s, and he had greying hair after his recent victory, and nothing about him suggested that he was an athlete. I rather liked that he was outwardly so ordinary while at the top of his form.

      @Lindybeige, Jonathan Edwards was also a deeply devout Christian but he didn't push his beliefs down anyone's throat. he bowed out of the 1991 World Championships after he refused to compete on a Sunday, the sabbath and his "day of rest." I think that he's now lost his faith but respect to him for standing up for what he believed in and for his humility. (Lindy, what are you doing awake at 03:50?)

    Not too tall, very slim build, huge calf strength, solid knees, top sprinting speed. Watching his technique, it's very unique compared to other jumpers I've noticed. He seems to put all his faith on his landing leg to spring and bounce - whereas many others seem to force the landing leg down hard to launch off it (I guess because they physically weigh more than Edwards did). It's subtle but it's different - Edwards lost very little energy going forward when each jump occurred.

    • @patrickgomes15
      @patrickgomes15 Před 8 měsíci +2

      Yeah, I just noticed that too, watching him/these jumps for the first time. It's quite interesting how he manages to spring off a foot that he extends that way apparently to the max. Maybe if you would have stuck with it you could have beat him. We’ll never know for sure, but you’re probably not going to now with that attitude!

      This brought back a memory of watching Edwards jump the 18.29 world record in the second round. The BBC commentator at the time said something along the lines of 18.29! That's 60 feet and one quarter of an inch!

    Met him once as a kid, he grew up in Ilfracombe and visited our school.
    Our seafront has a mosaic that recreates his jump length...
    All I can say is good luck beating that distance..!

    I lived next door to Jonathan in 1994, when he was still relatively unknown and living in Newcastle. He was a completely normal, unassuming & friendly bloke and would chat for a minute or two when we bumped into each other. At the time, he wouldn't compete on Sundays, as he's a committed Christian. Who knew a few months later he'd be world record holder? Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke.

      I remember seeing him on telly a few times being interviewed and the great man is DEEPLY religious....it got me thinking if there is a big man upstairs that big hand came down and lifted him further up that sand.
